I just purchased this lens two or three days ago and I've been very impressed. The size is much smaller then i expect. I took it out and did some comparison with the 55 to 210 just like you did. It blows it all of the water. I go to an airshow a couple times a year and I had been renting. This lens is just perfect. I was not impressed with the 70-300. Rented it one year and didn't look back. This will work out for me just fine.

I love this lens, use it to photograph Eagles while kayaking. 525mm zoom is great for getting close to the Eagles and I get super sharp photos. I have noticed if lighting is not perfect the auto focus does struggle sometimes.

Gorgeous lens. It's very sharp, doesn't lose contrast when zoomed in, the autofocus is very fast and silent. It is consistent throughout the zoom range and across the image frame. A total gem from Sony. Love it.

Great review! I'm using it with my A6400 and it's great in sharpness and AF in good conditions but it can have focus issues when shooting on 350 mm in low light situations (mostly slight backfocus). In that cases you have to adjust manually.

I have now had this lens from Sony for testing on for few weeks and I really did not expect to even try it really. But instead I found the lens to be quite awesome actually and it made me to be more interested in telephoto. It really is useful hand held even in pretty dark and long range. Good lens unlike 18-210 which I have some years a go for few months and found it to be just annoyingly bad toy.

Note that the price of this lens is relatively more expensive in the US than the rest of the world. Apparently, because it's produced in China. Here in Denmark the 70-300mm is 8900 DKK while the 70-350mm is 6900 DKK in street prices. I think you mentioned they were priced the same (in the US).

One way to help imagine the DOF you'll be getting with a lens is by taking the focal length and divide by the aperture. So in this case 350/6.3 = 55.56. The bigger the number, the shallower DOF. Then you compare with a lens you're familiar with. For example the Sony 35mm f1.8=19.44, Sigma 56mm f1.4=40, Sony 85mm f1.8=47.22. Of course there are various other things at play but at least it's a good place to start.

Just my thoughts... but I reckon this lens would be great with the A1 or A7riv and using these in crop mode... the lens is sharp enough and it would give a long range in a lighter package without sacrificing quality - except for MP but these 2 cameras would offer plenty in APSC mode.

Bit of background... I shot with Canon gear for years and liked the 100-400mm f/4.6-5.6L IS II lens but looking back, I did not use that lens often enough because of the size and weight to justify the two grand investment in the lens. Switching to Sony, I decided not to buy the 100-400mm or 200-600mm because I didn't think I would use these that often either. However, I purchased the Sony 70-350mm lens to basically replace the Canon 100-400mm. It is 50mm shorter but 30mm wider. It is about a half stop slower at max focal length but I can live with that. I can only use it in a crop format but, I always used the 100-400mm on my crop 7D Mark II. The reason I purchased the lens is that it is significantly smaller than either the Sony 100-400mm or 200-600mm, weighs less than half of what the 100-400mm weighs and one third of what the 200-600mm weighs additionally, it costs 40% of the price of the 100-400mm and about 50% the price of the 200-400mm.... I can live with its shortcomings because of the weight and price.

I initially had the sel70300. Disadvantages are the higher weight and the thickness of the lens. Since I prefer to use it at close range, I am always enthusiastic about the beautiful Bookeh. In addition, it offers slightly better light sensitivity over the entire range and the image scale is much better, you can approach the subject closer. For example, this is advantageous when shooting insects. Now I also own the 70-350, which is much lighter and is also more comfortable to use. I do not want to make a statement about the image quality yet, which is certainly excellent when viewed alone. Sharpness is not everything, but weight and handiness are very important properties. After all, I didn't switch from full frame to APS-C so that I could carry the same lenses afterwards!

So where did you land on comparing your experience with these two lenses. I have full frame and crop bodies. I was thinking I'd stick with crop for longer range or apsc mode for the extra reach. I held both lenses...big difference in size. Do you miss the extra light and lower iso of the fe lens?
@heinreich3031
@heinreich3031 3 года назад
@@scottroberts3131 No, I do not muss anything. But I bought at the same time the SEL1655 and this is the lens I normally use. I do not like to change lenses. So I carry especially when I go by bike three cameras. 6000, 6500 and (I love 6600) 6600. Beside the two lenses I use the SEL1018 and there ist no need, changing lenses. But when I walk, the weight......

