Ummm wha. Literally happens every day. Every piece of land you have EVER walked on. Ever. People are bad and will continue to slaughter for the rest of time.
You are starting off from the Allied lines. About in the middle of the field is the tree (a little to the right). You then head towards the German lines. The 'deep cut' you can see in the German lines, sort of brown colour edged is 'Y' ravine, which the Germans had turned into a mini fortress. I think it was a type of quarry, in chalk. Even now there are warnings to stay on the paths due to collapsing dugouts. In 1918, during the German advance, the same battlefield was fought over again, so some of the trenches/shell holes may be from that time.
“You are my brother, but why are you quarreling with me? Why do you invade my country and try to subjugate me for the sake of pleasing those who are seeking glory and authority? “Why do you leave your wife and children and follow Death to the distant land for the sake of those who buy glory with your blood, and high honour with your mother’s tears? “Is it an honour for a man to kill his brother man? If you deem it an honour, let it be an act of worship, and erect a temple to Cain who slew his brother Abel.” -Kahlil Gibran
Looking it , is actually a beautiful field , with nature and tree's around, wonder maybe even quiet place to be , is scary to think that it was a site where 1 million souls died fighting over some miles , probably millions of names and stories that was slaughtered there .
10 lakh young men died for 10 kilometers 😓 Another 8 lakh died at Verdun . Rest in Peace the enormous number of young men who sacrificed their life for Kaiser & George .
