Nice video commentary! I see somebody already pointed out the hidden controls behind the bottom flip-out panel. I grew up with Tandbergs - love them. I also find them very logically designed and quite repairable. I recently bought a TR 2075. It had a couple of minor issues, but even an amateur like me was able to repair it. The radio section, especially the FM, section is astounding in most Tandbergs. The 2075 is rated at 2 x 75 watts at 8 ohms. But it seems to me that all Tandbergs are underrated by the factory. It is certainly more than capable of powering very large power-hungry speakers. I use a Huldra 11 daily. It's amplifier section is only rated at 2 20 watts. But is more than capable of producing nice warms sounds at normal listening levels. In general, "Tandbergistas" prefer the 1000 series to the later 2000 series for their warmth in sound character. The 2075 and 2080 are still pretty highly rated and fetch good prices when in proper order. But, any Tandberg from the 70s (and earlier) will be very satisfactory. Don't forget their excellent tape decks and reel-to-reel players as well!
Thank you for this interesting video and review! It is not often we se Tandberg featured on RU-vid. It is a hidden gem among vintage hifi.. Here in Scandinavia the brand is famous though and popular. The TR-1040 is, in my opinion as well, probably the best vintage amp I have heard, actually maybe the best amp I have ever heard. The model was Tandbergs first direct coupled design, as mentioned in the video (no caps after the power amp). It is also, if I am correct, a model that came before the TR-20xx series, which is a different design but also direct coupled. Some comments about it and using it as a vintage audiophile amp: - There is actually a Loudness control and some other controls under the potentiometers, this panel can be flipped down and under it are the hidden buttons, very cool! - The connections are placed a bit awkwardly, also the RCA inputs are very tight so modern big body RCAs will have trouble fitting, but with slimmer plugs it will work. I use gold plated 5-pin DIN plugs as interconnects, which I make myself. You can also have them made to order. Actually I think 5-pin DIN are excellent connectors! - The speaker connectors are rather clever and easy to use. You can buy smaller spade connectors, larger (modern) ones will not fit. Bare wire is also good, but no very fat cables. - This receiver can deliver very high quality sound and deserves a good source like a high quality DAC and wont be embarrassed by very good high end speakers. - Build quality is very high and they were built to last. A good tech can service it as they are logically built and not weirdly layed out inside.
