This man was alive during Reconstruction and I'm sitting here listening to him sing. Wonderful.

This is lovely. “His career began before 1900 in Mexico, as a twelve-string guitarist in early Mariachi bands. He then established himself as an entertainer with the Rabbit's Foot Minstrels. Later on, around 1937, he went back out on the road and worked for a while around Texas, playing in Cajun bands and, again, with Mexican mariachi bands.” By 1900 he was 33, all those years jamming Mariachi music must have influenced him and his early country blues-style somehow...

Thanks for sharing! Some of this stuff can be ridiculously hard to find - although, I guess it's better than it used to be... more and more of it is anthologized and available digitally, at least...

Correct on both counts. Daddy Stovepipe's real name was Johnny Watson and Mississippi Sarah was his wife Sarah Watson.

Lol, that's my dad. He just loves blues and it's just a username. Maybe some cows are a bit ticked off that you have milk in your nickname even though you don't procduce any ;)

That's where The Straycats took their inspiration for "Rock This Town" from...ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-m-a6ct8aalg.html

He's great with Sarah and with Whistlin' Joe (as 'Sunny Jim'). This is from there Bluebird years? Is Sarah playing the jug here?

Wait, isn't this '(I'll Be Glad When You're Dead), You Rascal You" not "The Spasm" ?

I think it can be either. In Clarence Williams' version no one is called a spasm so it wouldn't fit in that case. No idea which name came first
