Here's a brief look at a nice shortwave receiver from the '70's. This was Sony's answer to the Panasonics of the time and the Zenith Transoceanics. Great performers and powerful audio make there radios worthy of a place in collectors stable of receivers. Available in 3 models, the CRF-5080, CRF-5090 and CRF-5100, being 8, 9 and 10 band respectively. Beware of the dial scale, they have a habit of warping seriously in sunlight or heat and are next to impossible to restore. I hope you enjoy the presentation.
Cheers. ........... Phil vk2gjf

Thanks for the kind comments Clint, yes I too like the analogue sets of the 60's and 70's. There is a lot of fun to be had twiddling the knobs and they do perform well considering. Cheers. ....... Phil p.s. I enjoyed the videos of the jungle DX'ing

Hi Phil, what a wonderful radio. I love the 1970s sets with the world map, analogue tuning scale and big audio. This Sony must have been one of the best. I have a Binatone Worldstar, which might not have made it to your part of the world, but it's reminiscent of the Sony, although nowhere near as good a performer I'm sure. However, just switching the thing on and tuning around gave a real sense of adventure when I was a kid. Thanks very much for sharing! 73! Clint

I've got one of these. But I can't pick up anything on the aircraft band :( (I live near the airport and tube the same freq as my handheld but no joy) Anybody have any ideas?

Hi, I don't think they are great performers on the air band. Perhaps due to age, capacitors and some of the rf transistors have lost efficiency as well. The radio could possibly need servicing and alignment. If you're keen on listening to air frequencies, I suggest a dedicated air band receiver or the Eton Satellit Executive or XHDATA D-808, both new multiband receivers with reasonable air band performance. Cheers....... Phil p.s I'm listening to Sydney air traffic 55 kms away from the airport as we speak!
