Florence Griffith Joyner - USA - Athletics - 100m & 200m - Seoul 1988 Olympic Games
Florence Griffith Joyner's career was as brief as it was colourful. The Californian sprinter was known more for her outrageous outfits and long, painted fingernails as much as she was recognised for her sprinting achievements.
But all that stopped in 1988, when the Flo-Jo phenomenon took root amid a string of incredible performances culminating in double sprint gold at the Olympic Games in Seoul.
She was undoubtedly a sprinter of note, claiming silver in the 200m at the 1984 Games in Los Angeles and again earning the runners-up spot in the world championships in Rome three years later.
But it was in the relatively humble surrounds of the US Olympic trials in 1988 that she made her astonishing breakthrough.
In the heats of the 100m she broke the world record held by compatriot Evelyn Ashford, knocking almost three tenths off the previous mark with an unheard of time of 10.49secs.
Controversy raged over the new time as the wind reading for the race was 0.0 while the triple jump equipment registered a wind speed of 4.3 miles per second a few yards away. Yet the record stood and only Flo-Jo herself has come within touching distance of the time ever since.
Her performances in Seoul were nothing short of remarkable. She dominated a world class field in the 100m final, beating Ashford and Heike Drechsler with blistering pace.
She clocked 10.54secs in the final after establishing a two-yard lead at the halfway stage and scorching away from the field in the second half of the race.
The 200m win was even more impressive, shattering the world record in the final with a time of 21.34secs to leave Jamaica's Grace Jackson, who beat her own personal best by a large, trailing about five metres behind in silver medal position.
Griffith Joyner's records for 100m and 200m have yet to be broken. At the Games in Seoul, she ran in both relays, winning a third gold medal in the 4x100m and a silver in the 4x400m. In 1998, Griffith Joyner died in her sleep at the age of 38, the victim of a form of epileptic seizure that led her to suffocate.

Hard to believe with the advancement in performance enhancing drugs & training since Flo Jo's day, her records still haven't been broken. Leads me to believe she was the best and still is.

Advancement in PED's ? The only advances have been in non-detectable roids but not in the strength of effect. Training is not that much more advanced. Often the colleges follow the (by now old) Eastern Bloc research.

Well..its a bittersweet acknowledgement..Considering the fact that 'Steroids' is what killed her. She died of an Enlarged Heart...The Heart is the Strongest Muscle in the body..it Pumps Thousands of beats a day!...Millions in a Life time. Unlike biceps and triceps..or quads and calves that fill up with blood from multiple sets and reps, The Heart cannot work to failure! It must continue to work...Supplying Oxygenated Blood to the Brain, all the internal organs and Muscles. But just like the muscles i mentioned...the Heart grows and thickens from Steroids..and when it does, it becomes 'Musclebound' and loses its ability to do the one thing its designed for...And thats to keep you Alive! Eventually the Heart cannot Pump the Blood out...Losing the ability to contract and expand..The Heart Chambers become Flooded...and the Heart Seizes...Drowning in its own Blood...Causing Death
@brandongreen4880
@brandongreen4880 10 лет назад
I have heard that this is a possible consequence of steroid usage (enlarged heart). Years ago throwing coaches from the Eastern Bloc would recommend aerobic work to counter balance all the negative side effects(thickening of the heart musculature) that would occur with exclusively strength and power work.

The only way we can find out is if we let all the athletes dope to their teeth and chase her records. Because doping is not as prevalent as it used to be back in the days because of the stricter tests. I also can't see athletes like Allyson Felix doping which puts them at a disadvantage.

@TheRetroWoman80 8 лет назад
Who really knows, King Eric. But Flo-Jo had been professionally running long before that. She got nice finishes in previous world championships, received silver medals in '84 but maybe in 1988 she finally had reached the pinnacle she was training for all those years. She was also ready to settle down and start a family as she had Mary Ruth shortly after her retirement. Though running was always her passion, I believe she had many other interests that made her happy as well.

You have a lot of nonsense in your mind. Men and women have both gotten faster over time. You seem to think that because the increments are staggered between the genders, that one is the result of doping and the other is not. That is complete nonsense as a method of logic. You also seem to think that your opinion is truth. That's confirmation bias doing a number on you. You've completely constructed a reality. How weird, and how weak.

