How can one rock band be successful, underrated, hugely influential, and criminally overlooked all at the same time? Edgar Wright’s debut documentary THE SPARKS BROTHERS, which features commentary from celebrity fans Flea, Jane Wiedlin, Beck, Jack Antonoff, Jason Schwartzman, Neil Gaiman, and more, takes audiences on a musical odyssey through five weird and wonderful decades with brothers/bandmates Ron and Russell Mael celebrating the inspiring legacy of Sparks: your favorite band’s favorite band.
Directed by Edgar Wright. In Theaters June 18.

Funny Sparks live show story, I wasn't there but my friend was. They were playing the small Whiskey a Go Go nightclub in the early/mid 70's to a packed-house, rabid-Sparks-fan LA audience. They put on a great show and the crowd enthusiasm kept bringing them back for more encores. After a long while backstage with the raucous crowd relentlessly refusing to let the show end after the second (third?) encore, out comes the band for its last encore with Ron shirtless and barefoot, dressed only in a white towel around his waist with hair disheveled and soaking wet, as if it had interrupted his post-show shower - to the huge delight of the crowd. He sat down at the keyboard and played that last encore set like that. Hilarious, oddball Sparks stage humor.

The story of their family, all the childhood pictures, and knowing their father passed when they were so little and their momma kept on keeping on… “That was a mom.” I’m a mom and when Russel said that literally started crying. You did your momma proud, gentlemen, your father, too. I just want to hug them both and say thank you for singing your way❤️🎶

My sister left for Uni in 1979 (I was 8) and she left her records behind. Amongst the vinyl virtuosity were several Sparks albums. They sounded like several different bands. They became several of my favourite bands! Long live the Mael brothers!

So so glad this film has been made. Me and my sister and Dad had a total obsession with this band throughout the 70's. I remember going to our local record shop in Chesterfield, it was called "Some kinda mushroom" and when the guy who worked there (Colin) put the needle down, and played 'This town ain't big enough for the both of us' we all danced like lunatics (Colin included). I guess you had to be there! Ashamed to say I thought they were a British band......we thought anything a bit different came from our strange little country at that time. Me and sis also used to dress up as Sparks using Dad's and grandma's clothes and glasses.....getting those facial expressions right for Ron was quite a skill! Happy days :)

I can't wait to see the Sparks story told. I have talked about Sparks over the last 50+ years to anyone who I thought would listen. I hope Ron and Russell keep Sparks going as long as making the music is a labor of love and not just a job. Thank you to Sparks for making influential and compelling music. Rock on Sparks!

Anyone of a certain age (and I sincerely hope from any generation since the mid-1970's) gives these Guys the adoration they deserve. I remember seeing them at 9 years old on Top of The Pops the first time they performed 'This Town Ain't Big Enough'. Russell confused me with his slim body frame, long hair and incredibly high voice; Ron just terrified me. As I grew older, I began to appreciate their off-kilter view of The World and have loved their trademark piercingly-observed lyrics and fun, 'different to everyone else' music ever since. Their longevity speaks for itself and I am so happy that finally they are getting some wider recognition with this documentary and also creating the soundtrack for 'Annette'. LONG LIVE SPARKS!!

When friends and I saw sparks on their Two Hands One Mouth Tour I was expecting the infamous multi media extravaganza wild crazy meta mind bending fourth wall breaking visuals and skits backed by an impeccable live band. What we got instead was the two of them on stage, Ron with a keyboard Russ with a mic and that was it. No backing tracks. But fuck it was one of the best shows I've ever seen, he hardly used any reverb on his voice either. Was impeccable all on its own, they even made My Baby's Taking Me Home sound incredibly moving, dynamic and epic and how the hell is that even possible? It's the same words over and over like a mantra until it reaches the punchline. To make it from the off ridiculously genius Ron even did a medley which he just simply called "a gentle warm up" all on his own, spanning decades in minutes. We were thrilled! As the double feature set rolled on.. We were so entranced, we decided to take Ron on in starring matches, which 😂 he rose to the challenge he saw us gazing at him and he took us on. It was really something ha ha I'll never forget that. I love this band and seeing them so nakedly, without any effects or over the top high budget show really felt like something special and daring.. They even confirmed this at the end of their show relating to their earliest days as a cabaret duo on a club circuit and said they wanted to do a tour harking back to that. this film also delivered on every level without ruining the mystique of this act
@calebhernandez681

Glad you enjoyed the show, but really, the title of the tour was kind of a hint that they’d be taking a minimalist approach for that particular set of performances 😂.

Just got back from seeing it today - not at Sundance, mind (I'm working poor), but at my local Alamo Drafthouse Cinema. An inspiring and uplifting film. I always have cheered for the misfits and outsiders, the ones who never seem to get the girl or put a foot right in the public mind; they're my kind of people, my kind of music, my kind of art.

And about time their story was told. There is an interesting story I read in a UK Music Mag yonks ago where Sparks supported Queen in the early 70s (or maybe the other way around?) and asked Brian May to join the band. He refused and they said on the lines that it was a shame, but his band was going nowhere. :)

I've always wondered why some bands are punished for quirkiness or humor as Sparks, The Tubes, Herman's Hermits, and The Proclaimers have been and yet The Beatles, The Who, The Kinks, and a host of others can put out absolute novelty songs and will not receive any blowback.

The wiki page says that their hit "When Do I Get to Sing 'My Way'" was described as sounding like Pet Shop Boys or Erasure. No shit... I really like this song and for 25 years I honestly thought it was sung by the Pet Shop Boys. Never questioned it. I am shocked never to have learned the real name of the band before today. And at first I actually got a mockumentary vibe from the trailer for that reason. Time to learn more about them. Must watch for sure, but also a discovery tour in Spotify is warranted.

I'm watching the documentary now and it is so amazing that when you figure out the people you've always enjoyed like the things that you enjoy as well. From Edgar wright directing to clips from members of new order, back,, haircut 100 and many other groups. The biggest problem I have with Sparks, and, the band, is that I just don't enjoy Russell's singing. It's just too high pitch and almost medieval Goofy. The funny part about all of this is until I started hearing about this documentary I hadn't thought about Sparks in 30 years. Back when MTV first started they didn't have a lot of videos because bands didn't make videos but a lot of the more artistic bands did so you would have bands like Sparks, Adam and the ants, dexys midnight runners, madness and really good David Bowie videos. Anyhow all of these videos would be in the regular lineup because other bands hadn't made videos yet but you would sometimes have clips of live performances by the well-established bands. About a year later MTV was god-awful as it was mostly things like loverboy and starship are REO Speedwagon mixed in with some other bullshitpop. Anyhow I can't recommend this documentary high enough because it's got a lot of talented people talking about how much they love this band. I love everything about the band myself except for their music. It just does not suit my taste but I completely respect their desire to make distinctive music without relying on whatever is hot at the moment. Anyhow great documentary

During the 80’s they had a bunch of songs featured in some fairly popular movies, like Fright Night, Valley Girl, and Rad, as well as some not-so-popular movies. It seems this kind of exposure coupled with their contemporaneous “local” success in LA may have made them seem bigger than they actually were, because they definitely never sold a lot of records. Too bad, as Sparks’ brand of new wave and synth pop was just as catchy as, and certainly a lot funnier than, most of the stuff from those genres out at the time.
