immediately sold my lcd for the OLED and man, its become one of my best emulation tools and has literally replaced my Switch. Once I got Yuzu settings down I didn't have any issues with the particular games I cared about, so we'll see how long that lasts but I'm more than satisfied. PS3 emulation has been S tier as well, I also just love the fact that I can play almost any of my regular steam games or roms modded and it just works. There's just so much value to the Deck off the bat that the other PC handhelds don't offer IMO and I cannot think of what valve will choose to innovate for the Steam Deck 2
I have a feeling it will be a long time before a new replacement unit will take it's place. Minor changes sure. But full new unit it's hard to beat the current OLED. The value is awesome!
@@shanelowe6695 I got my OLED at Christmas from my wife just for emulation and the bonus of being able to play some of my steam library, I can honestly say it goes beyond anything else I have every used and it turned out my whole steam library works and the emulation is amazing due to the fact that the OLED screen just makes the games look amazing and like a CRT screen with the colours. You will not be disappointed at all!
For Yuzu? That will depend on which games you are choosing to emulate. I had to use Power Tools from Decky loader to turn of SMT and limit the GPU to 1100mhz to get steady performance. Almost all titles will run like shit at first, but that's because shaders need to be built. After that it was smooth sailing@@zhivkogalchev4306
The thing with PS3 emulation is that it’s still a work in progress. They’ve been chipping away at compatibility for years now. It’s actually impressive that just a couple years ago it could only really play a fraction of the games it can play now.
This will be fixed with a steam deck 2. But yeah the ps3 cpu was actually faster then the ps4 & ahead of it's time. I have a ps3 with hen for all my ps3,ps2 and ps1 games even some psp. For 100$ or a little over that you can grab one. No point running ps3 and turning your deck into a microwave.
I hope that the Xenia and RPCS3 devs can somehow take advantage of the OLED higher memory clock speeds and improve X360 and PS3 emulation. That is my dream. To have a handheld powerfull enough to emulate the PS3 era games that have been completely ignored by Sony by not releasing a backwards compatibility program for the PS5.
Thank God I waited a bit longer, I almost got the LCD model. A week before I bought my Steam Deck, they announced the OLED model. I bought it right away, I've added all of my classic games
Emudeck is not a port of EmulationStation. It's just a wizard installing and managing all the different emulators, recognizing roms and also installing EmulationStation (optionally).
The other thing is as you get into the PS3 and newer chances are you can often just run the PC builds for anything cross platform anyways. I'm still rocking my 256gb one I got May 2nd 2022 and I can honestly say it's been my favorite handheld ever.
The Deck is amazing. Have ROMS from SNES all the way to PS2/Xbox 360 running on it. Then we have Moonlight Streaming, XBplay, and Chiaki for remote play stuff and all of this combined with the Steam ecosystem and CryoUtilities and Decky makes this a device for the ages. Absolutely pumped for their next big iteration.
I love emulation because I can make backups of my saves, install mods, run at higher resolutions & have save states. If my older console stops working I can still play using emulation.
The first game I played through on my Deck was Twilight princess, and in the hyrule field, it was really laggy and i thought it was just too much for the deck. NOPE, it was an issue with emulation and it wasnt until i was about 2/3rds done with the game that I found out its a weird emulation glitch, and that there was a built in mod to fix hyrule field and it was flawless after that. Greatest handheld of all time
Does TP HD on Cemu also have the issue? I'm playing the GCN original due to improved Henriko's textures, possibly better Epona controls (less jank maybe), and still in widescreen (16:9, not 16:10) using hacks. Not sure which is ultimately better though, as I haven't spent much time with the HD release version.
The emulation between LCD and OLED is no different other than the screen. The only time you'll see a difference is if you overclock and tweak the power settings but that mostly comes down to silicon lottery. I have both and the LCD is absolutely fine, if not close to perfect, but the OLED screen does complete the device. One thing i do recommend is having a decent sized ssd, its nice buying big mircosd cards but i have noticed issues e.g. stutter
Yea its a bit misleading for folks. Obviously anyone buying a steamdeck now should just get the OLED but people with the LCD have no reason to upgrade. Wait another 3 years for the Steamdeck 2. Steamdeck still outperforms all other handhelds because of its OS. Handheld processors need a few years of development to catch up to PS4/5
I think its worth mentioning that one and ps4 era as well as the actual one most games are on pc, and those games are very playable if not perfectly playable on steam deck
I bought a steam deck solely for emulation, I didnt even own steam games at the time, and its still the best decision ive ever made. So much fun to play on it where ever I want. And Yes i did get suckered into the winter sale and bought some banger indies and rogue-likes too!
