Hi Everyone!
As the start of my new RU-vid journey, I wanted to tell you guys about about my experience getting into the industry. There's so much information, but I wanted to start from the beginning. I wanted to cover a few obstacles I was faced with when I started from how much school cost, not having my family's support, & simply not even knowing if I'll do well or not. I hope this gives you guys some insight through my experience. Let me know what y'all think!

Loved the video! I just started barber school last week and I’m nervous but excited at the same time. I’ll be 42 in May so that’s the nervous part. Completely starting over in life after 40 wasn’t an easy decision but I wanted to do something for myself for a change Abe not what others want me to do. Look forward to more videos

@@Staygold31 Hi Sofie, been using the new Asus, love it. So much better than what I was using previously. Only wish it would tilt up a little more to allow a better view of the bottom screen as the timeline down there gets a little small. I've just been propping it up a bit higher with the charger at the moment, have to find a better solution. Apart from that, love it, thanks for the advice. 🤟🏻😎

Hi Sophie! I just wanted to let you know how much you inspire me everyday through this journey. I've always wanted to learn how to cut men hair since I was a little kid and my dad used to take me with him to the barbershop. Now I' 23 years old and I've finally started learning and honestly it feels great to be able to relate so much to another female barber (I'm from Uruguay ((South America)) and female barbers are not "a thing" here yet). Thank you for these videos and for being so open :)

i like this young lady,becaouse i can see my reflection when i listen to her,shes cool,shes flashy,tattoos on point and she has a style,its something definitly resonates with myself,....also iam now at this point in my life...,to make a choice,,....i dont have much saved money and iam risking but thats the point in life, its time of crisis also and many people are paranoid to make a move but i feel its time for me to move on and make that step,i dont expect sucess straightaway but i have a vision,and also like her iam kind of into self expresion,spirituality,tattooes and art,and i believe i could do this good and it could be something which i could do with a lot of enthusiasm and creativity,.....iam afraid of failing,but also i know that its not gonna be easy straightaway but there is also posibility of winning and making it big inaf :-D ......thats life i guess,you can give up or go for it,i like your videos a lot :-P

aww thats so exciting!! Good news, tomorrows video will be about my experiences building clientele from scratch. I totally agree with you, you have to just always have a positive outlook while allowing things to flow naturally. The skill sets will keep growing if you work on it everyday. The rest will make sense as you go, but definitely in the start, its just about learning everything you can and getting it better and better. Best of luck on your journey! :D

From walk in to appt, probably close to 3 years of doing more clipper cuts. I would say its different for everyone depending on the situation. In my shop particularly, i was the first person to start appts in there before it started to become regular for the whole shop

A great story. A lot like mine, I come from a academic family and they didn't wanted to see me as a barber and hairdresser. I have done fine and I am teaching young barbers and hairdressers. I always tell my story too to my students to let them know that you can do what ever you will with you own life and be proud about it. I will definitely recommend your's channel to them.

Thanks for sharing your story. I traveled and lived off the grid for the last ten years and came back home (Denver) to enroll in barber school at the age of 38. I'm in my 4th month at Aveda Institute, so the barbers also learn cosmetology... However, I don't feel passionate about Womens cuts, even though in ways they are easier and can pay more. I resonate with your story and am a big fan of your work. 🤙

wow, i love that! it's never too late! and i totally get that...its a feeling you get. i really tried the salon life and it just wasnt it and truthfully with the way its all now, barbers make plenty of money just CUTTING 🤩 It goes the same for some friends of mine who only cut womens hair. They always said money is color, but its not true anymore. If you find something that works and get really good at it and marketing it, thats it.