Sony 70-200 2.8 is almost 3k. I could never justify that. I haven't seen many telephoto options from Sony. Almost 1k is still a little steep but much better than 3k. Maybe itll be my 3rd Christmas present to myself.

The camera is Sony A6600, which focuses on humanistic photography. Please recommend Sony 70-300 or 70-350 or Tamron 70-180 70-300 and other lenses for future use when upgrading to full frame cameras. Thank you

This is an APS-C lens. It's telephoto side is extended 50mm (75mm in 35mm equivalent) than the full-size lens 300mm. But, the length of the pay-out will be shorter in the 350mm, it's also lighter weight.

Please compare this lens to the Tamron 18-300mm. A Tamron 18-300 vs 70-300 comparison would be awesome too. sure, we know the Sony will be better, but how much better? and does the specialization on the Tamron 70-300 bring anything to the equation that would make us give up the range of the 18-300?

Did you test the full frame lens on the APSC body? May be that's why it's not as sharp. You lose a lot of resolution using a full frame lens on a smaller sensor.
@Brettt
@Brettt 4 года назад
You shouldn't lose any resolution on APSC
@walkslow7509
@walkslow7509 4 года назад
I believe you only lose resolution if you use an APS-C lens on a full frame camera body, cause then you crop the sensor's exposure.

I echo Ramo. I own the 70-200mm f4 and it's a fantastic lens. Very sharp even at f4, and extremely versatile. I've regularly used it on aps-c cameras and it's been superb. You will not regret getting the f4!
@Kim_Miller
@Kim_Miller 4 года назад
I have the 7/200 f4 for my a6000 and wondered the same thing when I saw this vid and thought about the extra reach. Having the longer reach is attractive, but I have to really think about how I use the current lens to decide if I need to go longer. However, my son borrows the 70/200 for his a7R3 so it does double service which the 70/350 won't do. Here in Australia the price difference is minimal, $1600 for this one and $1680 for the 70/200.
@kingweddingmedia
@kingweddingmedia 4 года назад
Kim Miller I would also advise you to have a look at what aperture and iso you typically end up using at the moment and bear in mind that if you’re at f4 regularly then on this lens your iso will need to be more than double what it is for the same exposure.

With a lens like this, I was wondering how you think it would fair using it on the a6400 in a concert event, or indoors? What would you do to get the best light? What would your settings be>
@tkermi
@tkermi 4 года назад
In those cases you need all the light you can get. So I like to use shutter priority mode and let the automatics change the ISO (the aperture would pretty much stay at max.) as needed. So it's very fast and easy to just change the shutter based on what's the slowest you can use for the situation at hand.

Hey Arthur, thanks for the review! How would you decide between this one and the 70-200mm F4 for an A6400? I mostly do nature/landscape but also like a nice bokeh for detail shots. For the record: I wouldn't mind the extra cost for the 70-200, so that is not an argument for the 70-350. Still having a hard time choosing.

Got it meanwhile and its my absolute favourite lens at the moment. The stabilizer works so well on my a6400 body without IBIS. (Note that at higher focal lenghts, its almost just the OSS that does the job 👍) You can shoot a 1/80 s handheld so your ISO is reasonably low at daytime. For indoors I would definetly pick a f/2.8 zoom. But overall the range of 350mm (525 mm FF eq.) on apsc is crazy and the sharpness is also really nice. The long focal lenght even allows nice bookhes for portraits although it is a f/6.3

Do a review on the 70-200 full frame Sony lens. The one that is f4 is an amazing lens and is very sharp. Maybe also a comparison between 70-350 as well. With the full frame you are getting 105-300 on APSC. Great videos! With the full frame lens you are also future proofing in case you switch to a7 lineup.

Sony 70-200 F4 is good, even on the APS-C camera. The only problem I had with it - when I lended one - the small drop from the height of half a meter on the carpet made it break in two parts. It has some squishy plastic details inside. I had to pay around 400$ for a repair and made a decision never buy the lens - that expensive and with that poor build quality - for myself.

Any modern lens let alone a complex zoom lens will get internal damage as in decentered elements, mechanical issues, focusing problems and of course external damaged when dropped. Unlike old metal vintage lenses which are built better than anything today will brush off fine.
