What a wonderful traditional British drama. A national treasure. I love watching it over and over again. I come from a farming background not of that era. My late grandfather and I watched it in the 1980s he could relate to it during the war and loved it, wit, humour hands on and attention to detail. Brilliant cast. 4:42

Love Hardy's quirks, subtle facial tics, and innocent charm..I don't think he had to act, as this was how I encountered him at one of his longbow demonstrations so many years ago.

This was the best scene ever in that wonderful series. Robert Hardy was a masterful actor and I have watched this scene numerous times. There will never be another like him. Ever.

He is greatly missed. Such a wonderful actor, and he seemed to be a very nice person in real life too.

While its one of Siegfried's best scenes, I wouldn't go so far as to say it was the best overall.

@@alangarrett1181 I honestly can't say there is ONE 'best' Siegfried scene in particular. There were a couple of great ones which, in MY opinion, were equal to one another. Robert Hardy was excellent as Siegfried but there were several 'antics' of his where he outdid himself if you know what I mean.

Amazing scene. I miss this so much. R.I.P. Robert Hardy. Thank you.

What is absolute perfection is that series!!! Robert Hardy at his finest. If you are watching the latest iteration of All Creature Great and Small, I suggest you stop immediately and watch this one instead. It came out in the late seventies after I had just read the series of books. It amazed me how a television production could be so faithful to the books. Not so the new series. I was so disappointed.

Upon news of his death, I, too, thought instantly of the cake scene. It should be required watching for all prospective actors ( and cameramen for that matter). Hardy is the only actor I ever saw capable of acting a soliloquy in a roomful of people. They become little more than props to showcase his talent. I am sorry he is gone.

I've seen the more recent All Creatures & it's tolerable. Replace Robert Hardy as Siegfried? It's just not possible! I love every actor in the original BBC shows (both series), but, for me, Hardy is always the catalyst for everyone else ~ the main attraction. This is a perfect example of his genius at work (-: I wish the BBC had left us a few more clips from the original on YT. What harm could that possibly do?

Has anyone noticed the sound of cows in the background? And when Mrs. Hewison raises one eyebrow? Let us applaud Cynthia Etherington, among the many players who make life worth living.

This was and still is my parents' favourite television program. The educational aspect of the show as well as the cozy rustic setting of pre-WW2 England is what appealed to them the most.

This delightful, amusing, edge-of-your-seat scene and the whole All Creatures series could not be made in the USA. Another great scene from the series was one where James was invited to have breakfast with the farm family who had called him out on a job very early in the morning. Earlier in the episode, James was upbraided by Housekeeper/cook, Mrs Hall, for leaving uneaten fatty portions of the meat she had cooked for his meal. So we knew from that that James disliked fatty meat. When James later sat down for breakfast at the farm, he was presented with large slabs of what was 95% greasy fat, relieved only by a sprinkling of minuscule islands of meat. James got through the ordeal only by commandeering the jar of homemade chutney/pickles and lathering copious amounts over every forkful of the fat he put in his mouth. The kindly farmer's wife gave James a large chunk of the same 'meat', wrapped in brown paper & string as he left. James wasted no time after leaving the farm, in throwing the gift out the car window.

Don’t understand why anyone throws shade at the 2020’s series vs the 1980’s series? Both are excellent! The recent series benefits in particular from being filmed in high definition, showing the gloriously beautiful scenery and architecture of north eastern England. Not knowing what to expect and ready to be disappointed, I found myself completely captured by new series, which slid onto my viewing foot like the most comfortable snuggle slippers! The original set such a standard of quality I was prepared to be disappointed but was delighted when the opposite occurred. Hurrah for both versions!
