William Barker, Canadian won his VC by fighting many Fokkers D VII, some sources say as high as 60! And ended up wounded several times, even losing the mobility on his right elbow and survived because he was lucky enough to land near a field hospital. Great aviator and a great Canadian!

Mr Forsythe gave William 'Billy' Barker modest praise, an I am certain he knows it. 27 October 1918 Billy Barker engaged and shot down a Rumpler two-seater. Immediately after dispatching the Rumpler, he was jumped by a Fokker D.VII and wounded in his right leg. He turned and shot down his attacker only to find himself in a fight with the rest of his victim's squadron (about 15 Fokkers). He was wounded in the other leg, passed out, and went into a spin. He regained consciousness, recovered from the spin, and shot down another Fokker. By this time, more Fokker and Albatros fighters had joined the fight. A bullet from one of his attackers smashed Barker's left elbow. He passed out again and spun down. At low altitude, he recovered from that spin and downed another Fokker. He managed a controlled crash within British lines. Scottish infantry pulled him from the cockpit and rushed him to hospital where he lay in a coma for the next two weeks. He did not recover sufficiently to walk to receive his VC from the King until March 1919. There were varying reports of how many German fighters were in the fight with Barker. The lowest number was 15, but that is almost certainly too low. The highest number was 60, and as farfetched as it may seem, that number is likely closest to the truth.

William Barker was awarded the Victoria Cross for shooting down 4 enemy aircraft, in an against all odds air combat, while flying a Sopwith Snipe and raising his score to 52 victories. He's a canadian who always got his man.

Note: the "Sidcot Suit", which is mentioned several times in this video, was a practical one-piece flying suit named after Sidney Cotton, the well-known Australian pilot and inventor who invented and marketed it. In addition, it is worth noting that the Sopwith Snipe was the RAF's first fighter, in the sense that preceding British fighters had been developed to meet the needs of either the Royal Flying Corps or the Royal Naval Air Service. The RFC and RNAS were combined into a new independent branch of the military, the Royal Air Force, on April 1, 1918.

Billy Barker's VC fight was even more amazing than this guy gives him credit for. Barker shot down the first plane, then got jumped by a flight of 15 Fokkers. He shot down 3 more, had his left elbow blown away before being forced to land behind Canadian lines.

Fantastic segment ! Trevor and Dick are really great speakers and really into their roles as aviators. You could listen to them both all day. Indy did a fine job of letting them tell their stories. I hate when interviewers keep interrupting a person who is doing a great talk.

That's funny about the talisman. In my years in Army aviation if flew with 2 talismans. One was a Mickey Mouse keychain on my helmet bag an on my flight suit a keychain with a flexible hand that I had it giving everyone the finger. I got out in 1990 and I still have them and as a private pilot I still carry them.

It was a development of the Camel with what was basically the apex of rotary engine design (that gorgeous Bentley BR.2). It would've been no contest. (not that the Camel wasn't a fearsome aircraft, but its like comparing a Spitfire Mk.I with a Hawker Sea Fury
@Tankofdarkness
@Tankofdarkness 6 лет назад
The snipe might be bad but compared to the planes in 1914 it was far more reliable and less prone to crashing and killing the poor pilot
@galoon
@galoon 4 года назад
@CipiRipi00 The SE5 was actually quite a bit faster than the Sopwith Camel and Snipe. It had a top speed of 138 mph versus 115 for the Camel and 121 for the Snipe. The SE5 wasn't that much less maneuverable than the two Sopwith planes. It's worth noting that the top British aces like Mannock, Bishop, and McCudden all scored most of their kills in the SE5.
@galoon
@galoon 4 года назад
@CipiRipi00 That's all true! Indeed, the Sopwith Camel went on to kill more Germans--and more Englishmen--than probably any other type in the Great War, with 1,294 German planes downed. Raymond Collishaw and William Barker were among the British aces who flew the Camel. I think one of the Camel's handling issues--apart from the rotary engine--was the fact that you had the engine, guns, pilot, and fuel tank all in the first seven feet of the aircraft--about 90% of the plane's weight.

Beautiful plane! Thanks for the video and look at this plane. BTW, the Camel was also a rotary engine and had the exact same operational issues with adjustable mixture and blip switch and total loss oil system and the gyroscopic issues. You can’t turn at too low a speed to the left (I believe) as it will roll over and if sufficient altitude isn’t available it’s a crash.

@Oddball_E8
@Oddball_E8 6 лет назад
You couldn't really compare the two anyway since they have completely different goals and are set in two different time periods. Rise of Flight is a game about WWI air combat while War Thunder is a game about WWII combined arms combat with both Air, Ground and Naval combat... (Graphically, War Thunder wins, though)
@cnlbenmc
@cnlbenmc 6 лет назад
Yeah but how the combined arms part is set up is really annoying in my view, you get screwed over so hard as the Germans by Allied air power.
@Oddball_E8
@Oddball_E8 6 лет назад
Not any more. They nerfed (or rather, changed to behave realistically) the rockets, so now it's mainly bombs that are a problem. German CAS is just as dangerous as Allied nowadays.

The Canadian, Wm. Geo.Barker fought the most epic battle in air war history. He was ordered back to England because of the bad effect on the public of the loss of air aces. He ordered his plane armed and ready. He went for one last crack at the enemy. He was not disapointed. He attacked seven ? fighters. As they fought, they were joined by more and more enemy fighter planes. He shot down a few and even one after a bullet went through his elbow. Troops on the ground said he was fighting as many as 64 enemy fighters ! [ not verified ] He was able to get away with his Sopwith Snipe shot to pieces and crash-land on the Allied side of the lines. Being Canadian, no one knows of this record-setting battle ! ! ! [ just like Capt. Roy Brown who's brother pilot testified that he saw the Red Barron lurch in his seat as Brown was firing at him. ] Guess not ! For more unknown Canadian battles, check Korean war. Battle of Song Gok Trench. 500 Chinese against the Royal Canadian "Regiment" . Check the Number of Canadians ! [ you won't believe that one either ! ]

The pilot shows off his wristwatch. Prior to WW1,pocket watches were almost universally used. The very needs of combat whether air or ground,meant a wristwatch was far more expedient. Try pulling out a pocket watch when both hands are needed for gear or controls. In combat. Not easy.

This is a radial engine, rotary is a Dorito engine you’d find in older Mazdas

The Rotary engine was around long before Wankel's engine of 1958... You are mistaken. Rotary & Radial aeroplane engines are not the same thing...

Forget War Thunder! Get a sponsorship from Rise of Flight! It’s an intensely realistic Great War air combat game. We’re talking fighters, bombers, 2 seaters, and you can be in any seat! Definitely check out this game, it’s the best.
