Saint Paul is the capital of Minnesota. It is a river city with it's downtown located on the Mississippi river. It is the northernmost port on the Mississippi river for shipping via barge. At night you can hear the soft rumbling of trains slowly pulling into or departing from the Union depot train station. You will also hear the sound of barges working along the Mississippi river and the horn of the Union Pacific vertical lift bridge (1 of only 3 on the entire river) signaling its rise or fall for river traffic. It's never noisy because the trains and barges are moving very slowly by the time it make it to downtown. I find the sounds soothing at night when my windows are open.
