Almost been to all of the states in the US, and I could say, for the quality of living to cleanliness to the restaurants to the perfect climate, this city is the best. Although, they should not turn this beautiful place into a retirement city.

I have been to all 50 states, and Charleston is a real gem! I would not call their climate "perfect", as the heat & humidity for 4 months or so is pretty intense, and you always have a hurricane danger in Aug/Sept, but I love the city!

It is too expensive for most to retire to (in the city proper), but there has been a great influx at the beaches from those who have made piles of $$ in NY, NJ, MA, CT, IL, PA, etc. It will never be a Del Webb retirement village!

@@Name-kd5jj To clarify the position of New Yorkers: we didn't screw up the state - the insolent and corrupt politicians that have been in power ruined it for us =(. The funny thing is, we can't even vote them out of office because nobody here votes! During elections, the state sets up one or two polling station per town, and towns here can have hundreds of thousands of residents and so over time people just stopped voting because the process can take around 2 hours - and most of us are barely scraping by as it is and so wasting two more hours after a 12 hour work day just doesn't seem viable. TL;DR: New Yorkers didn't ruin NY - they're desperately trying to escape the warzone left behind by our ridiculous state government so that we can actually live happily. I'm currently in the planning stages =P.

I would love to visit Charleston. I have a friend who is from Charleston. My oldest sister and I met her when we lived in New York City. She sent me a photo when she got married. I lost her address. She is a very kind person. Miss Barbara Evans. I pray that God will protect her and her family almost everyday.

The gentrification started after Hugo in 1989, and the great leadership from the mayor, Riley. I was first there in the 1970s, and it was very run-down, but now every place south ofvBroad is $1 million+.

In the video they show at the visitor's center, "Forever Charleston", they do talk about earthquakes in the past, but greatest danger is in Pacific coast states.

Whether Charleston is the best in the south may be debatable and I am kinda partial to Savannah, but the city is beautiful. It is very walkable and open like Savannah. I have visited the city twice with my wife and want to come back again. I love the Fleet Landing Restaurant. It is amazing how easy it is to drive around the city. Definitely a welcome departure from the ATL for sure. My only drawback imo is the fact it is surrounded by water and that fact seems more obvious around the park area near the walls.

Savannah is a great southern city as well, butvthe area just beyond the Historic District can be a bit dangerous, and I think Charleston has better beaches. People are great in both places.

NOLA is a great town to visit, but nowhere near as convenient a location, and the Mississippi River sludge does not offer the water vistas of Charleston, and crime is much higher there, as is the hurricane danger. I like the music, food and architecture of NOLA, but think Charleston is a much more desirable place to live.

I do not like its location that well, and its airport does not have competitive fares in and out. Yes, it is a great party town, but do you want to live in constant party? Not me! The Garden District is nice, and I like the food/music scene, but I will take Charleston ALL day!

Jay1 Music Well, Boeing has plant here and so does Mercedes, Volvo is building a plant and will be ready in the next year or two. We also have a few software companies. I would say not that long, but you should have a job lined up before moving here or anywhere. Do you know anyone that lives here already? That would probably help.

I don't know where you are getting g your stats, but Charleston is not a dangerous city at all. Have been there numerous times, walk all over, even at night, and no problem. Crime issues are worse in Savannah or Southern cities like Richmond and New Orleans.

D. Lawrence the Indians didn’t build America. Europeans did. Majority of the natives also died due to illness that was spread around during that time. I live in East TN and in recent years a lot of different people have moved here (yankees, muslims, indians, etc...) These people do not exhibit the same values/morals that we do.
