I love that scene between Chris and Tony so much “You don’t gotta love me but you will respect me” James Gandolfini was such a powerful and impactful actor, just the way he delivered those lines give me chills.
You're one of the only reactors I've ever seen figure out what the Patsy scene at the end of ep 12 meant, great breakdown both of you. These last 3 eps of this season were phenomenal.. season 4 is my personal favorite, can't wait!
I believe season 4 is my favorite as well. I can't wait for them to watch, enjoy, and breakdown the next few seasons! They are my favorite reactions channel. Not only are they hilarious, they are both clearly highly intelligent.
the ending of season 3 is supposed to be “a beautiful moment” on purpose. David Chase basically threw in all that music at the end to manipulate us. Chase even had Junior singing at the end on purpose too saying “Junior, who is the most selfish character in the cast, is pouring his heart out- it didn’t mean a thing. Just to wallow in the moment. It was to give the audience a laugh about how they are being manipulated everyday.” So in a way, Meadow was fully justified in feeling the way she did near the end when she ran away.
I am not a big Meadow fan, but understood her reaction as well. They were basically taking over Jackie's Junior's service, not even bothering to act sad. And many people in that room even actively had a hand in killing him, which she is well aware of deep down.
@@darth856 i think Roe says something along the lines of how more people would’ve been flooding the service if Jackie was still alive and still acting boss, which is something ive always agreed with because from there on the show continues to prove how fake a lot of those people are in that type of “business.”
That whole conversation between Tony and Ralphie in episode 12 is incredible, on top of the performances every single line has a hidden or double meaning; Ralphie doesn't want the burden of dealing with it, but Tony knows Ralphie messed up with how he handled Jackie Jr. and wasn't about to let him forget it. Jackie Jr. as a whole is such an unlikeable character, he's just a screwup plain and simple. As you said he completely lacked any kind of guidance or discipline after his father died, even at the very end during his final conversation with Tony he never understood that just because his dead father was the acting boss a few years earlier, didn't mean he stood a chance or had some sort of upper hand getting into the life. He was all ego and no brains. I think my favorite moment that exemplifies his character is when he goes to Chris regarding him selling drugs at Adrianna's club. He begins all confident that he'll let him do it, even saying 'it would mean a lot to me' like he has some kind of privilege, then when Chris shuts him down he goes all quiet and storms out like a spoiled kid, and tries to do it anyway only for that to fall apart. The second things get hard for him, whether it's college or the chess game at the end he just gives up, never truly applying himself and thus never learning, but then the mafia life he thinks he has a free pass to the top, only no-one wants him to be a part of it and he screws up every attempt he makes at getting into it.
Very well said, the conversation, as always with these men, is also a feeling out. Tony is feeling out Ralphie's response and his chess moves to that response. While Ralphie is feeling out whether Tony will take the burden of making the call on Jackie's life. Jackie Jr, for all his faults was the epitome of what Tony complains about in season 1. Self entitled dummies who have no understanding of the history and honor aspect. Guys that just want to look tough in public and get free money.
The scene where Gloria tells/begs Tony to kill her was really powerful and hit me. On one hand, I really disliked her actions immensely. On the other hand, I did feel sorry for her because she was quite a tortured soul.
Annabella does a great job. Her "trembling" was so well done and realistic. When I saw Tobin Bell ( military guy) all I could see was Jigsaw from the Saw movies . I was waiting for him to ask AJ " Do you want to play a game"? 😆
You are both doing an incredible job. On the ball. I noticed that not only do you REALLY get the story.. but both of you notice small gems and plot points that are almost like Easter eggs. Even big time fans usually don't notice these things until they watch the series 2 or 3 times. But you 2 catch them right of the bat. It denotes both intelligence and proves you are deeply vested in the show this far. Great job.
Great video again guys. We're going into darker territory as the show advances. In the first episode of season one Tony said that he felt like the best is behind him, that he got in at the end. Something to think about. I don't think Meadow really ruined a "beautiful moment". She was experiencing dissonance, caught between defending her family/community and acknowledging the truth about what must have happened to Jackie. She oscillates between these positions a few times in the episode (and the show): She begins by acknowledging the truth with Carmela in her bedroom, then she goes into denial in the kitchen with Jackie's sister, then she's stuck with the truth again at the dinner where Junior was singing. Meadow's reaction to all these gangsters crying at another gangster singing a song, when they're gathered to mourn the death of a person who they doomed (and I don't mean that Jackie isn't responsible for his own death - the kid was a moron who nearly drowned in three inches of water at a penguin exhibit - but rather that he was yet another casualty of their lifestyle in general) is borne out of her being unable to take the conflict between those two realities - the saccharine hypocrisy is too much for her to bear. In the universe of the Sopranos (just like in ours), characters can't handle dissonance. Tony's dissonance gives him panic attacks. When Carmela was forced to face her own dissonance by a psychiatrist she fell into a depression. Characters in this state have to pick a direction to go in, away from the painful truth of their existences. As the show moves forward, Meadow likewise will have to choose: Between defending her family and acknowledging the truth.