FloJo's husband set the record straight long ago. They purchased a $150 leg lift machine and she worked out on that thing darn-near all day long. She trained non-stop, etc. Also, what many are not aware of is not only did she past numerous drug tests while she was alive, but after she died, they ripped her body apart testing for all types of doping imaginable and found absolutely nothing. She was thoroughly tested alive and after she passed, and found to be innocent. Ok, let's just say she was doping...um, Marion Jones, childhood prodigy who was always expected to be Gold Medalist doped and didn't come close. There was CLEARLY something in FloJo's training that got her where she was no matter what anyone says.
@absoleet
@absoleet 8 лет назад
+stevie586 She was never tested for steroids in her autopsy. The coroner found her bladder had too little urine for drug testing. The story that her body was "ripped apart for steroids" is nothing but a myth created by apologists. And she had no reason to be taking steroids after retiring from athletics before she died anyway. The quick change in her appearance like her deeper voice, increased musculature and sprinting performance makes her a suspect for doping. And drug testing during her time is nothing like what it is now. There was no unannounced random out of season testing in the 80s so athletes could cycle steroid use before any event with drug testing. No test for growth hormone existed back then either. Lance Armstrong showed how the testing system could be beat by careful planning and bribery. The leg lift machine story is so ridiculous as if she was the first track and field female athlete to ever train with weights. The reasonable explanation for her success is that she trained hard and also cycled steroids.

Extract from "Drugs: The curse of Flo-Jo " Her times, however, were not all that had changed. Her physique had altered beyond recognition. When Pat Butcher, a British athletics writer, first met her in 1985, he described her ``as one of the most beautiful women I had ever seen, petite, oval- faced with unblemished skin'' By 1988, the same woman had bulging muscles, huge veins and thick make-up to hide her acne, a known side-effect of taking steroids. According to Butcher, she had ``metamorphosed'': her voice had deepened and her jaw elongated, a condition known to be an effect of Human Growth Hormone (HGH) - a banned drug. Flo-Jo explained her rapid improvement on everything from her new diet of water, vitamins, fish and chicken to doing up to 5,000 sit-ups a day. Her husband has always denied that this was the result of drugs. A woman on a large dosage of HGH and Steroids is either a man with a vagina or a woman with balls..

Kerry Pal OK now that I have the British sports writer's opinion how about a qualified professional's opinion? The physical change was so great yet the people with the most credibility aren't interviewed? Where are the doctor's statements? Next you'll be telling me that one of the hurdle setup assistants agrees that she was using, that she was using the strongest PEDs available, that no one else was using and/or no one else was using the same kinds of PEDs and in the same amounts as Flo-Jo. I'm sorry this is getting ridiculous. I do get it. You and many others strongly believe she was cheating but you do understand that it's a belief, as in faith, right?

Jesse Locke The comment may be very crude. But the fact is that there were 12 US track and field athletes in Seoul that tested positive, and the IOC accepted money for the cover up. And that wouldn't be the first time they helped the US , the LA cover up was pretty shady. Beyond that, Florence had to cut her European tour short, because after the first race; she was booed off the track - because the ever knowledgable European track fans knew she was on drugs. Her coach Bob Keerse is well known in track circles for being a drug advocator, and he trade information with Charlie Francis. There was no one who follow track and field, or knew the sport - that believed she wasn't on drugs. Why do you think she retired, people say because of the new random drug testing. But in reality, she should have been a superstar in the US after the games, but because of the wide spread opinion of her being on drugs; her endorsements just didn't happen, no one would touch her. That speaks volumes.

Jesse Locke You will never be convinced that you sprint queen was a cheat. There is steroid use and there is excessive steroids use. Ben Johnson's eyes turned yellow due to his excessive use. His liver was under severe stress. Answer the following question. If Flo Jo and her coach had developed a training and nutrition program that was capable of transforming an average 28YO female sprinter to superwoman, why are there no details about the program? Such a program would be worth millions. This is America the center of Capitalism. Such a program would be patented and marketed its potential to generate enormous profits. Flo Jo retired and with her retirement went the wonder program that transformed her. Her coach who partnered in the development of the program has not seen it fit to share said program with American athletes. How unpatriotic considering the Jamaican a beating the American sprinter like relented mules. The questions you are asking are irrelevant. The question above is one that needs to be answered and I will never be as there was not wonder program. Mr. Joyner and his wife have disgraced USA Track & Field just as Mr. Armstrong has disgraced American Cycling. As a fellow African American I can say to Mr. Joyner, he is man without honor and disgrace to the black community.

Flo Jo is probably the biggest fake in track and field history. During a 3-month span between the 1988 US Trials and the Seoul Olympics she transformed herself overnight from a skinny decent sprinter at the 1984 LA games into a sensational super athlete in '88, beating women sprinters previously better than her by almost 10 meters while demolishing the 100m & 200m world records by over 30 hundreds of a second before mysteriously disappearing from the track scene after dope testing procedures were upgraded from urine to blood samples... Along with Carl Lewis who also failed 3 (yes, 3) PED tests that same year but was allowed to compete at the Olympics and eventually awarded the gold medal after Ben Johnson was disqualified for failing a drug test, it's easy to see how corrupt the US track and field body (USATF) is...... Shame!!!!!

