I think also worth mentioning is Steve also mentioned that to be proportion that the arms, kneck & calves should all be the same circumference as a balance and the waist should be at least 12 inches smaller than the chest for an overall classic type structure regardless of weight.

That's why swimmers have huge backs, the V taper. Shoulders, wide clavicles, the length of the bones, add some muscles on that and you look amazing

@@garrettchristensen8074 I've been researching steroids since before you were hatched. I've spent decades as an AAU bodybuilder / lifter / record holder, and author. If you weren't a dilletante you'd understand that Reeves retired after winning the 1950 NABBA Mr. Universe, 8 years BEFORE Ciba's Dianabol was invented in 1958 so he could not have been on gear. Earlier existing available testosterone was crap, and though tried by some, it failed to produce any bodybuilding champions.

I think the proper term is "proportion", meaning ratios or one measurement in relation to others. Whereas "symmetry" would just mean a balance between the left and right sides.

"Symmetry" has become an overused term in the context of the assessment of an aesthetic physique. The correct term is "Proportion". Symmetry refers to the degree of matching between identical objects on either side of a "centreline of symmetry". As such, it should be applied to LEFT/RIGHT assessments. For example, if a bodybuilder has an injury such as a bicep tear or pec tear, there could be a radical compromise to the degree of LEFT/RIGHT symmetry. Or, a bodybuilder could have genetic anomalies with regards to LEFT/RIGHT symmetry. But if we are talking about the balance between the relative of size of different muscle groups distributed around the body, "Proportion" is the correct term.

I like the fact that you highlight these are just guidelines and individual differences should be taken into account. I think the picture of Grimek highlights this well. I can relate to him because he definitely didn't have a V Taper, however he still looked good in my opinion. For stockier people I think that sort of bear mode physique typically works the best.

Been a rabid bodybuilding / lifting competitor, trainer, author for a whole lifetime As such I'd remark that your site is superb. But to take the measurements to 3 digits is going nowhere. It serves no purpose, and worse, tries to shoehorn the 'ideal physique' into a tight box that bears little relation to our sport. However the numbers do seem about correct. 'Symmetry' is really the wrong term. As a biologist you will know that symmetry refers to left or right symmetry... front or back symmetry. What people really are talking about is proportion which is simple. It is just the proper size of one muscle group to another. For example the neck. the biceps and the calves should all be the same size 16 inches or 17 in. JCG said that many years ago I hope that clears up symmetry versus proportion! Finally, JCG suggested also that the waist and thigh should be about the same... which in his case was 27 inches.

Also don't forget that these guys are NO WHERE NEAR as lean as the bodybuilders or standards today. Hence why they could carry way more mass than most naturals bb today. If anything I think they look far better than any natural bodybuilder today because most of them get way too lean and become skin and bones with some muscle definition.