What I love about this show and Mad Men is how well all the actors play their characters whether it’s Jackie Jr. or Gloria or even AJ and that smartass look he gives them
The young black guy who Jackie Jr was staying with was Michael K. Williams, who played Chalky White in Boardwalk Empire, was on The Wire and many others. He passed away very young in 2021.
Episode 12 is one of my favorite episodes in season 3. It explains the tension between Ralphie and Tony captain thing a bit more. And in every other episode Christopher looks like half a jackass but from Jackie's POV he's a serious character when he turns around at that card game. And the "it won't be cinematic" is my second favorite Patsy moment.
The female agent sent to be friends with Adriana was originally played by Faruza Balk (probably best known for her part in The Craft, which I've never seen, but I know her from alot of other things),but for whatever reaon, she wasn't in the next season, so they reshot the scenes with her for the opening flashback for the next season premier, and I see now they re-edited those scenes into the regular episode.
Brilliant scene between Tony and Ralphie. One of my favorites. It's like watching a manipulating chess match. They both don't want to kill Jackie Jr. but knows what has to be done. So Ralphie thought Tony would make the decision about how to deal with Jackie Jr. Ralphie tells Tony that he wanna give the kid a pass hoping Tony would say yes so that Tony's crew would be pissed off at Tony for letting Jackie Jr. go. But instead, Tony flipped the script on his ass by putting all the responsibility on Ralphie about what to do with Jackie Jr. on purpose. Tony knows Ralphie gave Jackie Jr. that gun so it's sort of like punishing Ralphie by letting him make the final decision. Tony also knows that if Ralphie gives Jackie Jr. a pass, the men in his crew won't respect him for letting Jackie Jr. get away with robbing and shooting made men at their card game. But if Ralphie decides to kill Jackie Jr. instead, it will cause his girlfriend pain and perhaps that would haunt Ralphie with guilt knowing that he ordered the murder of his girlfriend's son. So whatever Ralphie decides to do, either way Ralphie is screwed and he will have to deal with the consequences of his decision that will be Ralphie's burden to bear, not Tony's. This was very well written! And Tony is a vindictive SOB! 🤣
These two episodes have some of James Gandolfini and Edie Falco's finest work as Tony and Carmella in them. They go through so much in these and excel in their performances.
I think you guys were right about everything except the end where Junior was singing. I don’t think Jackie’s death had anything to do with why they were all crying. I think it’s because the Italian opera reminded them of their families and happier times when they were younger.
It was the Essex County sheriffs that made the arrests at the funeral, for promoting gambling following the Super Bowl. That wasn't the FBI, so I don't think that was Adriana's fault. The Section they cited lines up with the real NJ penal code, "promotion of gambling," and seems to be a misdemeanor (or in NJ law a "crime of the third degree") with the punishment being a fine and/or up to 364 days in jail. I don't think the FBI is looking to harass them on low stakes offenses like that.
The beautiful thing about the soprano’s is it emulates life. Not everything gets a nice little bow on it. Life is messy and some things just go unanswered. 😎
To give you context when you start Season 4 (this is not a spoiler), these are when the seasons started coming out more than a year later. Season 1: January 1999 Season 2: January 2000 Season 3: March 2001 Season 4: September 2002 It was a long wait between Seasons 3 and 4.
What Jackie Jr didn't realize is that the only reason Tony's situation worked and didn't get as fked up as it could've is cos he had his father, uncle junior and even Richie (being both jackie's brother and a respected captain) to back them up. They also didn't shoot or kill anyone lol. Ralph even mentioned it in his story, everyone eventually got their money back and it was algood. They earned respect by doing somethin as crazy as this, but played by the rules as best they could. Jackie Jr's situation was fked before it even started. Now here he's hoping to score "slap on the wrist" points like Tony by being Jackie's son. But the thing is Jackie is dead. No ones gonna give a fk about it. Richie is also dead so there's no one to back him up. Jackie Jr obviously didn't think this thru.
the scene with gloria is with Patsey Parisi. he played both twin brothers. in an earlier episode they killed his brother Philly this episode is insane.
Such great episodes to end a fantastic season (and it keeps getting better)! Keep in mind that 9/11 happened between S3 and S4 which explains the frame of mind of the characters (who live about 20 miles from Manhattan). They also remove the shot of the Twin Towers in the opening credits.
Tobin Bell, who played the military school dean in Army of One, is highly known for his role as Jigsaw/John Kramer in the Saw franchise. I'm eager for the day to see you both get into it.
Sweet. Another double dip of Sopranos!!! I already ate my tacos for dinner though. So, I guess I’ll pour myself a beverage and watch along! This is such a strong season. Love the reaction guys. Keep up the great work.
