Sometimes chemicals have to be used for invasive species with no predators and no organic treatments. This is how I am spraying the spotted lanternfly nymphs and young. Early targeted spraying.
Thanks so much for your support! Cheers & Thanks, Gary!

Hi Gary, just wanted to tell you I tried your peppermint oil/castile soap/& water spray out of desperation on Lanternfly nymphs and it worked!!! I spray it on them and try to soak them down wherever I see groups of them congregating on stems when the pollinators are not around. After Lanternfly's are sprayed they may hop around for a minute or more but after a few moments they die, sometimes flipping on their back with legs flailing. I can't stress how much I absolutely HATE doing that...to any living thing...watching the Lanternfly's suffer makes me feel very bad 😔. Most recently discovered them on my, blueberries & black raspberries, now after seeing your video I'll be checking my apple tree again. I am desperate to protect my stuff!! I also use your peppermint spray on the aphids attacking the tips of my cherry tree, etc.

I don’t have a tree of heaven, but they appeared in my garden last year. I am able to reach them, so I cup my hand around (so they can’t jump away) and scoop them into an old peanut jar filled with soapy water. They were on all my plants, but the anise hyssop especially. Do your research to see what their eggs look like and how to dispose of them. Good luck

Same problem on my grapes here in Maryla d also. I've been throwing Diotomateous Earth powder on them for the past few days and studying the effects. I've sprayed stink bugs with dish soap and water and had good results, so I'll try that next, then vinegar then Seven. Last year was the first season where I enjoyed my own grapes, but this year my excitement for 10 times the grape clusters than last year is tempered by this new peat infestation.

Update. I caught some spotted lantern fly nymphs in a container. I then opened the lid real fast and sprayed them with Dawn soap water. They stop moving within 15 seconds. On the grapevines when you spray them, they hop to their deaths soon after spraying them. The concentrated spray does damage the leaves though. Small trade off.

I'm in PA. We were told the nymphs don't really fly.. they really only jump. We were told they hatch up on branches but will eventually fall to the ground and then crawl back up the tree. So people were advised to put this green double sided tape around the trunks of trees and stalks but then to secure chicken wire (held away from the trunk/tape by sticks or wood) around the trunks. The idea being the nymphs crawl back up the trunk and get stuck on the tape but the chicken wire keeps birds, etc.. from getting stuck on the tape too. It does seem to cut down on the population. They do start to fly when they get to the middle stage of life (when they look just like the black nymphs but are fully red) and totally fly once they are adults. But the tape will get them in all stages of life.

SLF also really love peonies, maples, and fruit-bearing trees & vines. They're usually a minor nuisance on garden crops, forunately, but pose the biggest risk to the long-term investment of orchard & vineyard plants. At the ground level, I will knock nymphs into a jar of soapy water, same as for manual control of Japanese beetles. I do targeted sprays of neem oil solution where I can see them in low trees. The neem is far slower and less effective than Sevin. I just couldn't be fussed to get a spray setup together and now the local population has stabilized at a lower level. The first couple of years were attrocious, but it seems that the birds are figuring out that they're food and populations are leveling out. Also, your point about early morning timing for spraying is key. As an evening gardener, I notice the nymphs put themselves to bed in less accessible spots in early evening - around the same time the bees head home. So it's not really reasonable to catch them in evening instead of at the crack of dawn (much to my lament). All to say, this is a good complement to the information from the Penn State cooperative extension and state departments of natural resources. Thanks for a great video!

Interesting. I love the tree of heaven, hadn't known it's name until I went to a small presentation on native plants. There I learned the tree is highly invasive and undesirable because it robs nearby plants of water and maybe nutrients. Maybe the spotted lantern fly is a natural way to reduce the proliferation of this tree.
