I grew up during this renaissance in music. It was so exciting. The Beatles! The Temptations! The Supremes! The Stones! Marvin Gaye, and on, and on. What a great time to have grown up.
I'm really enjoying this. The less than stellar quality just adds to the nostalgic feel. Kinda like the scratch and pop on those old 45s. Thanks for sharing.
The definition of Soul Music as it pertains to this documentary has to be defined as - rhythms out of the spirit of an oppressed people (Black People) who glued together perseverance and determination with a sound that spoke from the emotions and consciousness of life. Happy, sad, angry, mad, disappointed, excited, depressed, joy, love, hate&satisfaction etc.....
Soul music was a global phenomenon the world loved it. I come from Scotland and have seen so many of these artists live in the 60's and 70's. They were all great but the ones that stood out for me were Otis Redding, Diane Ross and Martha Reeves. Soul music was black music that grabbed the soul of everyone.
You can define soul music the same way you define, “Soul food.” It’s a creative expression that is associated with a particular culture or race; a deep excretion of emotions and feelings that yearn to break free; it’s the storyboard of the soul.
2019 When it comes to putting a lot of soul in a song, no one does it better than African-Americans. They pioneered that kind of soulful style. Please feel free to comment. Thank you. Peace.
I know I was pretty surprised last year about little Richard and if it weren’t for the pandemic I think they might have did a big show like they did for Aretha Franklin.
Gospel music by Black people is the ORIGINAL Blues and Rock And Roll, and Soul Music Black gospel is where it all atarted.if had not been for Black artist ,there would not have been an Elvis Presley , who would have inspired and influenced him Beethoven??!!! Your most popular british rock bands were influenced by Black artists. If there had never been ,Bo diddley, Little Richard,Big Mama Thornton, howling Wolf, Muddy Waters ,Jackie Wilson , Elmore James, and Many others, had not been for these artists, there world be no rock and roll or Elvis, the TRUE KINGS ARE THE ORIGINATORS AND THOS WHO INSPIRED. THESE ARE THE FACTS. SOUL MUSIC,LIKE THE ORIGINAL HUMAN BEING IS " BLACK".
I still remember seeing the Movie Heaven Help US (Realeased As Catholic Boys In The UK), and they played "I've Been Loving You Too Long" with Andrew McCarthy, Mary Stuart Masterton and Kevin Dillon in their Pre-John Hughes, Rat Pack and Entourage Days. It amazed me to know that His Music still stood the test of time.
I'm not even surprised why Michael idolized James Brown so much. God I wish I could go back in time. My love for Mike brought me here and I'm not complainin' I love it 😍😍😍
BLACK PEOPLE SING THE MUSIC, PLAY THE INSTRUMENTS, WRITE THE SONGS, BUT EUROPEANS OWN THE LABELS, DISTRIBUTION, AND PUBLISHING. SO IN THE END, EUROPEANS ARE THE ONES BENEFITING FROM THE CULTURE, NOT THE BLACK PEOPLE THAT ACTUALLY MADE IT. IT'S A SHAME, AND HIP HOP MUSIC IS IN THE SAME TERRIBLE SITUATION.
D-VO It is not the Europeans who own the labels, distribution, etc. When a black group sang a song on record and even white people loved the song they would sell it with white people on the cover. The Brunswick Label, Nat Tarnapol, was Jackie' Wilson's manager. They ripped him off to the tune of millions. They covered everything on the label as if they produced, directed that song. Their 6wk old baby was supposed to have written the song. Just so they could collect more money for themselves. A lot of up and coming artists were treated the same. There is a telling story - Brunswick Label With Barbara Walters. A must see if you are interested. Remember back then they had the civil rights issue, segregation was ever present. Those were trying times for black artists. Who owns all forms of the media? Got that right. Nowadays black performers are more aware of what is going on and can command millions for their songs. I know with Jackie Wilson they ruined his life. Died a pauper, penniless. Black people have always achieved to be the best whether music, sports, movies, etc.
I'm remembering some of 90 percent that has gone on, Wilson Pickett, Solomon Burke, Arthur Conley, Lloyd Price, Fats Domino, Big Joe Turner, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong just to name a few, their music will always remain in the minds and 💓 of many as those others who left us a legacy of music and performances we will never forget.
Comparing Jackie Wilson and Aretha Franklin to folks like Hall and Oates and Dusty Springfield is like comparing a home cooked four course Sunday dinner to a frozen burrito.
