The last of the seat timbers. And I thought I'd share part of the process.
These seat timbers are pattern up. So I only have to position the pattern correctly on the top and draw around them with a pencil. I keep the point of thd pencil tight against the pattern.
Then onto the bandsaw to remove thd waste. Now, when I cut the waste away, I'm cutting right on top of the pencil line. To be absolutely perfect, I would want to cut and remove a tiny amount of the pencil line with the bandsaw. But, as with everything in life, it's not quite as perfect as I'd like, but it's blooming close.
Then in the vice to finish with the Spokeshave.
I love using the #151 Spokeshave. Mine is a marriage of a couple of makers. A Record body with a Marples cap. Some people struggle with a Spokeshave. They do take some getting used too. And this video should help you with your Spokeshave problems. So great Spokeshave tips like holding the tool at an angle makes so much more sense, and improves your work.

Never tried a camber on a spokeshave iron. I can see how it would work though much like on a jack plane. Just what I needed ... an excuse to own another spokeshave !!!

I would say have two blades. One straight and one cambered. Or two spokeshaves... Or more Spokeshaves if you don't want mess about with the irons.

Thank you. I think it happens to all of us at some point. Slippery side down though 🙈 Anyhow, the Spokeshave 👌👌👌 I love this one.

@@twcmaker A spokeshave and a card scraper strike me as a match made in heaven for this sort of job.

Thanks for another great instructional video. One workshop I worked in had a compass plane, I never needed to use it but would that have worked or is a compass plane only for convex curves?
@twcmaker
@twcmaker 4 месяца назад
@rowancrafts Oooo.. I love this. I have a metal bodied compass plane. An early Stanley 113, I think. Anyhow, they can be used on concave and convex shapes. We have to look at the point of the plane. When they were wooden it was a static curve made for a specific task. When Stanley made a metal version (that would concave and convex) The curve of the sole is not a consistent, constant curve. So they are a bit... I won't say useless. Let's say not touching in all the right places. But these pieces of wood in cutting, are an accurate radius. So the Spokeshave will do really well. The plane on the same piece would have been ok. But not quite as flexible as the tiny sole of the Spokeshave. We have to remind ourselves that Stanley was in the business of making tools and lots of money. I've yet to find a better metal bodied compass plane; than a wooden one set to/ made for the correct radius. My compass plane has been used a few times. If this seat timber was say 50mm thick or more, I might have used the compass plane to take the high spots off. But, for now it stays on the shelf. Kunz still make compass planes to almost the Stanley pattern. They're not cheap. A jig and a router might be better these days.

As usual, an informative video. Thank you. Would you use a 113 on that curve.

I've got an old 113. I wouldn't waste my time (with mine), the Spokeshave is great at this.

(at 4:09) Looks like a flat faced sole, why would yo not use a round soled spokeshave here?
@twcmaker
@twcmaker 4 месяца назад
Flat sole has two pivot points that make contact with the inner curve. So I think, it makes it easier to hold in the right place. If I used the curved sole, i have to hold the angle of the tool to allow the blade to cut. And then the curved sole could skip over part because there's no positive contact. Does that make sense? 🤔
