The Spirit Temple in Ocarina of Time is a favorite dungeon by many of the games' fans. The Spirit Temple's music is powerful in its sense of nostalgia, but also mystery. What were some of the real world influences on the Spirit Temple's architecture and its theme music, and what can we learn about the feelings the song was designed to invoke? I present to you the final video in my series on Ocarina of Time's dungeons music: The Spirit Temple's Music in Ocarina of Time and it's Real World Influences.

My personal favorite dungeon theme from OoT! Just need to point out that if the instruments are to be listed in order of appearance, the dilruba would be listed before the darbuka. I just love how the first percussive note seems to hit out of nowhere in this song. Great job identifying all of them!

And I've always seen Rick and Evy as analogous to Link and Zelda. Heck, one of my big hopes for BotW 2 is that Nintendo leans into the whole "explore an ancient civilization" aspect and lets Link and Zelda finally travel on an adventure together, a la Rick and Evy in the Mummy movies (although the 2021 trailer splashed cold water on that idea).

I like the theory that the goddess of the sand is actually twinrova, who convinced the gerudo to worship her while waiting for the one destined to try and conquer the triforce, i.e. Gannondorf. It fits in so well with the duality if the temple and why the hylians believe she is evil
@SaveDataTeam
@SaveDataTeam 3 года назад
I remember reading this theory while doing research for this video, and I can totally see that. I think the best thing about Ocarina of Time is how much is left unsaid and how so many people have been able to fill in the cracks with so many interesting and reasonable conclusions.
@linkthepig4219

Almost like how the statue within the temple is a human woman with a king cobra wrapped around her; it's like the cobra is the belief of a divine natural force/goddess, and the Gerudo lady grins as she receives worship when in reality she is simply using the snake statue to pretend to be divine. It seems like a sacred beast of the desert, but truly, it's a model used by a greedy mortal person pretending to be a goddess or golden cobra or whatever.

I always assumed it was a statue of the first Gerudo woman, who was eventually looked at as a deity as time went on. The Gerudo themselves have a rough reputation, so the Hylians thinking that she's evil wouldn't be a big surprise. Down the road, I started to wonder if it represented Din. No matter what, it's a fun and enjoyable mystery, and has one of my favorite dungeon songs from a Zelda game, ever.

@playcube4564
@playcube4564 2 года назад
spoilers i think the lore for the gorons is that they basically come in and started squatting, and then the god of the fire temple got angry and started eating them so they smashed him with a hammer, and then he gets revived as the boss of the fire temple by ganondorf explains why the fire temple is so different since it'd be a place of worship made by someone else, the nearby fairy fountains might be linked with it too.

I speculate that the Goddess of the Sand *is* Din, or an aspect of her specific to the desert. Toward the beginning of the game, the Great Deku Tree recounts the legend of Hyrule's creation, in which Din is said to have created "the red earth." At this point in the cutscene, we see the canyon leading to Gerudo Valley--simple re-use of assets I'm sure, but noteworthy in context; in any case, the rocks of both Gerudo Valley and the desert have a distinct reddish hue. Note also that Din is associated with fire, which symbolically links her to the hot, dry climate of the desert and harsh sun conditions, and besides the numerous Egyptian-style sun motifs in the Spirit Temple, many of the puzzles involve fire or sunlight and sun imagery. Finally, Din's Triforce virtue, Power, is the one most associated with the combat-ready and proud Gerudo people. I think the ancient ancestors of the Gerudo primarily worshiped Din and developed iconography for her that they saw in the environment around them and readily associated with Power: suns, birds of prey, and serpents.

I think he also tried to make himself a god and wanted people to worship. He took over Aten and wanted to start Atenism. trying to get away from a polytheistic religion which was traditional in Egypt. His mom is Tiye also. It was said that Nefretiti and Akhentan were the parents of King Tut which is cool. Atenism was worshiping a sun god I think. Just some random history. ^-^

I come back yearly to watch this series grow and evolve. It not only renews my love of the Zelda franchise but it makes me sad that most games don't seem to think about their music this deeply anymore.

Dude, I grew up with the Collector’s Disc on GameCube, but I didn’t have a memory card so I would just sit on the title screen because one of two cutscenes would play and the one I loved the most was the scene of Nabooru being attacked by Twinrova while this song played in the background. The song would open on Link standing above her before Koume and then Kotake poof into existence. They all stare at Nabooru for a few seconds before she gets up to try and run. But then the twins attack and the scene fades out to white. Never being able to progress more than the first two or three dungeons, I always thought Nabooru was the villain character in this scene, but regardless, I thought it looked cool the way it was shot and the Spirit Temple music playing over it quickly became one of my favorite tracks in the game.

I can recite _hundreds_ of Zelda tracks by heart, but I never gave enough attention to the more atmospheric ones. Thank you for giving me a newfound appreciation for the dungeon/temple themes!

For anyone wanting to know what the tonality Koji Kondo uses, because the video only covers the vague influence, well.... It's a mix of tonalties. Right at the start, the synth stabs are outlining a typical motif you'd find in Phrygian. Phrygian, is the third mode of the major scale with these intervals: 1 b2 b3 4 5 b6 b7. That is, our root, minor second, minor third, perfect fourth, perfect fifth, minor sixth, and minor seventh. That half step move from the root to the minor second, is a common motif in compositions written in the Phrygian mode. The key center is G, so we're dealing with this pool of notes: G Ab Bb C D Eb F. Right at the beginning of the piece, we hear F moving to G, then from C to Bb, that's harmonized in parallel fourths. Then it moves from F to Ab to G, then does so again in another octave, again, harmonized in parallel fourths. So that's all well and good, right? Well, after this introduction of sorts, we're still in this Egyptian, Middle-Eastern flair, and it comes out MUCH more powerfully in the bulk of the song. The tonalities used here are a mix of various tonalities that change depending on the line. They are: * Phrygian Dominant = Which is just Phrygian with a major third instead of a minor third. Very Egyptian in sound. * Byzantine Scale = This is the scale that you get if you start off of Hungarian minor's fifth degree. * Good ol' Phrygian. The reason I say it's a mix, because a lot of notes are given half step embellishments, and these string of half steps are common in these kinds of scales. And it's actually not all that uncommon to change what you're doing right in the middle of a composition. The piece is still mostly Phrygian, but it's really looked at as nothing more than an outline, because a lot of its cooler notes and intervals are given heavy embellishment and changes depending on mood and feel. This is what makes these what Joe Stump calls "The dark scales of metal" so expressive sounding.

Ocarina is a master piece that no game has ever beaten I mean absolutely no game in my heart will ever surpass this game. This is my most beloved and precious game of all time I could play it a million times and still fresh in my heart. The music the story this game had it all back in the 64 era. I wish Nintendo would top another Zelda like ocarina of time I never felt the same way ever again in my life.

Fantastic finish to this Ocarina of Time Temple series. I think this song and the temple design definitely have the most depth out of any of the previous Temple themes that were covered. Forest Temple is still my favorite but Spirit Temple is a close second for me. Looking forward to seeing what you explore next. Possibly Majora's Mask?

Great video, I i learned a whole lot watching this, especially in regards to the various instruments such as the duduk, dilruba and darbuka. I also never guessed that the updated Gerudo symbol was a reference to Horus, learned something new. One thing i want to point out though, before i forget, in Sikhism, the practitioners are called Sikhs, but the word is pronounced as seek, not sick, despite how the word looks. I watched your Fire Temple video first before finding this one, definitely enjoying the series so far!

Plus I love the music in that one. Not just temples but locations, like Outset Island or the Korok place
