Ok, listening to Johnny Taylor, Johnny Jones, and who I think is Willy Rogers on this version. Can't make up my mind which I like best. Johnny T does the Sam Cooke thing, and a near rap thing excellently, Johnny J does what I think is a somewhat better soulful vocal styling (my opinion), and this version is the best in terms of production, with Willy(?) giving a great vocal that I can also listen to again and again. So.......I will go on listening to all three, one after the other. : )
Frank Davis is the lead on this song. Willie Rogers is the lead singer of the other Soul Stirrers group at the time (JJ Farley and the Original Soul Stirrers). There was two independent Soul Stirrers groups for awhile.
They're all great versions My favorite version is the little Johnny Jones version because of the awesome power in his voice and some unusual scale manipulation in the song