@itsquiwi8780 oh I agree, I mainly wanted ps3 emulation though, and steam deck seemed the best option for that price, even tho it can't play all the ps3 games it plays the ones I really wanted, plus it's nice having the option to play higher spec steam games if I really wanted too
@@itsquiwi8780 Battery life on Steam Deck is only an issue when running software that taxes the APU. Most emulators (up to and including PS2 and Gamecube) won't even get the fan started so the battery lasts for many hours. PS3 emulation drains it, but the other devices you're talking about can't handle PS3. There are loads of great emulation handhelds for much cheaper than the Deck. None of them are better at emulation.
Had mine oled 1tb for a month now and man I’m so impressed I choose this over the rog ally because the community is more positive The etched screen that comes with it makes no difference at all to the quality I don’t know what people talk about when that’s mentioned I run all emulations and all my switch games to Man I so happy
How does Mario sunshine play with the steam deck shoulder Buttons? Are they non click as the gamecube ones were? This was very important so you could run and shoot water at the same time
Welp this sold me on it. Pc gaming to me has been stagnant for years. I needed something to get me excited with a new experience. And this seems to be what I've be waiting for.
Steam Deck is a beast of a machine, especially when you consider that they are using a much weaker chip compared to all of its competitors(Zen 2 Vs Zen 4) and can still keep up with them.
I love Deck OLED. But Switch games I prefer on Switch OLED. Especially now that I got one modchipped and can overclock and install mods like the Persona 5 Royal resolution mod, that maxes it out at 720p handheld. Deck is good for GameCube and Wii though. Those are the only systems I really care to emulate nowadays. Well, and 3DS on occasion. But a lot of 3DS games don't run well.
I mean, I’m sure they run perfectly, but why did you show 8 bit and 16 bit and then say “and on to the next generation ,PS2 and Game Cube”? What happened to the generation between them? N64 and PS1? Just curious. Great channel!!!
Switch is almost there, some games run better than others. If steam deck had just a touch more CPU power it would handle like a dream for bigger titles
When I run bios checker through emudeck it doesn’t list xbox or xbox 360 is missing but I cant get games to run. But when I do same process for gc I have no issues. Also how can I access graphic settings to fix black floors in pokemon colesseum. No help on reddit, please help😭
Would it be wise to buy one for emulation as of rn? Considering that competition is lowering prices on their machines and possibly steam deck 2 around the corner.
Can we EMULATE WII and Gamecube games on the Steam Deck ??? i want to buy a steam deck oled but I don't know where to buy it... where should I buy the console? Amazon? thanks
It’s just due to barely any developers spending time on it and a huge thing is the custom processor that the ps3 had, it’s much harder to emulate and takes a lot of processing power to do so. It was ahead of its time
It's pretty decent on a (Windows) gaming tablet or laptop at least (thinking RTX 4060 mobile or better and good CPU). It's at least a much better emulator than the 360 one, Xenia. Games like MotorStorm Pacific Rift, LBP, Infamous, etc. at 4K (and some 60 fps) go way beyond playing on a real PS3 at mostly blurry 720p'ish. And the relatively underpowered Steam Deck still runs maybe half the games exclusive to the console at full-speed or near. Those guys must be really motivated to put that much work into emulating such a complex architecture.
@@ottowokeninger9617 Xenia has so much work it needs done on it. I check the compatibility list every year to see if Lost Odyssey can finally be played on it properly and while there's always some amount of progress, it's extremely slow and nowhere near ready. One day, though, I won't have to turn on my 360 just to play the damn game, but I'm actually hoping it'll just get a port to modern systems instead. Probably won't.
Yo guys, help me out pls. So how this work? Can you download like xbox/switch games for free and install it on the deck like you would do on a miyoo mini plus emulator? If not i would rather just buy an xbox and a ayn odin 2 for switch and retro games.
If you don't mind me asking ; where did you get that SMB3 fortress decor for your wall? That is GENIUS! Also ; gotta love Emudeck. Finally got PS2 games running last night, but still need to sort out the controls Couldn't believe how well the GameCube Twilight Princess and NiGHTS on Wii ran right out of the box, didn't even have to mess about with BIOS files for those
lol, the fortress decor is from www.thefoamfactory.com/acousticfoam/pyramidfoam.html their website is from the 90ies but their fortress panels are super cheap. Also the installer and overlay kicks A$$.
@@DaveyG Thanks for this. I snore and have The Tism, so the addition of the sound proofing is welcome (along with looking damn cool! I totally want my room to be a SMB3 fortress now XD)
Has anyone had trouble with emulation recently? Emulation on my Deck LCD has declined terribly for me recently. Across the board, I've been getting frequent dips into mid-40fps. Does anyone know what's going on and how to fix this?
