The soundtrack of Ocarina of Time, but it's a prog rock concept album

What would Ocarina of Time sound like if it was written in the style of a prog rock concept album? "Tempo of Time" is a medley by myself and @Marc_Papeghin that seeks to answer that question.

So a little background on how this project came to be:
Marc and I have had a history of collaborations dating back to ~2013. After several of these, it became clear that we had what I thought was some pretty cool musical chemistry, so I pitched the idea of a collaboration; since we were both fond of these big, prog-epic style medleys I thought it would be cool to write and co-produce one together. The idea, in essence, was to take the music of one video game and turn it into one big, flowing piece of music. Funny enough, the "prog" part of this project wasn't explicitly the genre that we were going for when writing it, but due to our common prog influences, that's the form it naturally took (and I'm sure the prog fans out there will be able to pick out more than a couple references hidden in there) ;)
So why Ocarina of Time? Besides its popularity, OoT in hindsight was the perfect candidate for such a medley: for one it tells a great story, complete with a time-traveling hero fighting his way through a world full of mysterious creatures in order to rescue a princess from the grasp of evil. Most importantly though, the soundtrack and its connection to the story set a gold standard for video games, with timeless classics to be heard throughout the game. Even better, it's clear that Koji Kondo himself was inspired by prog rock as evidenced by the musical style of some of the compositions.
Lastly, it's pretty well known that the soundtrack of OoT has been covered to death in the VGM community, so it presented us with an challenge/opportunity to really get creative with the arrangements and try to do something that's never been done with the soundtrack before. Some may prefer more the traditional arrangements, but I hope that many will also appreciate the unique spin we tried to throw on this classic.
This medley wouldn't have been possible without the help of the following talented guest musicians, so be sure to check them out!

If you enjoyed the video, give a listen to Marc's album _Children of Yevon_ - same concept but applied to Final Fantasy X: ru-vid.com/group/PLIubPTwbzCSbZDkb1XxGrj7ivMIdXbHyj It's easily one of the best tributes to a video game soundtrack out there and yet the algo hasn't picked up on that, so it remains criminally under-viewed. Let's show it some love!

@drpez12
@drpez12 2 года назад
We would love to put it on streaming services (and I'm sure Marc would love to do the same for Children of Yevon), however the pricing structure for licensing a medley of cover tunes makes it impractical (the more songs, the higher the fees, so something like this would actually end up costing us per stream). For those who would prefer to listen to it off of RU-vid, there's a link in the description to download it as an mp3 (or lossless FLAC if you're into that) :)

I went into this expecting a cutesy walk down memory lane that mirrored countless other VG medleys I've heard before: the same songs, except with different instrumentation, combined in a way that flows, or with simple transitions. Nothing wrong with that style, just not as much of a challenge as creating original music that still appeases that part of our brain that prefers the familiar. Instead what I got is an unique suite that flows and sounds like a concept album from the type of bands I've been listening to since I started discovering my own tastes. This was the perfect blend of familiar passages with (seemingly) original sections, all done with the instrumentation of a large band, and strung together in a way that not only flowed perfectly, but created an entirely new musical narrative. Someone once said that the greatest adaptation is the one that makes you experience the work for the first time again, and this album does that.

I can’t get over how much I love this album/song/medley. I’ve commented on this video numerous times and I come back to this every few months or so just to be impressed all over again. I’ve started to memorize even bits of the various solos and lead lines haha. The talent it takes to put something like this together - 15 or so songs all bleeding into one another like it’s an original production of their own original music - yet it’s not! It’s both respectful of the original music from the game yet also transformative in a way that is incredibly unique. I haven’t found anything like the Dr Pez channel (or Papeghin either, he’s insane) in my many years on this platform. I just needed to share my appreciation again. I love how the first half is mostly from child Link parts and focuses on 70s/80s prog and jazz and after the Echoes/Shadow Temple bridge as adult Link it transitions into heavier 90s/modern prog rock and metal. I'm on my 10th or so listening and still finding new layers and musical references (is that Protest the Hero I hear?). Fucking genius!

Thanks man ! You're one of the first to mention Protest the Hero, I am indeed a huge fan (Fortress being one of my all-time favorites !)

@@Marc_Papeghin I always check in on Protest the Hero but it hasn't fully clicked since Fortress. That album was a wondrous blend of musical technicality and adventure melody.

@@Marc_Papeghin any chance that a Majoras Mask sequel album is in the cards? That mask salesman giggle at the end of this is way too tantalizing :)

Naming an instrument the dude DOESN'T play could be a Double Jeopardy question.
