You could use a single strand of rope for same application, but have 2 tails off each friction hitch. Form a bight with the secondary rope then pass the free ends of the second rope around the ground line and through the bight. Its just a simple matter of adding turns around the ground line for more friction. 3 is usually the lowest number of turns. The above setup is just a prussik that hasn't been tied off, letting your topper use the ends to his liking.

Could you also use a large steel bullring or rigging plate and run two seperate lines off creating the same situation

Quick and easy one less rope- take the rigging rope and put two half hitches or marlin hitch whichever you prefer on the two places where the tail and the spider leg would go. Leave the same amount of tail to tie a bowline back to to the rope