Is there a way to make the save data on the sd card too ? Also is there way to make the sd card for steamdeck before having a deck in hand ? as adding roms will take so long want to prepare my sd
Not to be rude, I'm just always surprised when I see this question. They're widely available on torrent sites and direct downloads which are returned by Google.
Here's my question: How does emulation performance on the OLED model compared to the LCD model? With the more efficient chip (6nm vs 7nm) and the faster RAM (6400/MT vs 5500/MT) what kind of emulation performance improvement can we expect? I would imagine it wouldn't be a radical improvement, but I could see games that were borderline, just barely unplayable, on the LCD model and becoming just barely playable on the OLED model. No one seems to be willing to answer this question...
Emulation is mostly bound to CPU, and in case you upscale and add other nice graphical improvements, the GPU. The performance difference in normal games lies at the range of 0 - 4 fps, so its not huge. What could have changed, is the ability to play with huge texture packs, but I doubt that would make a difference on the small screen. So very marginal improvements performance wise. But: The emulation software itself improves steadily, and I expect as an example to see something like FSR3 to be implemented.
Marginal improvements. I have both models, and have tested some 3DS, PS3 and Switch titles side-by-side. The faster RAM does make compilation, shader-caching and general loading *slightly* faster. For a game like LittleBigPlanet, where at native 720p I was getting 24-25 fps and it bumped up to more like 26-27 fps, so still a little slow but more playable. But it varies so much game to game (LBP 2 runs mostly 30 fps for example, and Demon's Souls also full-speed) and with emulator updates over time. Something like Tears of the Kingdom is still not fast enough by default, without tweaking various settings and hacks via desktop mode. Generally, if the game is unplayable due to low FPS on the LCD, it is not ideal on the OLED either. What I have done is dock the LCD model to a OLED TV for arcade / emulation using controllers, and use the OLED model for portable play. I think for those borderline-playable, a better investment is waiting until the next Deck model, or a Windows gaming tablet (3x expensive though- something like the Asus Z13 with 13900H + RTX 4060, and mostly to dock it to use with a TV, but it would run high-end emulation @ 4K), but the Steam Deck already covers so many systems. I wouldn't buy it for the (really minor) emulation improvements, but rather for battery life, OLED screen- the game changer (it was hard to play a game like Outer Wilds before), and maybe the improved design of the sticks.
I love my switch but man would I love to have a steam deck not just for my PC games but also to run emulators because hacking a switch is honestly difficult for me compared to the 3ds Whenever I see switch hacks they always eventually get outdated but also when it involves messing with the physical hardware to hack it yeah no I’m out 🥶
For some reason ps2 specifically Punisher drop FPS to low 30s at times. I turn off smt and still the same. I don’t know how to lock it to 60fps. 512 gb oiled model here.
most ps4/5 and xbox games are being poted to pc anyway... you said it can play ps3 games and switch games... welll not all of then, its not strong enough for that
this is amateur hour stuff. for the ps3, god of war 1 and 2 run flawlessly. what he's talking about, *and showing in the video*, is god of war 3 and i have no idea why he didn't bother to mention this small fact. god of war 3 does not run well, only 10-17 fps currently. gow 1 and 2 HD run perfectly on ps3 via emulation on steam deck
I dont know how but steam deck is very very annoying to navigate on there It's difficult to find my roms and emulators that I downloaded omg it's annoying too.
I never saw the appeal. You're still playing at the original refresh rate's polling rate. The games aren't more responsive, they just look smoother I guess?
@@hydzior It works in any game I have tested in in every emulator I have and none of them are dx12. It's a program called Lossless Scaling it's $7 on steam. It lets you play games like Mario 64 at 60 fps, and games like Sonic the Hedgehog at 120fps
does emulation put us at risk of getting banned?.....they are technically pirated right? I want to do this and follow the EMU guide but im worried about bricking the system or getting banned.
No its not illegal to emulate and you could not get banned cause you cant go online. But you have to have youre own prod and title keys...to setup yuzu in youre steam deck. And after that youre own games.btw if you search a bit on google you should be able to find the keys somewhere 😅😅...cant tell you where because thats illegal😅😅😅
Emulation is legal. Discussing piracy and asking for ROMs (game files) will get you banned at most social media platforms. There is no way, any of your devices will ever get bricked.
it's even legal if you own the games. You will not get any reprecussions other than Nintendo claiming your youtube videos, if you show off your emulations... Other than that, don't fear loving old games.
@@echtvergoldet You mean showing off gameplay footage, on RU-vid and other platforms. That is the same for original games, so no difference to emulation here.
