Goodyear Dunlop always present forward-looking concepts at the Geneva Motor Show. This year that is especially true; the Goodyear Eagle 360 shows a Goodyear tyre in the form of a sphere. But it is not only the new form which has plenty of potential, there are some pretty exciting new technologies baked into the design as well.

I suppose breaking happens when the electric motor turns off the magnetic fields, so the tires will break against the car's body. I like it because it's a smoother ride with less bumps and white noise.
@troyx0

If the electric interface with the tyres fail, the chassis will simply drop on the spheres. What happens when you park? Will you require a constant electric charge to maintain a magnetic field between tyre and chassis?

@Alloyaha
@Alloyaha 8 лет назад
+evo emperor Actually with the foam-like material, the contact surface area with the road is greater than current tires. No power needs to be sent to the sphere (although you could through magnetic induction; think wireless cell phone charging, same technology). In this case, just passive magnets (like on your refrigerator, but far stronger) are in the wheels, while electromagnets with alternating fields within the car's socket (body), would be responsible for rotating and turning the spheres.

how would you steer, apply torque to the wheels, brake, handbrake, stop the car from dropping onto the wheels when the car isn't being used, replace tires without sophisticated equipment, and how could you make the magnets strong enough to keep the wheels in line, steer, and brake at high speeds without being too strong to the point that you'd basically get sucked into other magnetic wheel thingies...I mean it sounds really intriguing but I dont think this'll ever be a reality

Honestly I came up with this tire when I was 14ish, by 16 I found every flaw and work around but seeing someone make it and me being 34 now i will tell the world dont hold your breath on this idea cause we would need to change all roads around the world to make these possible. Simply because we know already what asphalt does to normal tires and how much tread we lose a year, the ball will eventually become "out-of-round" therefore creating a wobble to the tire.... the price tag on repairs would be substantial for that work around, which would be individual plates to replace making up one complete sphere..... the idea is beautiful but it will never work, you would need super hard tires and then change every Road to some kind of material like acrylic then you would need to make that acrylic some kind of rough surface for grip, workarounds for the weather conditions..... there's just so much for just a tire. Oh I figured out the best way to attach to the car as well but even then we are talking pricy repairs for when something breaks.

You forget we've spent the best part of a century perfecting today's wheel/tyre combo.. but because of that, cars are old news, watch a commercial for a car now and they'll be all about "driving a change" or "the future", when really it's the same engines, brakes, suspension, chassis as 20 years wrapped in pretty LEDS... 😐 I'm designing a spherical wheel concept myself, I was inspired by the rsq from I,robot 🙂

@Alloyaha
@Alloyaha 8 лет назад
There would have to be a serious fault in the electrical system or computer coding for that to happen. Consider this, the exact same sort of system is what modern airliners use. Needless to say, those computers almost never fail, and when they do, there's a backup. Multiple layers of redundancy protect against failure, creating a "fail-safe" environment. So should it fail, it fails to a safe state. In this case the car would simply use the remaining functional spheres/tires to steer to the side of the road, slow down, and come to a safe stop.

There is no fucking way those tires are ever going to be used in cars. The sphere is the only fucking three dimensional shape to have only one point in contact with the ground, that would mean to have almost no friction at all. If this did work couldn't you just use one smart, active tire in the center of the vehicle and 4 passive tires around the perimeter?
@Alloyaha
@Alloyaha 8 лет назад
+Hexspa Sorta, problem is for torsional forces (aka turning), you really need two points to turn economically (think segway). While you could use only one sphere, you might need to include a gyroscope to overcome some torsional forces in unique situations. Like if the ball hits ice and tries to steer, it'll just spin in place and not change the car's vector. If you have 2, or more, then it's far easier. Besides, 4 points of contact with the road are ideal, so why make a car more expensive by adding a fifth, not to mention the need for an extra socket in the middle of the body, taking up valuable cargo space within the vehicle.