Samantha's reaction at 10:58 LMFAO! I mean, what did you think was going to happen Sam? That they were gonna let him go? !LOL!....AWESOME REACTION GUYS!
I love your insight after more nuanced and complex shows you provide. It's something that's lacking from a lot of channels, which is fine for most shows, but is so great for shows like sopranos. I can only hope that more shows follow like The Wire or my ultimate pipe dream that probably doesn't draw any views at all The West Wing.
Watched this show so many times and never realized the point of the attendance at Jackie’s funeral mirroring how much people cared about him and who his father was in life. Nice insight.
I get the feeling Ralphie planted that stick-up idea in Jackie Jr's head because he knew Jackie would run with it, and it would ultimately get him killed.
Great show, great reactions. I’ve just finished watching The Wire (you definitely should) and noticed my man Omar is in the episode! He was the chess player. Baltimore legend!!
None of these characters are supposed to be overly likeable since they're all criminals and assholes, but the reason characters like A.J. and Jackie Jr. are so overly obnoxious is because they think they're owed something from the world
I dunno why, but Ralphie's nothing line about rinsing the dishes before putting them in the dishwasher always sticks with me, I always remember it when putting dishes in my dishwasher, maybe its just that the writing on the show is so great, very few if any shows would give a character like that, that type of dialogue, like they are a normal person sometimes and that's why I've thought of it at least once every week for about 20 odd years. Also Samantha's joyfully comforting Daniel while he was afraid for the status of Furio's cock after being shot was awesome and funny. You guys are always great, so much more Sopranos to go still but's it's gonna be a great journey.
About Gloria... I dated a girl like her She's bipolar You keep seeing her because the good part of perssonality is great to be with But The bad part eventually becomes too much Everyman has ONLY SO MUCH HE CAN TAKE Tony, finally had enough
Gloria didn’t cut her own tires, it was Irina. Remember, Irina called Tony while he was on the boat with Gloria. She also has issues with men and she was dating and antagonizing Tony, because she was destructive to herself. She WANTED Tony to kill her. Tony hitting her was low. It was his own fault for not keeping it in his pants.
When "Army of One" originally aired in 2001, Fairuza Balk played the undercover FBI agent. After Lola Glaudini was brought in to play the role full time in season 4, they had her re-shoot the character's "Army of One" scenes for continuity, and the original version with Balk was never aired again starting from June 2002. Here is Balk's version of the scene with "Danielle" and Adriana: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rff7-6ejd9Q.html
*FUNFACT* - about Sopranos. This show brought down the NY mobs as they all started bragging about their crimes in real life to prove the characters were based on them, the cops already had wire-taps laid and waiting before that hoping for a slip up. Until Sopranos they were trying to catch them for decades confessing or in the act. After this show the cops claim this show was why they caught them, they needed to brag and prove the brag to others during the car drives to crimes.
It was local cops who arrested the guys at the funeral. Not feds. Something to do with illegal gambling, I think. It had nothing to do with Adriana and her new "best friend".
I was right there with you two when I first watched that last scene of the season, wondering why Meadow was acting that way. But on subsequent viewings I've come to agree with Meadow - it IS all bullshit. The song is beautiful, and the room is filled with tears as they supposedly honor their heritage with this song from the homeland. But they all take part willingly in this predatory system that killed Jackie Jr., and it renders that beauty false, hollow, meaningless. Meadow defended her and Jackie's family in front of an "outsider" but once some alcohol tore down her inhibitions her emotions came bubbling to the surface and she was unable to continuing denying the truth that she had been since she first heard the news. She knows Jackie wasn't killed by drug dealers. They all do. But they sing along and cry in what is, really, a disgusting facade of a beautiful moment. All the gangster stuff is great, but it's really stuff like this that, to me, makes The Sopranos one of, if not the, greatest television shows there is.
This show is rich enough that you can watch it repeatedly and still have conflicting thoughts about it. I am still conflicted about Meadow and AJ sometimes.
Sopranos has always been my favorite series. You both do such a great job reacting to it and I’m enjoying this so much. I’d like to suggest the “Wire”, it’s a very close 2nd to Sopranos in my opinion.
I love how you two got the Patsy scene at the very end... So many reactors are clueless about that ending... You two nailed it! Have you (both) ever taken an IQ test? I think the results would be favorable. 🙂 Keep well, HOS. Joey from NJ
The two greatest unanswered questions of the entire show, one in s3e11 one in s3e12 where is the russian who slashed her tires? maybe the tires slashed the russian?
Panic attacks can be different with everyone. But it can be often that the attack doesn't come when shit is going down and you are active. It more like a release valve that bursts open, but often just when you have time to wander off, and then it kinda sneaks up on you.
The two king cop shows to watch, The Wire & The Shield (east coast vs. west coast, too!). I would love if they watched either one, but I lean towards The Shield. It would make for better reactions because there's more crazy moments. The Wire is a masterpiece, but a bit too byzantine for a reaction channel.
