Two days ago someone recommended this band to me. It only took a few minutes to fall in love with them, that hasn't happened for so, so long. Astounded I had never, ever heard a peep about them. And then to find actual video of them. This is just brilliant, thank you!
Same thing here. I never heard of them three days ago. And I'm now waiting for the two box sets of their albums to be delivered. Can't wait. Just can't understand how they slipped under my radar for all this length of time.
Ian Ellis Bought both the box sets, the first one last year and pre-ordered the second one as soon as I heard about it. You are in for a treat, I can't stress how good the first three albums are, especially "From The Lion's Den". Normally I'll hear about bands but not hear them, this band were completely off my (and many others it would seem) radar, which is odd as it's right up my street, post-punk is probably my favourite genre (if I really had to pigeonhole).
Arrived today! If I had selected first class they wouldn't have arrived any quicker. 9 CD's for £30 delivered. Plus two booklets. What a bargain! Really great sound quality. Just played Jeopardy and From The Lions Den. Both really excellent albums. Loads of extras. I am well happy with this already and there is still another whopping 7 CD's to go! .
Ian Ellis Good stuff, great that you're enjoying them! All those albums, bonus tracks, BBC sessions, the booklets and the packaging for a great price, not bad eh? "All Fall Down" may not grab you at first, especially after "From The Lion's Den", but it really grew on me after a few listens. Hope you enjoy the rest just as much...
@@zyrkugilgameshYeah, it sounds like he’s talking about taking control of his life. Also, lyrics aren’t always meant to be viewed as biographical-he could be writing from the perspective of a narrator or character
@5eurocups2005 I don't think the smiths are depressing, Joy Division are but I love them for that. You know Ian and Adrian meant it though, with Morrissey I suspect ther's a bit of posturing going on.
i think The Sound are Clearly better than bands like Joy division and The Smiths even though it think they are fantastic bands, The Sound are completely flawless whereas Joy division and The Smiths music was overall a little depressing
I knew Adrian, we lived in the same part of London. He was always immensely committed to his music, and he was a really genuine chap. I never liked what he did at the time, but seeing what he did with the Outsiders and the Sound so long afterwards, I can see he did have talent as a writer, and also as a guitarist. I remember well his Gibson SG, he played it well. I regret that I never told him I respected a lot what he was trying to do. I won't forget Adrian.
@@RenatoNardelli I can assure what I wrote is true, you will just have to take my word on that. We used to see Adrian regularly on a Saturday night at our local pub hangout, and we often had a chat with him.
glad to have seen this band twice back in 1983 (NYC and Philly) and meet Adrian and band- he was truly a legend - From the Lions Mouth might be one of the greatest records of the 80s. Played it non stop on my radio show - RIP Adrian, Max.
It's the raw powerful performance that counts!!! Maybe you would prefer a in tune wet lettuce but i for one get chills up my spine at the shear power and magnetism of Adrian Borland and the Sound even if it's not in tune. Can you feel the power?????
I remember I discovered this band when I still in high school 16 or 17 years ago when I was getting into Post Punk and Power Pop music around the same time..such a great band!
@hildaatje I met him in Sittard in the early 90s. We played quite a few small gigs together around Limburg. Later, after I moved back to London I saw him quite often for a while, then never heard from him again after 1996. I'm still close to a lot of people who knew him too.
I cannot understand why John Peel never freaked out at the GENIUS of Mr Boland??? I play guitar and I can't work out what he is doing!!! Amazing guitar and totally his own style. Can you see how his thumb drops of the neck to do open strings! Intelligence, emotion,POWER.....THE SOUND
The Sound was highly underrated. I have a dark post-punk band that's done a cover of "Winning" you can check out here on RU-vid. Not enough of us these days.