This won't work for at least two reasons. 1. A sphere tire has a very low contact area with the road, therefore less grip on the road. This has a negative effect on the performance of the car, e.g. braking distance. 2. They have to increase the width of cars and also the roads or increase the length of cars, equals longer traffic jams and they need to adjust the length of parking lots. Both would cost too much to be beneficial.
@thepope2412
@thepope2412 7 лет назад
Two more reason 1. Think about what would happen if you ran over a nail or manhole cover 2. The tire would have to be exerting a force on the car in order to lift it, and what will power that source.
@1312_PV
@1312_PV 7 лет назад
Or have the vehicle exert the force to the tyre...
@thepope2412
@thepope2412 7 лет назад
Both would have to be true in order for this to work. Just think about how a levitating magnet toy works.
@1312_PV
@1312_PV 7 лет назад
With only electromagnet in one side and static device (magnets, metal piece) it can work.
@OrinokawaMizuki
@OrinokawaMizuki 7 лет назад
This is just due on how the video is presented. One, the real sphere wheels would be flatter when in use, just like real circular tyres. Two, the car actually would be in the same width as today's car or even smaller. The video designer just choose a bigger car design to show on the sphere wheels work.

while interesting and plausible i doubt the price for the technology will come down enough to make it worth putting in vehicles for the few pro's it has over the rather simple, cheap and effective wheel. i personally think we would likely get hover car's first due hovering providing far more pro's to make it worth putting in vehicles but price could always prove me wrong and so could science.

@afanofcanta5357
@afanofcanta5357 8 лет назад
+RedSquirreLx i guess the magnetic field in the tires and in the car would repel each other so the car floats just above the tires.
@freethenorth7583
@freethenorth7583 8 лет назад
+RedSquirreLx It floats on the tires, not the ground.
@justingrafstein3046
@justingrafstein3046 8 лет назад
+RedSquirreLx That's not how it works. The wheels have opposing magnetic fields so the car "floats" above them. Maybe if there were strong electromagnets under the road then it could just float above the ground, but then what happens if you drop a wrench or screw on the road? It gets stuck there. The idea of levitating cars is going to be a lot more complicated than just a magnetic road repelling a magnetic car. It's not just a rubber ball in a socket. It is a magnetic rubber ball in a socket. It's the same as the difference between a magnet on a road (which would have the same effect as a rock on the road) and a magnet on a magnetic road ( it will either be attracted to the road or get repelled, wither way they must interact with each other).

@jordanbuckingham8117
@jordanbuckingham8117 7 лет назад
I love innovation, but I would be remiss if I didn't point out some issues with this tire. One, significantly less grip. Consider the outer edge of a tire, and how of a tire is contact with the road and thus can handle a greater degree of force acted upon it before sliding. consider a sphere and how LITTLE contact it has with the ground. Two, the suspension, while electromagnetic suspension is an intriguing idea, it would have little in in the way of shock absorption, because if its held in place by magnets, if the tire moves out of that alignment of magnets it will come free from the suspension and come in contact with the car. Not only that, but the energy requirements of such electromagnets would be far more than we would be able to fit in a car economically. Finally, the main problem, if the tire doesn't come into contact with the car, how does the car drive the tires forward? How would the car's engine turn them in any direction? The car must come in contact with the tires or it will have no control over how they spin. What would the braking system even look like? Fortunately all these problems have solutions, like having the tires mounted via ball bearings. All new technology is going to have growing pains, but I'm exited for them none the less

@1312_PV 7 лет назад
To move the tyres either the wheel or the car may have electromagnets in one part and metal parts in the other so to exert a force in a specific direction (front electromagnets activated, or rear ones).
@jordanbuckingham8117
@jordanbuckingham8117 7 лет назад
That could potentially work, however it would be difficult to implement, MASSIVELY inefficent, and would require far more energy (both in terms of mechanical and electrical) than that of a regular car by several orders of magnitude. In order for this to be feasible, we would need to fit a fusion reactor under the hood of the car just so the wheel's don't fall off. And while magnetic propulsion solves for acceleration, it doesn't solve the problem of how to stop the car. Which is equally important as getting the thing to move, if not more so.
@1312_PV
@1312_PV 7 лет назад
Stopping is just the reverse of accelerating. The rest is probably true.
@jordanbuckingham8117
@jordanbuckingham8117 7 лет назад
Grammatically yes, stopping is the opposite of accelerating. Mechanically, no. They are very different beasts. Its why we don't shift cars into reverse when you want to stop your car. If you want to say that by reversing the magnetic acceleration you could stop the car. Yes, yes you could, but it would be a very slow stop, incapable of sudden deceleration in case of emergency, as you would be working against momentum instead of with it.

@Alloyaha
@Alloyaha 8 лет назад
+Shawn Zhang Well driver sensation/experience will be disappearing more and more. Much like the early Model-A racers, with open top roofs and little muffler to speak of, modern day cars are far quieter, safer, and more controllable with power steering. I suppose if you really wanted to "feel" the car when driving, you could enable a "Sport" mode that forced the driving computer to move the wheels with tighter lateral tolerances, importing more lateral g-forces, preserving the racing feel. These cars would otherwise lack all transmissions, shifting, and most likely be purely electric vehicles.
