I'll never really look at this engine the same way again. This video is an extremely simplified cutaway of SpaceX's Raptor engine, currently in use powering the company's Starship prototypes. Even the simplified diagram really shows the level of engineering that goes into starting just one of these engines, and that really puts the engineering challenges of starting 28 of these on a Super Heavy Booster into perspective.

Raptor Startup Sequence:
-Several minutes before ignition, cryogenic fuel is run through the engine to avoid thermal shocks at startup.
-High pressure gas spins up both the Methane Turbopump and the Oxygen Turbopump.
-Cryogenic methane flows through the walls of the nozzle and combustion chamber to keep the engine from melting.
-After flowing through the nozzle, the methane is mixed with a small amount of liquid oxygen in the Fuel-Rich Preburner.
-A small amount of liquid methane is also mixed with the oxygen in the Oxygen-Rich Preburner.
-Both preburners ignite.
-Exhaust from the preburners spin turbines that now power the turbopumps.
-The exhaust from the Fuel-Rich Preburner consists of hot methane gas.
-The exhaust from the Oxygen-Rich Preburner consists of hot oxygen gas.
-Both gases enter the combustion chamber and mix through Coaxial Swirl Injectors.
-The main chamber ignites.

Here from Marcus. Having already thought I understood how Raptor FFCC worked from Everyday Astronauts video, this just made me realise i only just understand its principle, and not at all its plumbing. Ive watched your vid a number of times and still dont quite understand how the preburners are plumbed in with respect to the main chamber. Still, a jaw dropping vid. Well well done.
@raktor1996
@raktor1996 3 года назад
Yes, i have been looking at it too. I don't quite see how the oxygen gets through the turbopump. Also the pipe going into the methane turbopump looks very big to me, does the turbopump really need that much methane? I also don't understand how the 4 components (oxygen, methane, oxygen turbopump exhaust, methane turbopump exhaust) manage to combine with eachother in the injector area.

The plumbing on the methane side also includes the path to the bell dome in liquid form to cool it.
@matthewlee2424
@matthewlee2424 3 года назад
@@raktor1996 Hi David. If i recall correctly, the pre-burner (of both the O2 and the CH4) each uses a very 'rich' mixture of itself (with a little of the other) to spin up the turbines. The 'exhaust' from the pre burners, rather than being vented overboard actually goes into the main combustion chamber. I think that given 02 is the main tank (with CH4 being much smaller in proportion) this is the reason why the 02 preburner and main fuel pipe comes straight down into the engine, rather than being off to the side like the ch4 preburner. I might be wrong about this tho!

@wavetrex
@wavetrex 3 года назад
This is probably near the absolute peak of chemical rocket engines. Yes, it should be possible to build physically bigger full-flow-stage-combustion engines, but it doesn't mean they will be more efficient. Anything actually better, faster, more efficient, would have to use something else than "burning" as the source of energy for propulsion (fission, fusion...)

There's still aerospikes to look forward to! If they're actually doable, that is. Or the even more unlikely metallic hydrogen engine.
@cbboegh
@cbboegh 3 года назад
@@Bjawu Metallic hydrogen would not be chemical propulsion - and it's highly unlikely to be a thing. Aerospikes give very little improvement - particularly over clusters of many smaller engines.
@RENO_K
@RENO_K 3 года назад
@@Bjawu bruh search how scientist made metallic hydrogen, it's good sci-fi, but look at the limits, how can you store tons of metalic hydrogen, the pressure chamber would be too heavy that it becomes useless, there are more to designing chemical rockets than just the fuel and engine

Yes, I'd like a slower one with some explanation text, all the panning around is pretty, but it's not helping me understand how it works. Pressures, temperatures of inlet, chamber, outlet of each section would be good. Flow rate too, it's all estimation of course, only SpaceX knows for sure.
