Hey guys! I know, this video is a bit different from the content that I normally create... but I felt really inspired to share my observations. What did you think about this trend?
Oh lord! This is a whole new level. Over the years, living in Mexico I've seen Americans go wild for iPhones, sneakers, Black Friday sales... however I never imagined it would escalate this much for a cup that leaks if you tilt it! It's really something else. Marketers must be very proud.
@@channahnoyb4803 I think it's pretty clear on the video that this marketing strategy is targeted to young people and middle class women. I am sure that there are people who are mature and intelligent enough not to go out and spend 40 bucks on a cup that spills if you tilt it 🙄. But that's the thing that I think you missed from the video: these trends are targeted and affect young people too much.
The Stanley cup craze also shows how wasteful people are. It's supposed to be a reusable product to reduce waste, but somehow people collecting them and ultimately throwing them away when it's not cool anymore causes way more waste
Good point! It’s really contradictory that people are collecting so many, considering it’s a product that’s meant to be reused… it’s a shame that most of these trends just end up in the dump polluting even more 😢
AMEN. This video is so true! I used to get bullied as a kid in school because most of my clothes were second hand or from stores like Value Village, Goodwill, etc. and now it's "cool" to thrift your clothes so long as it's not out of necessity or being poor....
Wow that's a good point! I remember people talking badly about second hand clothes, now it's "trendy" to thrift... some thrift shops in Seattle are more expensive than new clothes from the store lol
Agree completely with pretty much everything you said. As an American who's been in Europe since 2018, I didn't have a clue what that Stanley cup craze was all about although I'd heard about it. Now that I know ... wow. Not surprised at all since I know what American culture is like, but, still ... wow.
I was shocked when I first heard about it! It’s such a trivial thing, but it made a lot of noise in American media… no wonder the US is in the state it’s in 😅
I got one as a gift a few years ago. I don’t need more than one. I feel like the poor and middle class need something to collect and it’s the Stanley right now.
When I was a kid I got bullied for everything from having freckles, to what I brought in my lunch box, to not shaving my legs (I was 9...) And no matter what I did, I couldn't keep up with trends and my parents refused to buy brand name stuff. I can't imagine how bad the bullying must be now with social media making trends come and go even faster. :/
Hi! I'm sorry to hear that you were bullied for those trivial things... kids can be really cruel, which is why social media can be really dangerous for them. I just hope that adults start becoming more aware and paying attention to what kids consume online :(
No one I know went out and bought one. This country is huge and these types of things usually happen in certain areas and get reported by the media in a way that creates a certain narrative while the majority of us are not even on the bandwagon. You kind of help that bandwagon along by the your lack of understanding the diversity of this country. This is exactly how people from certain areas of Europe think about the US too. They believe the narrative the media, politicians, and influencers put out out without know anything about the rest of the country. So, congrats. You’re one of them now.
Hell I live in america and I didn't even know this was a craze until I saw those people fighting over the cups at Target. It's a container for water..and yet people have over 50 cups of the same brand, just different colors. Whyyyyyyyy???? This is just aggressive consureism over something that I guarantee you by the end of the year will be just another passing trend and a slew of these cups will be either sitting on Facebook Marketplace or dropped off at your local thrift shop... then these are the same people that will post GoFundMe pages because they can't pay their bills.. It's so stupid...and I agree with you about these stereotypes that people from around the world have about Americans while it may be offensive and disrespectful there still is a kernel of truth....
Absolutely! I think this whole “keeping up with the Joneses,” having to be better than everyone else, is what drives people to want the same cup in 50 colors 😅 also people are just bored, like get a hobby, don’t collect oversized and overpriced water bottles…
I agree, growing up in France, we would be made fun of for having clothes bought in the market (I know those don’t exist in America, but it’s essentially cheap clothes made in China) however, we also don’t buy luxury products UNLESS they ARE already rich. We don’t buy as much useless shit and are more frugal with our money. But I will say, since American cities and country sides are not safe for kids to have their independent life outside the house, it’s much easier for those kids to be stuck at home with nothing else to do but scroll and buy into the excessive consumerism. Like growing up in France, I would literally be out all the time, my mom wouldn’t even know where I was, as long as I came home before sunset she wouldn’t worry. But here in America you can’t do that. It’s really sad... PS: so sorry about the extremely long paragraph.
@@zayamoutou2617 this is a really good insight! I think Americans tend to spend more time inside without such a rich social life, so the consumer culture is really present in daily life. Different lifestyles. Thanks for sharing your experiences!
You, as an American, should know not to think that viral videos do not reflect the reality of the majority of people. Europe has plenty of its own problems as well. The whole western world is in decline.
It's TikTok. It's also consuming other countries so this is why I'm not chalking this up to simply an American phenomenon. This happened with Tretinoin (you alluded to this in the video) and Gua sha as well. Something about TikTok's algorithm is incredibly dangerous. This is why you see this behavior in the Caribbean (granted in small doses), England and Canada (particularly in the metropolitan areas). Even hand gestures and mannerisms you see in TikTok videos are copied by young women I see in the wild. It's scary.
Absolutely! I had that doubt whether this happens in other countries as well, I talked about it with Spanish friends and they said it'd never happen here. However, I know that this was totally impulsed by social media (especially tiktok). It's an extremely powerful tool, however it can be dangerous if consumed mindlessly. That's why I'm worried for Gen Z...
Can you make a RU-vid video talking about why you chose to leave the USA ? 🇺🇸 Can you talk about whether you prefer living in Europe or the USA and why ? Can you talk about the culture differences between the USA and Europe ? Can you talk about why you chose to live in Spain instead of any other country in Europe ? I’m thinking about leaving the USA as well ! I’m thinking about going to Europe . I think your videos could help me out . What was the Process for you like moving to Europe ? The USA has a terrible work life balance. The cost of living is insane and we don’t have universal healthcare like Europe . And the modern western women . Oh boy don’t even get me started ! I think I’ll find my wife over seas ! I need a traditional women .
On another note, many third-world countries are sadly adopting this western mentality and we see the same effects on poor countries in many different ways. It's sad to see kids who have nothing but they do have a phone and are addicted to watching tik toks and consuming unhealthy foods and products :(
I am concerned about whether or not the US goes into default in Jan. 2025. The election of 2024 is of great concern. Rising prices of prescription drug coverage concerns me. The high cost of rent is an issue. Deciding whether I should have dental work done or start saving for another car is a concern. The Stanley Cup trend is not even on my radar.
