This story is partly autobiographical: Borges bumped his head on a freshly-painted window in 1938 and almost died of septicemia. He also had this obsession with being worthy of his tough military ancestors. The last sentence in the original Spanish changes into present tense, but there's a bit of future tense too, as in "Dahlmann firmly grips the knife, which maybe he won't be able to manage...". It's not that Dahlmann may or may not know how to use a knife, in general; it's that, come the moment, he might be unable to manage it. It's as if Borges expected us to believe that Dahlmann might have a hidden reserve of strength or innate knowledge in him.

Great video! Never noticed the change to present tense, but by doing so it presents the idea that Juan Dahlmann is now just Dahlmann. He may be his grandfather at this moment therefore he may know how to use the knife. And by being in the border of the south, he is in the borders of himself. We can expect that if he succeds on his fight, his passage to The South will be completed.

Love your Borges videos. Have not read/remembered this story, but I will. There are so many interesting Theories mentioned here. About adventure: I have some personal experience with this, and it sounds great to talk about, but it is so different in reality. You are thinking where you are going to sleep or what to eat all the time. And that is so boring.