@kerrypal3387
@kerrypal3387 9 лет назад
The author Parrish Gore Marion Jones never failed a drug screen. "What evidence do you have that supports your theory that Flo Jo cheated?" There is sufficient circumstantial evidence to support the claims that she was drug cheat. When her physique change drastically i.e., bulging muscles and elongated jaw line she stated she changed her diet and her new coach who was her husband stated he trained her like a man. Flo Jo and her husband discovered a nutrition and training program that transformed a average 28YO sprinter into a world beater. No details of the miraculous nutrition and training program were ever made available to the Track & Field world. This program could have made millions for Flo Jo and her husband. Al Joyner her husband should be a top sprint and conditioning coach in America. After all he coached the fastest woman ever. Flo Jo never detailed the miraculous nutrition and training program that transformed her in any book despite writing several for kids. It is a nutrition and training program that will never be duplicated as it never existed. Both Al and Flo Jo remain a disgrace to Track & Field.
@theauthorparrishgore591

Kerry Pal In 2006 Marion Jones tested positive for EPO (Erythropoietin). It was her "A" sample which tested positive. She withdrew from the Meet (Weltklasse Golden League in Switzerland) citing "personal reason". Officially her "B" sample would need to test positive in order for her to receive punishment for banned substances. But, apparently, her "B" sample came back negative. So, officially her test was considered negative even though her "A" sample was positive for EPO. So, she did fail a drug test, only it wasn't considered an official fail. As for Flo Jo's physical changes, every athlete who lifts weights will gain muscle and improved physical abilities. This doesn't prove anything. If you really want to point a finger at someone, try Bolt. His destruction of the 100 meter record is beyond the normal progression.
@kerrypal3387
@kerrypal3387 9 лет назад
The author Parrish Gore You are correct. However, if the B sample is of any significance, then she was cleared and consequently there are no positive test on her record. Flo Jo: Lifting weights will result in the enlargement of muscles. However, it does not contribute to the changing of the voice,elongation of jaw lines and acne. At your convenience view the RU-vid video containing an interview with Kellie White a Balco progeny. She details the changes in her body and voice underwent and the severe acne she developed. Bolt: I am a Jamaican and can address the Bolt suspensions. Bolt was expected to be a world class athlete over 200M based on the record times he was recording as teenager. He captured the attention of the athletics world when he defeated older athletes as 16YO in the Junior World Championship. He lost his way when he became a senior and did get serious until he secured the services of world class sprint coach Glenn Mills. He was a 200M specialist and that is the in which he was expected to great things. After his defeat by Tyson Gay in the 2007 WC, His coach realized he was not fast enough to be a winner at that level unless Tyson Gay suddenly drop dead. He decided to use 100M sprints to improve his sped and 400M back ground work to carry said speed. Tyson Gay was a 100M & 200M performer. During 100M training session and as a raw 100M runner with a best time of 10.03, he recorded time below 10 seconds. This was done without the application of the core techniques required for the 100M discipline. His drives was bad, When he came out of his drive phase he rocked badly because of his height. The only thing good was his speed endurance. Despite his flaws he was still running sub-ten for the distance. His coached worked with his to clean up his technique and the rest is history. Both ability,speed and stride lengths allows his to do things average athletes cannot. No athlete on PED declares they want to be a 'LEGEND' and goes out and do it. Steroid have serious side effect and just a quickly as they build the body is just as quickly as they it down. Jamaica has a rich history of producing world class athletes. The only athletes that have held the 100M & 200M WR at the same time have been Jamaicans i.e., Donald Quarrie and Usain Bolt.. The only athlete in history to have the world leading times for 100M, 200M & 400M in a single year has been a Jamaican i.e., Herby McKinley. Bolt is not drug induced athlete. If he uses PED he would be a national disgrace and could not call Jamaica his home anymore. He exhibited greatness as a child and is no blot from the blue.

After her death in 1998, Prince Alexandre de Merode, the Chairman of the International Olympic Committee's medical commission, claimed that Joyner was singled out for extra, rigorous drug testing during the 1988 Olympic Games because of rumors of steroid use. De Merode told The New York Times that Manfred Donike, who was at that time considered to be the foremost expert on drugs and sports, failed to discover any banned substances during that testing.[19] De Merode later said: "We performed all possible and imaginable analyses on her. We never found anything. There should not be the slightest suspicion."[20]

That's because oral steroids clear your body in 1 to for weeks and injectable steroids clear your body in 3 to 4 months. This is by todays testing methods. So back in 1988 as long as you stopped taking them in time, you wouldn't get detected. Also is it a coincidence that Flo Jo retired when out of season testing was introduced for the first time January 1st 1989??

