I Spoleto Italy I often stayed at my aunt's apt. When the radio station I listened to was "between chanels", they played a nonstop recording of the goldfinch. I've never forgotten it. It was incredibly touching. But I've never heard THAT song again. If ANYONE knows what I'm writing about.. please lmk.
Wonderful video -- so beautifully captured. The goldfinch certainly enjoying the seeds. I wonder what kind of seeds the goldfinch was enjoying. Love the goldfinches songs and calls too. Thank you for sharing, Maurice.
Thanks so much for your generous comments. The goldfinch was eating teasel seed and when all the natural seeds have been eaten I sprinkle Niger seed, which are very similar, on the old teasel heads and they then still come and feed on them.
Am currently on Goldfinch patrol, protecting a nest from further predation by another damn magpie - he/she grabbed one yesterday sadly! I now wake at 3:30am to ensure we don't get caught out by the sneaky bugger, take up my post and wait for my wife to take over later in the morning. Everyone we know, including family, thinks we've lost the plot.
That's so helpful that you have separated and described the different calls. I've been trying to identify this bird's flight call for ages as it was difficult to see overhead. Now I know it's a beautiful Goldfinch!
Another great video, Maurice! The goldfinches' song and calls, especially their flight calls, are some of my favourite to listen to. So bright and uplifting. Their 'long burst song' actually reminds me of the chaffinch's song a bit - I think there are some similarities. Watching a fairly large flock of them wheel around in flight is a delightful sight - those flashes of yellow and white in their wings every time they turn...
I have a goldfinch who built her nest right next to my dining room window in a hedge just on the other side --- the babies started hatching today! I'm so excited! My husband and I are now so vested. Last week we purchased a feeder, nijer seeds, cleaning kit for the feeder, and , last night ---- my husband dreamed we bore firearms and stood guard outside as there was a human with a lion head/face peering over our fence and threatening to prey on nesting Goldfinch.
That is amazing thank you so much so many different notes .how did you manage to get all that recorded ? And how did you get the gold finch to stay so long ha ha it was the sound summer !
Thank you Robert for your kind comments, teasel seeds are one of their favorite foods but they are only very small so it takes them a long time to get a fill. The audio was from a number of recordings that I made over the last twelve months.
Utterly delighted to have found your videos. I was trying to identify a thin, reedy tseep alarm call from the garden that I couldn't quite be sure belonged to one of the number of frequent visitors. Some time later, I realised I'd been watching your beautiful, informative videos, reflecting on childhood days spent holding an old Collins bird book doing the same thing with the same curious wonder. Thank you for sharing your knowledge in this way, these are a joy to watch while learning. Very happy new sub to your wonderful channel ☺️
cheers Maurice class stuff was out the front there and heard one purposely leave the dandelions on grass they love the fly away seeds. great thistle shots great birds
Never ceases to amaze me the wealth of information you convey with your videos. Thank you so much. For years we had goldfinches all around us but the only visitors to our feeders were blue tits( for the best part of 23 years). Then all of a sudden since last year we’re only getting gold and greenfinches and the blue tits have disappeared. Interesting how things change.
Thanks, it seems to be an important step towards a semantic sound mapping of the Goldfinch language. The quality of some recordings is not optimal. It could help, if several recordings or even better video-recordings could be collected by different observers to reinforce the link between sound or sound patterns and behavior.
Hi there, I was wondering how you got this wonderful spectrogram ? I know the software PRAAT, but I am not really familiar to it. I have to memorize a bunch of bird songs, but it is very hard for me to do so just by listening songs. That is why I would like to be able to generate spetrograms, in order to have visual support to help me. Thanks a mil for your answer.
Hi Hannah, I use NCH-WavePad for all my audio editing, it gives you a Wave Form in the main window and an option of a Frequency Spectrogram in a second window. You can import and export a variety of formats and it has a good set of tools for editing and cleaning up the audio. As you said the spectrograms a very good at helping you to both see and hear bird song. Hope this is helpful, best wishes Maurice.
