Only thing i have is that you should be cautious with letting the spectator shuffle - i know people who, in the process of shuffling the cards, invert some of the cards (some people do it when they riffle shuffle) It's probably a good idea to see how your spectator shuffle cards prior to doing this trick :)

Ohhh, she could've pulled a great gag on you, Brian. As she was going through identifying possible cards and she dealt yours in the reject pile, she could have gone through the entire "hand", pick up the "possibles", concentrate really hard, bet you a soda that the next card she flips over is yours... and then fish through the reject pile for yours to flip it face down. :)

If you forgot the orientation of the "Psychic" cards you are holding you can do it like " hey, I feel like there is a non"psychic" card that is in hand right now" (pick somewhere in the middle then put it on the garbage pile)

This series of Brian teaching his daughter is honestly the most adorable thing I've seen lately that isn't a puppy or kitten.

This girl is a star! Quick witted, personable, and adorable. The dynamic between daddy and daughter is so wholesome and enjoyable to watch.

I think it's more elegant if you only use all the sevens and all the aces. The ace of diamonds is symmetrical, so if none of them are flipped it's the ace of diamonds.

You could actually use one more diamond...any diamond. If you don't see any card flipped when looking for the chosen card, then you will know it is the diamond with the symmetrical design.

But isn't she flipping a part of the deck when she's doing the Reno-Shuffle?

I love this trick! Like you, I've been doing this since I was very young. I notice you haven't used the 8's. If you look closely, you'll find the 8 of Hearts, Clubs, and Spades are also one way cards. They all have 5 pips facing one way, while 3 face the opposite way. It's a bit more subtle than the 9's, but they work.

Such wholesome content for a very not wholesome time.

The things that I think can also be added to this trick to make it even more difficult to figure out: 1. Try to pick like only black cards first and then, when spectators will be like "well, he's simply picking black" surprisingly pick something like 7 of Diamonds to confuse them a bit more. 2. Also I think it's a good idea to pick one card like Queen of Hearts to make it even more "random". The thing is that if you can't see any upside down card then you know that they picked the Queen :)

Hey Brian, I can't wait to see you teach Josie your truck Naughty knotty (tying a knot while holding either end of the rope)... I wonder how many do-overs she'll ask for before losing hope?

If you want to make the trick feel more personal, you can add in the following two details: * Only use cards that you and the mark 'agree' are psychic. You only ever offer the asymmetric cards, but they feel like they have some control because you let them discard some. * Let them go through the pile of non-psychic cards and pick one cards. Tell them to infuse it with their personal psychic energy. Add that to the pile of psychic cards. (Complain that their energy might interfere with yours, but you'll fight through it anyway.) This obfuscates and distracts from the card picking process, and makes the deck you've assembled seem more fair. You then do the trick just as he says. There is one exception, in that if nothing is flipped, you know they picked the one symmetric card by chance (therefore, you can always put it into the maybe pile).

When Josie accidentally put the psychic card in the wrong pile, I thought she was employing the old magic/mentalism trope of appearing to mess up, but then correcting it at the last moment. If she pulled that off, it probably would have blown Brian's unsuspecting mind.

Don't you ruin the orientation trick the minute you shuffle them though? If you take half the deck in your hands, rotate it, shuffle, you've lost the orientation.

One danger whenever you let the audience member shuffle is that they'll mess up the orientation. At 2:13, she asked if she should do a wash, which you had to prevent her from doing. I first learned to shuffle from my father, who plays bridge. Since many of his decks of cards have backs with orientations, it always bothered me as a young kid that the way he split the deck and squared the cards would always rotate one of the piles. When I was learning to shuffle, I was very conscious to avoid doing that, just to preserve some small bit of order. However, since I know my father always mixes the orientations when he shuffles, I would never be able to let him shuffle the deck when I perform this.

I thought I got it quite clearly and obviously but I'm confused by the end. Wernt the 5 cards she had left a mix of up and down? So how can she tell which Is the card??

I do a variation of this trick. But select only 5. Then ask the spectator to pick 1-4 cards. One of the card can be symmetrical, sometimes also figure cards have their suits in the middle. My deck has two I can use. It makes it very hard to see any patterns.

I love this trick, but I never trust the spectator shuffling the cards, they always end up dropping them on the floor and screwing it all, anyway!

Holy Hell! I can't wait till I'm quite a bit older, watching Josie teaching HER kids all these tricks.

Wait, if you let the mark shuffle the cards, what happens if they shuffle the cards so they are both up and down? Where do you fix the order of the cards so that they are all pointed in the same way? Seems you would be better letting the mark shuffle the non-psychic cards while you shuffled the psychic cards, had them select from the psychic cards, and then you shuffle the psychic cards together with the non-psychic cards. Maybe even ask the spectator which of a few different piles you should deal the shuffled cards into, and then after they are dealt out, work on removing the piles. You already know which card they have by the point they start removing cards.

I love how this was one of the first I learned in scam school and the moment he started picking cards I knew it was it :D thx for remembering me this exists

Hey Brian how to make this trick work when the spectator asks that if he or she could shuffle the cards and then they accidently drop a few cards while shuffling as they generally don't know how to shuffle. And then some cards are face up and some are face down. And this happend with me when i was performing it for my cousin *the one kids trick you were talking about 😂

Do one better and flip the cards from the deck face down onto the table face up past the picked card and say “I bet you (whatever) the next card I turn over will be the card you picked”. Since you have already turned over the card, the other person will assume you are going to turn over the next card in the deck. Having seen the card already on the table the person will readily take whatever the bet is. Instead reach over and turn over the card already face up on the table. It will win the bet every time. It only works once though.

Only annoying thing with these one way deck tricks is when you have an eeeediot who cant shuffle properly and turns half the deck around when shuffling and now you have 25 upside down cards🤣

Don't do this trick for someone that practices cardistry :') They're gonna go all fancy on the shuffle and pay 0 respect to the orientation of the cards as long as the backs are symmetrical.

I saw you picking a bunch of odd values, so I thougt about it had something to do with it. Then I saw the 6 and then realized how it exactly worked at that time.

My dad did a variation of this trick where after picking the special cards out he would give you the option to swap one of the cards with the discard pile; I guess it still works since if they pick the one card with symmetry, all the other cards are the same way around and you can get it by process of elimination.

With some decks the printing can be slightly misaligned, and this means you can use most, if not all, of the court cards.

How'd you get the other person not to mess up the facing when they shuffle the cards? When riffle shuffling people tend to mix the cards head to head right?

Whenever someone asked me in the past to shuffle I always went straight for the casino wash. Many magicians were not happy with me.

The thing is, if she went ahead and did the casino shuffle of spreading them all out and then moving them around and bring them back together, the trick would have failed.

I do add one symmetrical card to the selected stack, to confuse critical spectators. If they randomly choose that card, there is then no card in different orientation. If they like to inspect the deck after the trick, this is a convincer... :-)

This trick is actually hard, how can you be sure your audience won't shuffle the deck in a way that messes up the card orientation?

Any reason to not use the 8's? They follow the same principle....

I wonder if they take your cards then split the deck and do a bridge shuffle, so now the cards are every direction...

i learned this in 6th grade as well. in my case, i did it with hanafuda cards. they were super thick but still do-able.
