This is definitely top 5 of the best King adaptations. Even though there is a lot of stuff left out from the book the spirit of the novel is here. It was a huge event miniseries when it came out. Everyone was glued to their TVs. This version is absolutely superior to the CBS miniseries that just came out. M-O-O-N spells awesome!

As far as adaptations go I always thought it was pretty decent. Sure a character from one place ends up in another place, and maybe a character or two are combined into one, but for the most part, the story is intact.

I like that this miniseries has actors that were in other King adaptions. Gary Sinese was in Green Mile. The gate guy was in Needful Things. Ed Harris played the main protagonist in Needful Things. The doctor that treats Rob Lowe was in Sliver Bullet. Rob Lowe is in the remake of Salem's Lot. Kathy Bates is in Misery and Dolores Clairborne. It feels like it is connected to other King adaptions by having these other actors in the series.

The Stand was 800+ pages when it was released and was later released as an unabridged version at 1100+ pages. The BIGGEST criticism of the 1994 The Stand miniseries was all of the things that had to be excised to fit into two 2 hour movies. Fans of The Stand hoped that the 2020 miniseries would rectify a lot of that in its 10 hour run time. Unfortunately, it was not only a bad show but they also didn't show as much cut book content in their extra 6 hours. The miniseries did an excellent of job of casting the right actors for their roles, for the most part. I personally think that Kareem Abdul-Jabaar as "The Monster Shouter" was probably the second best cast role in the show after a character yet to be seen.

I read the unabridged version of The Stand when I was a teenager but, due to circumstances beyond my control, didn’t get the chance to see the miniseries when it aired. Years later, around 1999, I was housesitting with a friend. The homeowner told her to help herself to the food and the TV. We were looking through the VHS collection to find something to watch when lo and behold, I came upon a bunch of (also recorded from the TV, haha) tapes of the miniseries. I was ECSTATIC! Felt like I’d found a hidden treasure or unicorn or something. 😂 I watched the series and ate up every minute. So, just in case there’s confusion, because the crow appeared right outside the lab that the virus escaped from just before it did, so some people think the Dark Man may have somehow caused the outbreak. He didn’t. The superflu breaking out was a total coincidence. This series doesn’t explain his origins or anything, so I’m not spoiling by saying this, but the Dark Man is just a traveler who causes mischief and misery for fun. In Stephen King’s mythology, he travels between dimensions and Earths from alternate universes causing riots and assassinations and things like that because he likes messing with people and sowing chaos. In this particular story, he just so happened to have crossed over to this version of Earth and started looking around for trouble to cause, and wouldn’t you know it, the superflu broke free. He’s just watching the world fall apart and loving it, like watching a comedy on tv. He’s thinking that this is perfect; no need to cause mere trouble, this world has already caused itself the maximum amount of harm. Instead, he’s gonna throw a big ol’ party with what’s left of the human race. It’s a case of two different evils, not set against each other, but working in tandem by pure coincidence: mad science on one side with the superflu, and the supernatural on the other side, with the Antichrist-like figure of the Dark Man. That’s part of why so many people love The Stand the most out of all of King’s stories, because it gives two different, terrifying problems, one that could actually happen, and one that we hope is just a fairytale. And they happen back to back to these poor characters!
@LordLOC
@LordLOC 2 года назад
Dunno if you saw the 2020 remake of this but in that one they literally show the Dark Man/Randall Flagg causing the outbreak to occur lol and it's been decades since I read the novel, so I don't remember if it's actually mentioned or not whether Flagg causes the original outbreak or not. I don't think so but I can't be sure.
@TeenTyrant
@TeenTyrant 2 года назад
No, I haven’t seen the 2020 remake, I’m talking specifically about this one. In the novel, the Dark Man isn’t even introduced until somewhere between chapter 17 and 23 (can’t remember which one it is but it’s between those two), long after the plague events have got underway, and he didn’t even know that the superflu was out there yet, so he was definitely not involved in the book.
@LordLOC
@LordLOC 2 года назад
@@TeenTyrant Yeah I figured he wasn't involved it's just been like 30 years since I read it last lol Still not sure why they made the Dark Man basically responsible for the outbreak in the remake - seems like a really odd change considering. Then again I've seen people defend it saying he was just "helping things along" that humanity already created the virus and he just did his thing.