I can sooooo relate to this! I've always wanted to cut hair since before hs but after I graduated life kind of happened 😕for a long time I've always gone back and forth between all the things I want to do...😭 Long story short, I'm now 22 and I'm currently working atm but I'm looking into a barber school :) I've always been very fascinated with cut and color so I know I will enjoy it! What was your experience in school like? Were people supportive of you? Did you get treated differently as a woman? Did you ever feel intimidated to work in such a male dominated industry? And what advice would you give to someone starting barber school soon? 😅
@Staygold31
@Staygold31 3 года назад
The good news first - Everything you said, EVERYONE has to go through. I think its what makes the process fulfilling because the ones who really love it will go the distance through all the obstacles and if its not, people tend to give up. Bad news - there's gona be a lot of people who don't understand the path and won't be supportive. My advice: BECOME VERY GOOD AT IT.

Hey, Sofie. I'm at a hairdresser school right now. I'm almost 27 and been wanting to become a hairdresser since I was like 16. But just like your parents, mine pushed me to get a degree and I went to law school, after getting that, I just worked at random places and now I'm seeking MY dream. After watching this vid I realize I'm not the only one who's family isn't supportive about my passion and if I keep on going and working hard, I'm gonna make it. Great vid, wonderfull inspiration. Thank you 🔥🔥🔥🐈

YESSSS...unfortunately that's the situation for a many people are you are definitely not alone. Someday they will understand, but its not their fault, they were just told certain things or not exposed to the other side of it. The great thing about social media is expanding that awareness. I appreciate your feedback and watching this video!! I hope your journey leads you to happiness with what YOU want to do.

Thanks Sofie. I enjoy these series and the q&a sessions very much. They are clear with substance and easy to listen to🥳. it goes deep into the topics that not many professionals would like to or not many people would expand a seemingly causal but important topic as you did here. 👏Here are some of my questions, 1. How could introvert function well in a more extrovert salon environment? You have in one podcast say it was hard to start with, initially was finding hard to find the topics relate to the guys. How’s is your conversation with guys, do you have to take class to improve speech to be able to project your voice or research the topics that guys into or just let the client relationship build by itself? 2. Have you sometime doubt yourself if you have what it takes to be great or successful hairdresser after delve into the industry? From yourself or peers. Keep the good work going!
@Staygold31
@Staygold31 4 года назад
I appreciate this entire well thought out comment!! Great questions!! I think the only way this type of information helps is being completely transparent so im def glad to hear this type of depth is helping. If you are an introvert like me, the first thing I was able to do was to just keep trying different questions til something stuck. For example, i kinda go through my same list at first with new clients ex. Where are you from? Whats been your experiences like in previous shops? how did you find me? Is your family all located here? Where are you traveling from? What do you do for work? and among those questions usually it stems into other questions, but my goal is to find out what they like to talk about and go from there. It just took time and practice to find something that worked esp because you are dealing with people from all walks of life so thats always a fun side to research different conversation topics. You definitely gotta practice talking out loud even if to your clients or using the mirror...its awkward but watching yourself brings more awareness and gives you practice. And 2nd, i've dealt with a lot of self doubt, from family, and friends, but i just really kept pushing. As my skills grew, i started to develop an appreciation for what I do because it was so hard to learn and then the time just kept passing and i just kept allowing myself to evolve and just grow each day. It always stemmed from trying to create better haircuts for my clients and grew from there :D Hope this gives you some insights on those really great questions (: In both settings, you cant give into those fears and those fears are usually the things that will set you free and become your strong suits one day if you deal with it and work through them instead of going around. Mine was public speaking and here i am now traveling and talking in front of hundreds of people. Its crazy all it all works. :)

@@Staygold31 Thanks Sofie! for taking the time and energy to reply. I really appreciate it :) I would say I'm an introvert. I do similar question check list with my new clients as well haha, all of the questions you wrote above. at the beginning, it feels like the impulse to finish a bunch of side quests in a video game. very robotic. It's a learning curve. I also starting to see the viewpoint you said, the confidence grows once the skills grow, when you can make a client feel great. you feel great too. I also like the sharing of your challenges in life or career. It is a guide, context, or examples that help me to relate or draw from when I face difficulties or potential difficulties when walking in the industry. Again, thanks :)
