Manchu (ᠮᠠᠨᠵᡠ ᡤᡳᠰᡠᠨ) manju gisun
Native to: China
Region: Manchuria
Ethnicity: 10.7 million Manchus
Native speakers: 20 (2007)
Thousands of second language speakers
Language family: Tungusic
is a critically endangered Tungusic language spoken in Manchuria. As the traditional native language of the Manchus, it was one of the official languages of the Qing dynasty (1636-1911) of China and in Inner Asia, though today the vast majority of Manchus now speak only Mandarin Chinese. According to data from UNESCO, there are 19 native speakers[citation needed] of Manchu out of a total of nearly 10 million ethnic Manchus. Now, several thousand can speak Manchu as a second language through governmental primary education or free classes for adults in classrooms or online.
The Manchu language enjoys high historical value for historians of China, especially for the Qing dynasty. Manchu language texts supply information that is unavailable in Chinese and when both Manchu and Chinese versions of a given text exist they provide controls for understanding the Chinese.
Like most Siberian languages, Manchu is an agglutinative language that demonstrates limited vowel harmony. It has been demonstrated that it is derived mainly from the Jurchen language though there are many loan words from Mongolian and Chinese. Its script is vertically written and taken from the Mongolian script (which in turn derives from Aramaic via Uyghur and Sogdian). Although Manchu does not have the kind of grammatical gender found in European languages, some gendered words in Manchu are distinguished by different stem vowels (vowel inflection), as in ama, "father" VS eme, "mother".

Just so you guys know, Manchu is still spoken because it has a sister language called Xibe. Xibe is essentially the same language as Manchu with minor differences (think German vs. Dutch). However for some reason the Xibe tribe were expelled from the Qing Manchu Banners long ago and thus were not considered Manchu by the Qing. However their language is merely an offshoot of Manchu and while it obviously has diverged, they are both mutually intelligible and Xibe has over 100,000 speakers.

@@ccpmustfall6445 No, not really since Old Dutch and Old High German were both spoken more than a thousand years ago and could easily be distinguished from one another since the High Middle Ages. I don’t know if you speak either language but it’s easy to see that both have undergone significant phonological and grammatical changes over the centuries so I honestly don’t see how Dutch could be a dialect of German. Also, why would you assume that Dutch is a dialect of German and not vice-versa ?

Almost all Manchus don’t have pure Manchu ancestry. Manchus stopped learning Manchu as early as in the late Qing dynasties. In order to save this language China set a Manchu special region where all signs and schools are forced to be bilingual. There are more Manchu learners nowadays but native speakers are dying away.

Just think about it. If you're Manchu and you marry outside the Manchu population, you'll mostly speak Mandarin at home since your spouse won't understand Manchu very well. And since schooling is done in Mandarin, your children, who may be legally Manchu, will not be exposed to the language at school. Even if you try to teach them a little, they will still be more comfortable with Mandarin and use it more naturally. When it's their turn to get married (very likely to a non-Manchu and almost certainly to someone who speaks Mandarin better than Manchu) and have kids, their kids can also be legally Manchu but will not speak the language.

Sibe or Xibe is also a Tungusic people like the Manchus and some scholars identified Sibe language as a dialect of Manchu language due to both languages' mutually intelligible. Most likely that the Sibe people share a common ancestry with the Manchu and their languages may also share a common origin. A failed rebellion had resulted 18,000 Qigihar Sibes being relocated to the Ili River in Xinjiang to maintain a local garrison. The Sibe language still has thousands of speakers especially in Xinjiang while the Manchu language has only a handful of speakers due to the Sinification of the Manchus. Even the Sibe remained in their ancestral homeland of Manchuria or better known as Dongbei also went through Sinification and only a handful can speak their native language.

Manchu language with Mandarin accent
@asianview5589
@asianview5589 3 года назад
It's like Mongolic/Tungusic closest relative to Korean it seems in language, the Chinese accent is simply because it's spoken by people in China as a 2nd language nowadays. The language itself seems more Mongolic/Koreanic related. As a Mongolian learning Korean and Turkish, I'm tired of Westerners knowing nothing about our cultures that keep 'disputing' the Altaic theory because of 1 wikipedia article, I'm going to send a mail to Wikipedia about that because it's really misinforming people. Most scientist absolutely never said the languages aren't related as a fact but it's hard for them to specify if they are. While Mongolian, Turkish, Korean, Japanese local scientist generally could faster see the connection and it's no surprise, it's because these people actually understand the languages. Another issue historically has been that the biggest contributor to the theory have been Turkey and Japan, while I still believe Japanese is part of the group to some degree, it is definitely the least similar to the languages. But Turkic seems like a dialect of Mongolian for me, and this Manchu-Tungusic language really connects Korea back to us. When it comes to the Altaic theory, Mongolic-Turkic-Tungusic theory isn't seen as that debatable actually, so if we can add Korean at least to that it would make sense. A lot of Westerners seem to not want to see these bigger North-Asian nations together bcs of their superiority complex of their Indo-European languages... Let's not fall for that, Proto Trans-Eurasian is a new name for the theory and it takes a slight different approach as well. It is only time before we will be group together in the end, just because our similarities are slightly different than European languages doesn't mean it's not valid, different kinds of cultures and people existed in the world... With love to everyone :)

The fact that the Manchu ruled as the Qing Dynasty is actually bad for the preservation of the language. The Manchu soldiers and their families moved from Manchuria to Han provinces in order to rule the Han, but they usually live around their barracks with a lot lot more Han Chinese living around them, so gradually they give up their language and speak sinitic languages, this happened since mid-late Qing Dynasty until now, made it almost no native speakers. But there're always people learning it as a second language, because of it's historical value.

I learned in 5th grade that the original Han/ Chinese language from the Tang Dynasty was Cantonese. My teacher explained the evidence that the famous 300 Tang Poems only rhyme when recited in Cantonese, not Mandarin.

But cantonese doesn't rhyme when reading those writings that predate Tang dynasty like those written by Confucius. Totally doesn't rhyme.

This sounds literally just like standard Chinese spoken in gibberish 😮「Mandarin = “滿大人”語」這個說法我越來越相信了,當代官方(滿清帝國垮台後的PRC🇨🇳和ROC🇹🇼政權)只是不想承認、試圖掩蓋真相,因為覺得沒有面子。北京周圍跟中國東北地區 畢竟很大比例的本地人根本就是祖先近代(~500-200年前)才被”漢化”的滿族

but it is only sound similarity . meaning is not the same. there are much more sound similar but different meaning words from other languages even some are funny . Manchu language is similar to Mongolian. Manchu is not similar to Turkish. Altaic language family is not accepted anymore because there is not even 8 same words in each Altaic languages. 1st possibility.; Maybe Mongolian and Manchu can be in a same language family together. it seems Mongolian took loanwords from Turkish. but orginally Manchu and Mongolian were closer languages. Mongolian got different than Manchu with Turkish loanwords. 2nd possibility; Maybe Turkish and Mongolian were close languages but Mongolian took loan words from Manchu so Manchu and Mongolian got similar result; but similarity between Manchu and Mongolian languages is much more than Turkish and Mongolian similarity so 1st possibility is much more true.

The reason is simple: Both Arabic and Manchu writing systems are from the Aramaic family group, which can be traced back to Egyptian hieroglyphs
