Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines in the stream:
'Tis the star-spangled banner! Oh long may it wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!
And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion,
A home and a country should leave us no more!
Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps' pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!
Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the war's desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heav'n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: "In God is our trust."
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

What a fantastic arrangement and performance. As for the lyrics, just compare them with the anthem of our foe at the time of Francis Scott Key's writing. Englands "God Save Our King (Queen)" celebrates a monarch, rich and powerfull, and lording his power and position over his citizens. Our beloved anthem celebrates the freedom of free people, and the price that they are willing to pay to gain and maintain that freedom. It honors those who deserve to be honored, those who have given their time, their bodies and ultimately their very lives to purchase that most coveted and sacred of the rights of humans the world over - the right to live in freedom. In this age of "I'll do it my way" the Star Spangled Banner remindes us that we all must stand against the tyranny of the individual who lacks consideration for their fellow man, and that only by following the example of those Patriots who have gone before us, only by coming together as one people will we obtain what we seek - "Liberty and justice for all."

And just to clear things up, “hirelings and slaves” was a common insulting phrase of the time that could be used against anyone, including ENEMY TROOPS, corrupt politicians, or really anyone. It had nothing to do with actual slaves.

Well said. As a daughter of a WW2 Veteran, sister of a USMC Vietnam Veteran, wife of an Army Vietnam Veteran, niece of many Uncles and ALL my Ancestral background of family members serving our great country in every war since the very beginning. I am an extremely proud American and proud of every man/woman who has served or who is serving to protect our freedoms that so many have died for, suffered lifelong injuries, the horrible mental anxiety of the memories of losing their buddies. May God Bless the United States of America and ALL who serve. RPB

I think the slave line meant how the person was enslaved by the British

@@KCandFriendsUSA well he wasn't really a slave of the British, they had kept him on the British ship only until the bombardment of fort McHenry was over

@@validuranium1890 Regardless of which one of us both is right, this should make the third verse less bad, Star Spangled Banner is one of my favorite anthems and the ban of the song is going to be a tragedy, especially with a song called “The Socialism Rock”

I am a Singaporean. My government clamps down on responsible freedom of speech n Artistic expression, but I know what it means n how 2 b free. These two factors r vital 2 creativity, the spirit of inquiry n the generation of new ideas. It is also the basis of scientific discovery n invention. The government's suppression. has manifested itself---so far, no Singaporean has discovered or invented something significant 2 put the smart city on the map. We only use technology, we don't invent them.
