Victoria's North-East Mainline is unique amongst rail lines as, from 1962, it was perhaps the only place in the entire world where two track gauges ran side by side for over 300kms, running from Melbourne to the Vic/NSW border at Albury-Wodonga. From 1962, the VR's Spirit of Progress, inaugriated back in 1938, transferred from the BG to SG line, with a second service, the Southern Aurora, being implemented as a joint effort by the VR and NSWGR, which continued running until 1986 by which time both expresses had been combined into the one train with a severely-reduced patronage.
This Trainz rendition of the North East, currently running from Melbourne's Flinders Street Station, over the steeply-graded section over the Great Dividing Range and beyond Seymour, about 120kms north, has been constructed to represent the golden era of the VR's SG operations during the mid to late 1970s, and is just the first stage in what will become a massive joint project by the Victrainz Modellers Group to reconstruct the entire North-East network of the Victorian Railways!
So today we ride the Southern Aurora from Melbourne, running via the Albion-Jacana Goods Loop for a run up the '100 mile long Siding' with X34 in charge for a tour of this massively Work in Progress leviathan of a route project.