I loved FLO JO back in the day, but back then, I was REAL heavy into track and field. I followed these world class sprinters CLOSELY. I remember back when she was definitely a world class sprinter, but she used to get dominated by Evelyn Ashford ... she had a slim, sexy track physique. All of a sudden, within a year she has these huge muscles in her legs and her sprint times are going through the roof! NOW she's dominating Evelyn Ashford after chasing her all those years. Plus, the records she set aren't even close to being touched by women today .... women who are stronger and more athletic than women from 25 years ago. She was never caught, and I hate to admit it, but it was obvious she was taking steroids .... a lot of people are STILL in denial about that!

Usain Bolt, regardless of whether they find anything in his system, Mo Farah, Jonathan Edwards, Michael Johnson - regardless if they had or hadn't - were exceptional. Because not only did they beat other cheats but also, technique and talent are unquestionable. Flo Jo's sprint technique was near flawless. And considering she had considerably less muscle mass than Dafne Schippers, Veronica Campbell Brown and other more modern sprinters, she produced unfathomed power, speed with beautifully effortless grace

I wouldn't say most sprinters, I'd say most athletes. But as for athletes today being stronger than athletes of previous years, general strength training methods haven't really changed much at all, and I've trained alongside many of the top medal performers in the UK at Loughborough Uni. Diets from years gone by have marginally changed, the use of plyos, weight training and conditioning are the same, even biomechanical improvements have been marginal. The low heel recovery Flo Jo and Ben Johnson used are what top sprinters of today also use, although I'd say today's sprinters have perfected the drive phase as most sprinters pre mid 90's seemed to have a much more brief/ non existent drive phase.

I have watched track and field athletics since the 1960's and I have to be honest and tell you that Flo Jo's records and victories are not clean ones. The margins of her victories were simply too great. Not only that, but I saw her performances take a quantum leap in a very short period of time. If you want to know who the best U.S. sprinter was, it was Evelyn Ashford. She was always clean and she beat a lot of runners who were dirty. For this reason alone, I admire her more than anyone. Oh, and in case you don't believe me, just listen to Flo Jo's voice. It is a dead giveaway. As for the men, the only clean sprinter ( 100 or 200 ) I know of during that time was Calvin Smith. Smith may have been the fastest man who ever lived.

Come on. What's with all the slurping of Flo Jo? She was obviously a massive performance enhancing drug user. Up until the time she was 26 years old, she was just another ok sprinter on the USA team. Then, in one year leading up to the 88 Olympics, she suddenly drops her best 100m time by a full half second, and goes on to set records that still stand. No one improves that much, that quickly, especially someone in her late twenties. Then she abruptly retires immediately after the 88 Olympics, just as new enhanced drug tests are being put in place. Later, she goes on to suddenly die in her sleep at the age of 38. Anyone with an IQ over 80 can figure this one out.

The allegations of drug use were never proven. The ones who said that she had used drugs had done so because she had more muscle mass then before and her times improved. These changes were do to a change in her diet and workout regimen. When they tested her in 1988 there was nothing in her system.

However, she underwent such a dramatic change in physique In just a matter of 1 year. Although it has never been proven, its obvious to many people that she had to of been involved with the use of drugs

Hundreds of US athletes (and probably thousands internationally) failed their drugs tests in these Olympics. Many failed in Beijing '08 and London '12. If anyone thinks ANY of these athletes are clean they really need to get with Reality. The big stars have been allowed to get away with it to keep the sport alive

He did confess to it. Carl Lewis has also admit he failed all his drug tests. Lewis said he was only one of hundreds of US athletes who failed drugs tests and was allowed to compete anyways

The power of steroids!
@iRzns

Joyce Williams you must not understand steroids or track and field. Vertical Power into the ground is what helps you run faster. Steroids can increase this. If she took steroids her form would still be the same, just astronomical amounts of power in each step. She’d also fatigue less than a non-doped sprinter if she was on roids, which would allow her to decelerate slower than the competition.

WOW! FLO-JO WAS AMAZING!!! RIP Sister, we miss you!!! Evelyn Ashford was also one of the Greatest.

Yes, many people forget about Evelyn. Remember how Flo-Jo nearly cost the US the gold in the 4X100 at Seoul with that sloppy hand-off? But that "other gear" that Evelyn kicked into in the last 100 meters was what made that gold possible.