The Steam Deck is not a closed system. It's essentially a custom OS based off Linux. In short, no, this isn't like running custom firmware on your hacked home console. You can install a hell of a lot more illegal shit and still never get banned, because your system is not monitored the way, for example, Nintendo would monitor their Switch. And as others have mentioned, emulation is not inherently illegal. It's just that most people don't want to go through the effort of extracting their ROMs and no one really gives a shit about old games since most aren't even sold anymore, so yeah, people just download the ROMs they want and no one cares.
I find running Xenia from non-Steam games using latest Proton-GE compatibility to be the best, but the emulator has a long way to go. It's less developed than the PS3 emulator. There is a patches folder in which you can find game-specific true / false toggles to make some games look better and run faster. The quality varies a lot though- many XBLA games run fine, some just black screen and others have various issues. Same goes for disc games. Dante's Inferno runs well, along with Alice Madness Returns (including the original Alice game DLC, which may be the best way to play the original Alice), Silent Hill Homecoming (but not Downpour, which has texture flashes). Original version GTA IV iso sadly runs decently but has sky texture issues. It still looks clearer than on Series X BC because I think that version runs 720p/60 on there still and looks blurry (plus you lose all the music that was removed with later patches, like Smashing Pumpkins, etc). You can also run Xenia through EmuDeck / EmulationStation method, but it seems to perform slower for some reason, and you have to make sure you have the game folders with default.xex or the long character string files for XBLA games, or the iso files for full disc games. The better alternatives are running Xenia in Windows where compatibility (and probably speed) is higher than using Proton, or of course a modded 360.
@@ottowokeninger9617I know some games run fine but a lot don’t run at all. I have Xenia Canary on my series x and the couple of games I tried don’t run at all after boot screen. This is on a series x too so
@@woozi36 It runs best on Windows. I guess you mean you are able to run the Xenia Canary exe on a Series X in dev mode or something. I know some games will do that using Proton compatibility (and maybe also true on Series X, since it's not native Windows), but then they run fine in Windows and get past the boot screen. You can also try switching between DX12 and Vulkan GPU emulation in the config file. It's still kind of a mess of an emulator at this point, the least developed of most of them so least compatible. Hopefully it gets better, more on the level of the PS3 emulator.
Depends on the emulator and your setup. Yuzu tracks your playtime per game. Steam will only track the title it's given, so if you just launch yuzu from steam, steam will just track playtime for yuzu as a whole, not individual games you load into yuzu. But if you use something like steam rom manager you can make individual entries for each emulated game, which steam would track on a per game basis.
The limited edition was available for long enough to get it. That said it has the matte screen so I just went with the regular model with the glossy screen.
I'm torn between this and the Legion Go. Emulation is definitely better on the Go but the steamdeck does look more user friendly. Not sure what to get ....
I am a "modified" Oled switch owner (and it turns out to be an amazing machine for emulation and regarding battery performance). Apart from Gamecube/ps2/ps3/xbox360 games, it can run pretty much every old emulator (in addition to the massive Switch games library so that's about over 40 000 games with an incredible display quality if you have the oled version). but if you asked me I would go for the Lenovo Go if I had no Switch. However on a price point view you should also consider a thin laptop (for better battery performance and practicability such as usb ports, memory size, etc) with an AMD APU (some even have the same one as the Legion Go)
The Steam Deck is only more user friendly with Steam Deck verified games, and maybe with Emudeck make things easier. Outside of that, windows is easier to use since most other things you might do on this device is built around Windows. That said, Emudeck is in beta on Windows. And I tried about 1-2 months ago on my PC and the experience was not yet as good as using it on the Steam Deck. However, I prefer to use other tools for emulation than Emudeck when given an option.
this review is just one more to a pile of others that do the same, wish people would at least give data like how the input lag is for the various emulators, not just go and repeat what's already been said
You missed out on allot consoels , Sega Dreamcast ,OG Xbox , PSP , Vita, wiiu 🤔 also for 360/ps3/XB1/ps4 you dont need emulator since majority od thos games are on pc/steam ans for super cheap andnmodenr games games as well that are not on Swirch
@@metascrawlmusic because I’ve seen a lot of people saying their 360 version of a game runs better than the ps3 version. Example: Skate 3 But I’m just as curious.
Not in terms of emulation it won't. PS3 and Switch emulation will be better, but still not perfect. Anything below that doesn't need any more power than the Steam Deck has.
If there's a fault you can return it within 12 months. The 14 day policy is for returning the device unwanted, it's not the warranty period. A stuck button should be easy enough to fix yourself though.
