The boys are back for another (perhaps) unexpected but VERY interesting case: The Stanford Prison Experiment.
The Stanford Prison Experiment, conducted by psychologist Dr Philip Zimbardo in 1971, is shrouded in horrific controversies that continue to disturb its participants to date. Intended to examine the psychological effects of perceived power, the experiment involved college students assigned to play roles as guards and prisoners in a simulated prison environment.

Saving this to watch tomorrow. The dr behind this was a quack. I met him once at a lecture he was giving when i was in hs. I was writing a paper on this experiment. I went to ask him some questions after. Dont remember what i asked, but he just goes "ive also done studies on shyness" and hugs me. At 16, it was pretty weird, but i respected him so... however, now im in my 30s and i lost respect for for him. The hug and his remark were just creepy. I still cringe whenever i see his name.

I teach this and the Milgram study (among other dark research to come out of that era of psychology) to my students. They are always shocked to hear about it in depth and what the human mind is capable of doing. You all did fantastic covering it!

Something to slightly lighten the mood because yes its a dark subject Richard Osmon is fascinated with the Stanford prison experiment, He actually used the idea of give someone a role and make people believe something and they will adapt to that role when he created that joke tv show "space cadets" a few years back.

This one and the Milgram experiment are two of the cases I remember most from doing Psychology at A level a million years ago. Both very interesting (one of the other cases I remember the most was the murder of Kitty Genovese and the bystander effect)

Yes the study was flawed on so many levels. But similar things have happened in real life, such as the Abu Ghraib scandal. I think there is some merit in the research but it is more a study on the effects of dehumanisation than everyday practices in a standard prison.

I went to his lecture on this very subject at my local uni. It was very interesting, but less so in retrospect.

Summa cum laude isn't that amazing. You just need above a 3.6 average. And your dean signs your certificate. Totally worth the sleepless nights, Ramen diet, and 250kish

Finally watching, but: you def hit the nail on the head when you talk about base criticism of the experiment. He purposefully chose a very narrow group of young white males. He chose who was in which group, not randomized. He told the subjects what the study was about. These are just some of the few. Overall, the study was tainted from the beginning. "We wanted to create a sense of power" automatically negates the study. Dr. Z "muddied the minds," which you perfectly put.

This is to me is terrifying, thinking about what 'normal people' would do in situations. Think you've already covered it but the John Mooney study is sickening.

Listened to this in the car on a long drive, very detailed and made a couple of laughs. However one thing for the constructive criticism the editing memes while the story is being laid out is so jarring and unnecessary