Joy Division is one of the most influential bands ever, specially now that everybody has discovered them because of the movies and internet. But now a lot of music fands find every band (JD's contemporaries) being sub-JDs. They lived at the same time, influenced by the same musicians, obviously there are resemblances, and there are actually JD copies... but The Sound has their own "sound", Borland's voice and polished atmospheres are unique, and Jeopardy is essential just as Unkown Pleasures is.
these guys and the Comsat Angels should have been much better known. I am British,I understand Comsats and The Sound were popular in Netherlands and Belgium.
They had asked them to change the lyrics... Borland refused... And soon.... They did not support them! That s all! A mythic band for me.....! A tragedy.....!
i believe adrians first release was with the outsiders in 77,they simply changed the name a few years later to the sound.this song is from their second album in 81 the same years u2s second album october came out.but i dont think u2 held a candle to the sound.
How this band aren't spoken about in the same sentences as Joy Division amazes me. Truly great.... Shame you had to leave us Adrian. But, thanks for the great tunes....
His songs are so full of passion, I think he cared too much - about the planet, politics, the Human condition and it eventually consumed him, so sad for he was so wonderfully gifted. His work is truly a Treasure for many but still buried for most - thats ok., because it makes all those "The Sound" fans, really Cool. Be Good.
Remove what comments? They're all still here. Know-it-all? You have to be kidding me. Maybe try to compose a few songs or at least learn to sing or play an instrument? (If you haven't done so already.) This is my last comment. Please have a good life.
I don,t see how this can be called atonal....clearly the bassline is too high.I may have overstated the impact a bit,but this is simply out of tune!Besides;it,s not that uncommon for The Sound to play a bit ...ehmmm..."atonal"during live performances,as all die hard fans know! And true;the raw power isn,t compromised.
What a nostalgic sound... I'm a little young to remember their group and I can't say I'm their biggest fan listening to this, but something in their music is just so familiar it's almost like coming home. :D
I don't think they're out tune. Things song's chord progression is not ordinary. So it's really atonal at times. Also you should consider the instruments used. The organ is a traditional one; Borland also used a different distortion here. Kinda stripped down but still intense.
You completely misunderstood what I meant by atonal. It has something to do with the (original) arrangement and how the notes "blend." I still stick with my explanation about not using their original instruments in this live version.
@hildaatje Adrian was a good friend of mine. He didn't like this because he thought the grey suit made him look like "Littlewoods gone wrong". I'm pretty sure those were his exact words.
Harmonic juxtaposition?Say what? I had just gotten to terms with the atonal fact! Not to go on or anything;but there is not a single bandmember that doesn,t make mistakes.Nothing ado with genius,as anyone who knows the studio versions by heart should know.......and with you on Hüsker du;another brilliant band!Gonna see what I can find right now, thanks!
@mrsBLacKgr God, does it matter what they look like? They made great music. A critic once said they weren't big because Adrian wasn't thin with flowers sticking out of his arse'
Fantastic. First time i've seen this clip since it was on TV originally. I thought it was superb at the time, - I actually thought this is a great advert for the music of 1981 - but it sounds 10 times better than I ever remembered it, and also 10 times better than the record. Adrian should have been a superstar.
@jgg017 Saw them last night, they were great. Met the Bassist too. Steven has been ill apparently but he still did a great peformance. I also found out why the Sound didn't like Bunnymen, McCulloch called Borland 'the singing pig'. Mac the Mouth strikes again.
So, true. Does anyone have a version of "Temperature Drops" to post? My Hearts and Sounds cassette, yes really cassette, is history and a CD version is virtually non-existant. I love my LP collection, but my vehicle is CD/MP3 only!
Being from the "other side of the pond," The Sound and Adrian Borland, were not well-known here. My friend had me listen to them, back in the 80's--I WAS HOOKED. I still have a couple of their LP's that I played to no end and now I have some of their CD's. Adrian's voice is haunting and emotional--such a great loss: "We will never pull you down, no we shouldn't put you down, your a monument, to love."
I new this song, yesterday Sense Of Purpose was covered by Red Zebra, a Belgian group at BimFest2009. Incredible song, you can say its in line of Joy Division.
