Well things have changed over the last 40 years. When I was at UT working at Westown, Maryville was pronounced "murr-vul". I usually say "ville", but occasionally "vul" slips out.
All southern villes are pronounced that way as far as I know 🤣 I spent nearly 30 years in north georgia and middle Tennessee, and I ain't ever heard a ville pronounced as ville 🤣
Couple of corrections: Alcoa is not an acronym by definition but rather a shortened version of the company name even if they attempt to make it stand for something. The acronym A.L.C.O.A (which is how acronyms are often represented) stands for Attributable, Legible, Contemporaneous, Original, and Accurate and it's from the world of clinical research and data analysis. Lastly, Alcoa has been losing 1/4 billion dollars yearly for awhile and amongst job cuts and loss of profits is now shutting down so even if I wasn't being a litigious annoyance, the shutdown of the company means the "acronym" wouldn't be relevant since they no longer exist.
The south was largely settled by French English nobles who spoke both French and English. This informs a great deal of the southern accent where the first syllable is stressed rather than the second
The Sevierville one I pronounce it ‘suh-vur-vuhl’ Or ‘seh-veer-vuhl’ 😂 or if it’s my angry accent then I might really countrilly pronounce the ville in it 😂
Alcoa? The company? My grandfather was a metalworker for them here in Cleveland,Ohio starting from 1940 through his retirement. I've never heard it pronounced like Siri does. The way the woman said it isn't Southern, it's just the correct name of the company. Computers get stuff wrong. I take a bus along State Road which the computerized announcements pronounce "staych."
Lord have mercy Siri messes up Aynor, SC and many other places like Horry County. Makes everything sound sexual by saying anal and whorry as in whore. Thats far from how we pronouce many names around here. I tell you what?!
