“We shall conquer!” These were the words of Benito Mussolini, known as Il Duce in 1940. But just three years later, on July 10th 1943, Allied troops led by Montgomery and Patton began to land in Sicily, completing one of the greatest amphibious operations ever attempted, and beginning The Battle of Italy. This sparked the end of the great facist dream in Italy and the new Roman Empire Mussolini had dreamt of. It was to be the beginning of the end for Il Duce.

The title of this video leads you to believe the video is about Mussolini, but is just an average video of WWII in Italy. Mussolini coverage amounted to about 2 to 3 minutes of the video. I consider this Click Bait!

One of the men in one of those bombers that rained down destruction on the Monte Casino monastery was Walter M. Miller who served as a radioman and tail gunner in a bomber crew. Miller was so affected by the needless and pointless destruction of the 1,300 year old medieval treasure of civilization (and the oldest existing Christian church in the world at the time) that it became the inspiration for his very popular and award winning 1959 post-apocalyptic novel entitled “A Canticle for Liebowitz,” which in part examines how humans build and destroy edifices, instituions and societies and destroy history with them only to begin all over again.

It seems to me the destruction of the abbey and town was the result of frustration & anger from the failures of the attack plans of the allied generals and the high cost of blood with those failed attacks. Those two things made it necessary to have the town and abbey wiped from the face of the earth despite being strategic disasters. Fitting that General Clark barely got 1 days press coverage for taking Rome, especially since so many countries had troops fighting there. He barely got to his hotel room and the D-Day invasion began. Churchill wanted to attack Germany through the Balkans, so British & American armies would be with the Russian army preventing Stalin from taking all of Eastern Europe. Stalin wanted them to go through France for a two front war and for the USSR to capture all of Eastern Europe. Franklin chose to agree with Stalin setting the stage for the Cold War to follow.

I found all of these big battles episodes on double DVD set available in my local supermarkets cheap video Ben. I think I paid $3 for the set. It's crazy how many of these other companies like war stories just rip off the big battles episodes. They don't even hide the initial trailer from you. It's just repackaged stuff from the 50s maybe the 60s. It's strange because Amazon does the same thing. They have these 5-hour episodes that are all just battle zone but their marketed as mother Russia and time to fight and all sorts of things there's about six of them. Quite often different episodes or different programs I mean will have the same episodes in them.

Akin to WW1, where the Austro Hungarians were up against the Italians, across the Carpathian Range; this again was probably the most difficult front, due to the tricky mountainous terrain, where the Germans resisted with courage, fanaticism, and skill. Of course, it's completely crazy to expect an Army, to win a war without CAS Close Air Support, and an aerial interception. Most of the time, the Wehrmacht was fighting without air cover.

Overall, this was a misleading piece .For ex, It gives the impression the landing at Anzio was rebuffed - but the Allies did eventually fight their way out. It also allows General Mark Clark to give himself free passes - this man was a shameless self promoter. He had the chance to encircle and trap Kesselring's troops at Monte Casino but instead chose to dash off to Rome (an open city) in order for the photo-op of "liberating" Rome (he had big political ambitions). This lengthen the war in Italy by many months, perhaps even the war itself. Countless soldiers died unnecessarily to feed his ego.
