British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and his wife Akshata Murty reached the Akhshardham temple in Delhi on Sunday morning to offer prayers. Sunak, who is in Delhi to attend the G20 Summit, called himself a “proud Hindu” on Friday during a media interaction, expressing his will to visit a temple during his stay in the national capital.

Rishi Sunak is allowed to practice what he believes in. It becomes newsworthy matter only in India. In Britain his religion hardly matters as long as he does his job as a PM. In India we have an unhealthy obsession with religion. When the ISRO chief goes to a temple, it becomes a matter of criticism or of celebration depending on which side of the ideological divide you are. Religion is your personal equation with the Supreme power. As long as it doesn't come in the way of your professional responsibilities, nobody should bother about it. Rishi's faith has nothing to do with his Primeministership. Margaret Thatcher who was a Christian was very successful as a PM. Boris Johnson practising the same religion made a mess of the economy. So, why bring religion into it?
