Brilliant versions throughout, shows the writing and musical abilities of Nick Drake. I have listened to Black Eyed Dogs 5 times on the bounce amazing I still hear Nick Drake’s version but superb different take (56mins in). Just haunting
A while ago I was given a CD of a bunch Nick's songs covered by a variety of artists called The Endless Coloured Ways and I have to say I was not particularly struck. It's quite some task to even contemplate covering Nick's songs and making sure you do them justice. THIS, however, is ABSOLUTELY MAJESTIC. A beautifully lit set, a polished, warm sound set-up, an accomplished, empathetic orchestra; a visibly CAPTIVATED audience and a whole host of artists (most of whom I now need to further investigate) who were so evidently huge fans themselves. Yes, the opening harmonists took a second or two to get in sync but I expect every artist was more than a little nervous in their desire to do justice to these timeless masterpieces, to Nick's memory and an obviously expectant, knowledgeable audience. Things quickly got into place however and from then onwards it was simply sublime. Just so obvious to see the LOVE every artist has for this subject matter. Lisa Hannigan, Vashti, and Krystle were revelations to me personally, but it seems almost wrong to single anyone out. But special kudos, I think most of us would agree, to the man weaving his mastery through every song, start to finish; the INCOMPERABLE prince of subtlety, the King of Bass, - Danny Thompson. Nick, as Danny says at the beginning of this truly wonderful concert, "would have been absolutely chuffed". Sincere thanks to everyone involved. Just astonishing.
Thank you so much for posting. I remember recording this when it was first broadcast, and I really wish I'd kept it. Quite a gathering of musicians, both famous and less well-known. Really enjoyable.
It takes very sympathetic, great musicians/singers to do justice to Nick drakes songs. And this is they x (great to see Danny Thompson providing the bassy spine of the songs, once more) x
I found some of these renditions beautiful. And some sub par but , it was still a touching tribute. My friend and I listened to Nick Drake in high school in the 70s. His songs bring back memories.
The first song was not good, but because of earlier reviews, I decided to stick with it and enjoyed it. I obviously prefer the originals by Nick Drake, but I thought it was a worthy tribute.
It's interesting that the guitar has been placed so far back in the mix - almost inaudible in some of these tracks. I would like to hear Peter Gabrielle have a crack at re-working some of Nick's work.
Bella serata e giusto ricordo, ma niente a che vedere al 90% con i timbri vocali e l'armonia spirituale di Nick Drake, che forse avrebbe detto "troppo sofisticato ed evocativo.Grazie comunque". Di cover c'è di meglio in giro. rip nick
Some are not that great. Some are good. Other's to me are pretty good actually. Especially the girls. Too bad though yes about the acoustic guitars being so down in the mix
