Hands down one of the best spy films ever made.
The Spy Who Came in from the Cold is a 1965 British Cold War spy film directed by Martin Ritt and starring Richard Burton, Claire Bloom, and Oskar Werner.
Based on the 1963 novel of the same name by John le Carré, the film is about a British agent who is sent to East Germany in order to sow disinformation about a powerful East German intelligence officer. With the aid of his unwitting English girlfriend, an idealistic communist, he allows himself to be recruited by the communists, but soon his charade unravels and he admits to being a British agent-a revelation that achieves the ultimate objective of the mission.

The success of this movie comes from its staying close to the book, the spy story to end all spy stories.

Richard Burton, lost too soon. Nowadays, only we oldies remember the raw talent of this great actor. Too much time is spent ruminating on his notorious love affairs, drinking and of course marriage to the late Liz Taylor. In reality he was a quite brilliant actor with an unforgettable rich voice. Alex Leamas is one of his finest performances , he captured the dreary mood of Berlin in a world totally different from now. Here are some others that I rather like also “The Wild Geese”, with his friend Richard Harris; he plays a major leading a team of mercenaries in Africa.HE was due to make Wild Geese II, but died before it started. The action film “ Where Eagles Day” once again a. military man and then also Taming of the Shrew, “1984” and many more. He was in his late fifties when he died in Aug 1984. of a brain haemorrhage in hospital. It is said he consumed three bottles of vodka a day, and smoked up to five packets of fags. What a damn fool!

It may sound weird, but I picked up a copy of the book in the seventies, at some garage sale, and it's been in my collection all along...but I don't think I got around to reading it. I saw the film on TV sometime in the seventies and enjoyed it, but when Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy came along, I never connected the two...it was only when looking up a list of the George Smiley books that I realized le Carre wrote this one. I've picked them all up, plus a few more or his books, and will hopefully get around to reading them all before I die. I did start to watch this film earlier tonight, but I need something a little more cheerful at the moment.

your video really highlights some great acting and direction... you know, the new Le Carre book ties together his masterpieces The Spy Who Came out of the Cold with the even more brilliant Tinker Tailor Solider Spy trilogy... this latest book combines all 4 novels and becomes the final chapter in what is now a 5-novel epic featuring George Smiley (one of the best fictional creations, up there with Sherlock Holmes in my opinion)....

That I agree with! 👌👌👌👌My Late Father kept on telling me about this movie.He saw it in England when he was studying there in the late 50s early 60s! I read the novel while in college but I saw the movie years later! It's just cinematic brilliance! 👌So simple yet so luxurious. A world that did exist and at the highest authorities of Office! A totally different genre of filmaking. And no one better than Burton to play this role. This was perhaps his finest moment in front of the camera. 🙏Huge fan from India 🇮🇳

But Bridge of Spies borrowed that scene from THIS movie, not the other way around. The excellent BBC series "Smiley's People" (with Alec Guinness as Smiley) also borrowed it. And why not? This is the best scene in a classic movie.

I finished the audiobook i thought this was a good film, but can get to hard to understand whats happening since its just drama and alot of real spy craft stuff, but what i got from it, is basically something happens someone is a defector, one agent is not getting paid, at the end, i guess maybe he was its an open and ended answer, but i like spy stuff and listening or reading all of john le carre RIP, he is a writer that can talk about the real aspects and not the fantasy we are grown to seeing i really liked, it i would love a modern take with nolan directing and di caprio being the lead or somethin.
@kenoliver8913
@kenoliver8913 Год назад
It is a deliberately complex plot (as all Le Carre's were). The whole point is that you don't find out what Leamis' mission actually was about until the end, and only then does the plot make sense. If you are not paying attention in the movie it is easy to miss it.
