Egyptian
Region: Originally, throughout Ancient Egypt and parts of Nubia; (especially, during the times of the Nubian kingdoms); now, only, in several parts of Cairo and several villages, in Upper Egypt
Ethnicity Ancient Egyptians, Copts
Era Late fourth millennium BC - 19th century AD (with the extinction of Coptic); still used as the liturgical language of the Coptic Orthodox and Coptic Catholic churches and spoken, colloquially, by two families of Copts
Revival Revitalisation efforts have been taking place, since the 19th century; 300 reported speakers
Language family: Afro-Asiatic
is an Afro-Asiatic language that was spoken in ancient Egypt. Its attestation stretches over an extraordinarily long time, from the Old Egyptian stage (mid-4th millennium BC, Old Kingdom of Egypt). Its earliest known complete written sentence has been dated to about 2690 BC, which makes it one of the oldest recorded languages known, along with Sumerian.
Its classical form is known as Middle Egyptian, the vernacular of the Middle Kingdom of Egypt which remained the literary language of Egypt until the Roman period. The spoken language had evolved into Demotic by the time of Classical Antiquity, and finally into Coptic by the time of Christianisation. Spoken Coptic was almost extinct by the 17th century, but it remains in use as the liturgical language of the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria.

That's because Arabic is distantly related to Egyptian as an Afroasiatic language, not because Egyptian Arabic is descended from Ancient Egyptian - because it is not. You can see the same resemblances between Egyptian and Classical Arabic, Hebrew or Akkadian as well.

@TovChapaev
@TovChapaev 3 года назад
@@bakr6405 I am sure there must be Coptic loanwords in Egyptian Arabic - it would have been strange otherwise, since speakers of the two languages did coexist for more than a thousand years, until Coptic went extinct. And, in case it is unclear, I am talking about Coptic because that one is actually the daughter-language of Ancient Egyptian. The existence of loan words does not denote descent. Egyptian Arabic shares a common ancestor with Coptic - hence the similarities in common Afroasiatic vocabulary for words like numerals or basic words meaning "water" or "tongue" - but neither is descended from the other.

The ancient Egyptian language is a highly developed one. Although staring at these symbols and attempting to grasp them would hurt your eyes, there are deep and beautiful meanings concealed inside them. The eye of Horus is a symbol that represents the link between the soul and the physical body, as well as the energy connection that runs through the eye. These symbols are intertwined in ways that we may not fully comprehend over several generations. This Egyptian language has more to it than meets the eye.

because of the Arab identity. Arabization. You did after all lost your culture and traditions and language in favor of the Arabic one. Though influences, aspects and remnants of such a ancient culture does exist in Egypt. I am surprise Egypt didn't invent a Arab name for itself and still uses the Greek "Gyptos" which derives from "Kemet" in the original tongue. I think the average teacher would teach Arabic and not Egyptian. Personally I love Arab culture but that should stay in the Levant and Mesopotamia. And Arabia. Not anywhere in Africa from Somalia to Morocco too Egypt. However religion has nothing to do with the identity.

This is amazing! Finally someone who doesn't pronounce transliterations like English and can do glottal stops. I think only Arabic speakers should make videos on how to pronounce ancient Egyptian. Thank you for this! Would you consider doing a video on how different hieroglyphs are pronounced?
@GaryHField
@GaryHField 3 года назад
I want to see this language revived and promulgated within my lifetime. Nothing’s really impossible, but it would be a lot of hardwork. It’s like India implementing Sanskrit as the national language, or Italy reviving Latin. Israel already did revived Hebrew. Just imagine if Egyptians could use simplified hieroglyphics in schools and signages. Even holy books like the Bible and Quran written in hieroglyphics. That would be extremely fantastic.
@bhka6423
@bhka6423 3 года назад
it's difficult because nobody knows how it really sounded like. but egyptian probably sounded like amazigh or arabic. something what is clear is that the egyptians used that "Q" which is also used in arabic.
@GaryHField
@GaryHField 3 года назад
@@bhka6423 I believe it is closer to Amazigh, since both are North African languages. Yes, I believe the sounds will change a bit when it comes to a modern day speaker. But that does mean that the modern day Hebrew that they’re using in Israel is very different from the Ancient Hebrew language? The one used during the times of Jesus?

As a Coptic Christian, I know a lot about Coptic. It is the language of the church. I learned a lot from it to perform prayers in the church. We are interested in this language because it is our language. Muslims in Egypt their ancestors are Arabs are not Egyptians and never will be. I am proud to be a Coptic Christian of Egyptian origin.

That's because Ancient Egyptian language and Arabic are related being members of a family of languages known as Afro-Asiatic which has several subdivisions. Arabic belongs to the Semitic subdivision in which Hebrew and Aramaic languages belong to while Ancient Egyptian language belong to the Egyptian subdivision. Coptic is the only language that is descended from Ancient Egyptian language and its usage is limited as the liturgical language of the Coptic Church. Currently there are attempt to revive it as a vernacular which has been ceased since the 17th Century CE. Coptic lacks modern and contemporary words, terms and expresses and new ones are most likely be adopted from Arabic since all Egyptians, Christians and Muslims speak Arabic.

I think reviving Egyptian as a lingua franca would be a very good idea along with Arabic. The only thing that would concern me is that idea creating a division with the people of Egypt.
@MrLantean
@MrLantean 3 года назад
Coptic language had ceased being a vernacular for 400 years and its usage since had been restricted as liturgical language of the Coptic Church. The language lacks modern and contemporary terms. Linguists can create new ones from archaic words as well as giving them new meaning. The most practically approach will be getting loanwords from other languages especially from Arabic. Coptic is related to Arabic as being members of a family of languages known as Afroasiatic which has several branches. Arabic belongs to the Semitic branch while Coptic belongs to the Egyptian branch. There are many Semitic languages like Hebrew, Aramaic and Amharic while Coptic is the only member of Egyptian branch. Any new words, terms and phrases will be primarily adapted from Arabic.

Many believe that the Copts should, revive the Coptic language, I am not against that, but I personally think that if they want to return to their true roots, they should also (if not more) try to revive Egyptian, especially as they consider themselves descendants of the ancient Egyptians ... I do not count the fact that Egyptian is much more interesting and sounds so exotic and ancient that it really is great to hear this language.