I would imagine the Blu-Ray version has the same director/actor commentary available as on the DVD, and it's an interesting listen. Rob Lowe is on it saying that "The Stand" was his favorite book and he was willing to do whatever it took to play Nick Andros. Miguel Ferrer talks about how "The Stand" was his favorite book and he was willing to do whatever it took to play Randall Flagg (what he said he told his agent is "who do I have to blow to play Randall Flagg.") I never loved this adaptation - but it’s much better then the reboot. In the reboot they tried to scramble the chapters in order to “update” the storytelling style - but the novel is written in order of events. It just doesn’t work and actually by spreading the fast moving plague out from beginning to end it lessens the impact of a virus taking out 98% of the population in a few short weeks. So while CGI crows might do tricks on command better - I prefer actual birds and scripts that haven’t been in a blender.

In the book, Ray Flowers (radio DJ) was a male. But Kathy was so beloved after her role in King's "Misery" that the role was made female for her. IMDB says this about it Kathy Bates: As Rae Flowers (uncredited), a radio DJ. In the book, this character was male. After our Covid hit, there were many remarks about it resembling the "super-flu or Captain Trips" to the point that King replied on one of the social platforms about it is similar but the real-life not being "Captain Trips." Some troll said something like, "How would you know." and man he was literally trolling the AUTHOR of the novel. so yeah, he would know a bit about "The Stand." It is similar to real-life because King often researches with trusted doctor sources about things for books that need real expertise. Like one particular source, he asked how long a person could live if they had to cut off their own body parts to eat if stranded with literally no food source. He used this in a short story. One I read as a tee, ONCE, And I am one of those weird people who LOVE to reread books many, MANY times. But once was enough for that story.

Some of King's novels are difficult to translate to screen (big or little), but I'm still hoping we get: __ The Dark Tower done properly this time __ The IT prequel. I heard there was talk about getting Skarsgard and doing a prequel to IT __ The Long Walk. Yeesh __ Eyes of the Dragon would be amazing. He's got great fantasy works that never get adapted __ Rage would be interesting, but I see why King doesn't want that story to see the light of day anymore King is getting older. It's time for a brave studio or network to start doing his opus so we can live to see it all tied together

I read both IT and The Stand as a 5th grader in the early 90s during our class's designated reading time. I can't imagine what the teacher had to have been thinking seeing a kid bringing out 1100 page books for reading time, lol.

Words CANNOT express how happy this made me! I love this miniseries. I was 10 when it originally aired and mynparents were cool enough to tape it from television so I watched it over and over as a kid. It inspired me to read the unabridged version of the book. Since Stephen King wrote the screenplay for it as well it is very faithful to the book. Can't. Wait!

I cannot listen to "Don't fear the reaper" without thinking of this shot through the lab in the beginning. I think reading the book first would have been a better idea, but we will flow with this. I saw part of the 2020 re-adaptation, and I just couldn't get into that series. 7:00 is Ed Harris. He played Gene in Apollo 13 and is amazing actor.

This is my all-time favorite book and my favorite Stephen King novel thus far; I have hardcover editions of the original 1978 release and the 1990 expanded and updated version. I was 16 the first time I read the book(1987) and I was thrilled when I first heard about the miniseries adaptation. My favorite characters from both the book and the miniseries are Stu and Nick. And I loved Jamey Sheridan's portrayal of Randall Flagg(The Dark Man; also referred to as The Walkin' Dude in the book) and the late Ruby Dee as Mother Abigail.