Ryder Ferenc your comment makes you sound ignorant who doesn't know music. I bet you know HAll& Oates only from their campy 80s hits, great you heard 1% of all their music and Dusty Springfield is a legend by her own right. You're just an asshole.
I'm in my early 30s and grew up around a family of musicians playing and listening to soul music... sax players. Later on I found reggae artists such as Toots and the Maytals, Paragons, early Errol Dunkley, Derrick Morgan, and so on and became fascinated with older reggae' s soulful vocals, as well as original ska originating from black musicians. Hearing Pickett's, James Brown, and other's amazing screams still gives me goosebumps. Soul artists have influenced and inspired some many bands and genres, if only people knew their music history. So many of my friends, especially black friends, would and still do get crap for listening to other genres that somehow has been mislabeled as "white people music" and treated as outcasts even within their families. It's a shame knowing that black musicians were responsible for many of these genres yet people still label music this way. I'll admit I'm biased, there's not many white vocalists that I enjoy singing soul and especially reggae.. But point is soul is a genre that will always be around and influencing musicians, just wish more kids would take the time to experience this. Also question...im not into "neo-soul", more obsessed with the classics and northern soul, any suggestions for current artist touring America (especially east coast)?? I loved Curtis Mayfield r.i.p. and love to catch Lee Fields, but who's currently sticking with the original sound... preferably with sax and or organ that's not too heavy on religious themes??
I totally agree with you! I would not want to say I'm biased towards black music. but seriously, black music really has the soul, it really grabs ur heart, touches ur soul. i have always been listening to contemporary r&b, soul and hiphop music, but never really pay attention to those black artists, especially those iconic/classic soul artists. and recently i just went back and study the roots of soul and other black music, i'm totally surprised by the fact that black music had really influenced a lot to many existing genres nowadays. I'm so blessed that they created such wonderful music influence to the whole world. but serious speaking, i have the same point of thinking as yours, i honestly thought, white people cannot do soul/r&b/hiphop as good as the blacks, they just don't fit in those music, those grooves, they just don't sound as soulful as those blacks. i mean black people can literally sing anything and naturally they will have the flow of soul.
*I DON'T AGREE WITH SMOKEY . SOUL MUSIC IS OURS. DANG. I'M TIRED OF WHITE PEOPLE GETTING CREDIT FOR EVERYTHING WE DID AND I ABSOLUTELY AGREE WITH THE BRILLIANT COMMENT BELOW ABOUT WE CREATED, THEY'VE BANKED.*
At the same time, and by Berry Gordy's own admission, the purpose of Motown was to package and sell black music to white people. So make of that what you will. At some point though, once it's out in the world, music belongs to everybody. That's what I love about it anyway.
@@sbakernyc5761 When I listen to Van Morrison I feel I'm listening to soul music just as powerful as any other. It's colour-blind, as all great music is.
Yall know David Ruffin also recorded I want you back 1st but it was not released..I love Michael but David blew it OUT THE PARK without ANY Real change to it.
Diana Ross wuz the Kim Kardashian of the Supremes. The Marvellettes and Martha and The Vandellas were just as gud as the Supremes but Diana Ross wuz screwing berry gordy and that's wat made the Supremes soar like they did.
I feel like soul music came from the slaves in the field singing to get through the work. This music and entertainment developed and developed. Mr. Brown set back in those woods and while not going to school made his own and look what happened the world knows.
Whatever whenever AA are proud of there culture, it's racism. No, I e says that when Jewish, Mexican, etc. acknowledge or are proud of their.culture.All genres of music are expressions of a culture or heritage, why is that so hard to understand ?
I believe, soul music is ANY music genre that moves you and inspires you and fulfills you. Relegating it to one musical genre just confuses folks...which is why you see perplexed facial expressions when you ask someone "what is soul music?". In other words, a guy born in West VA who only listens to George Jones can call that soul music, instead of country music, if he so chooses. Why?..because listening to George, makes him feel exactly how I feel when Im listening to Bobby Womack...whatever moves YOUR soul, is "soul music". Soul Music, is the furthest thing from being just BLACK MUSIC. Its an insult to music, in general, to paint it with colors. But we do it to SELL RECORDS, in very manipulative and insidious ways. Like Patti LaBelle said, "she doesnt care if the person is black, white or purple"...if it gives her "goosebumps", THAT IS soul music TO HER.
