Something else I have also always thought as stupid is that Gemini's were never combined with pendulums. You could print some strong effects on them since you have to place 2 in scale to Special summon them, then use your normal summon(s) on your Gemini's on the field.

I'm surprised it took me so long to find this. But its kinda crazy that someone made a video essay with many of the same points I often make when it comes to expressing my opinion that the pendulum mechanic shouldn't be shackled to links, or that summoning 5 (now theoretically 6) monsters from the ED doesnt really matter because most decks can make a dozen bodies easily, and so forth. One of the big things I often focused on was that it was a blatant double standard that most decks now have a level of recursion that pendulums could only dream of even in MR3, and that pendulum card design often... Just doesn't work anymore. Smile universe being a personal favorite just because it seems like it could be a fantastic butt saver. But other cards like wavering eyes kinda being... Useless. Unless I search EXACTLY astrograph, I don't wanna go -3 because I can only summon back ONE MONSTER. Also the "Pepe lite" playstyle as MBT coined it, of pop search, pop search, pop search, stack your ED for a fat pendulum summon just... Doesnt exist anymore, like you said with Igknights. BUT THANK YOU FOR SAYING WHAT I'VE BEEN SAYING. That Konami DESIGNED these cards to play this way. They designed them with the inherit recursion to come back from the FU ED because of their scales, but NEVER gave them much in the way of summoning themselves. Then, Konami punished the mechanic for playing the way they designed them. I've been saying that for AGES. THANK YOU. Anyway, Odd-eyes is my favorite archetype, free the pendulum.

It's ironic that a mechanic that receives hate for being able to *theoretically* summon 5 monsters at once, when every modern deck consistently summons way more than that. At least when it happened with Pendulums, you didn't have to wait for your opponent to combo for 10 minutes into an already predictable board state.
@admontblanc

Konami right now just views pendulumns are just the rough draft for Rush duels. Now that rush duels exist, they have no reason to fix pends.
@gabrielarocena3074
@gabrielarocena3074 Месяц назад
I think the main reason why Konami has been hesitant for pushing Pendulum card design further is that they basically eradicated the original Pendulum design philosophy of being able to bring back face up Pendulum monsters in the extra deck with MR3 which for some reason isn't still reverted when MR4 happened. Soo unlike Fusion, Synchro and Xyz; where they continued the card design they left off during the end of Arc-V with the Link restrictions not being anymore the issue (like Zoodiacs), Pendulum have to be basically designed from scratch as a lot of them is basically non functional.. Konami doesn't really have an idea how to build off Pendulums since they wiped the old mechanics out and tied them with Links which can function perfectly fine with out any more advancements. Soo they basically just designed these new Pendulum support cards like they were like Link support, but instead of special summoning themselves to Link climb ad nauseum, it is just more consistency to offset that Pendulums are still handicapped.
@admontblanc
@admontblanc Месяц назад
This is completely fake, Konami has actually showed they know how to build interesting, unique and powerful pendulum archetypes, although not always all of that together and this video provided tons of examples. It's more about a huge segment of the playerbase having this stupid hatred for pendulum that holds back more pendulum stuff. And the TCG side is actually the main culprit, the way they murdered Endymion along with Electrumite (which actually killed every other pendulum deck then as Endymion ironically stole a few tops even with Servant at 1) back when the deck wasn't even performing, it's also the TCG that in huge events like YCS or WCQ just brands decks that were clearly Magician decks as "pendulum" because, god forbid, some other engine was there, and I'm 100% that TCG blockheads trying to be funny were behind that kind of thing, after all it was Jerome himself who gave us the explanation that Electrumite had to go because it made all pendulum decks too similar, as if they ever cared about that regarding other decks and disregarding the fact that every pendulum deck was playing Mite because there was literally nothing better they could play instead. One could blame the OCG side of things since only recently was a more concerted effort to provide links that work for specific pendulum decks, but at least the OCG didn't do the stupid thing of banning Electrumite, and pendulum decks do occasionally get their tops at OCG events without the world ending.
@gabrielarocena3074
@gabrielarocena3074 Месяц назад
@admontblanc Yeah they are developing Pendulumns by leveraging their properties being part continous spell cards, but not anymore leaning towards the initial design of Pendulums thanks to Master Rule 3+ ruining the key aspects of them being able to be brought back from the extra deck by forcing them to link summon first just to get more extra monster zones. Also the hate on Pendulums is a complete overreaction of the community because of the Plushfire + Damage Juggle proping up PePe into a tier 0.5 strategy. See the initial design of pendulum monsters during the Arc-V era as follows; you commit cards to build the scales, you Pendulum summon card with the appropriate levels based on the scales, then use those Pendulum monsters as cost for bigger monsters that are mainly from the extra deck, then maintain the scales to reuse the Pendulum Monsters that where used. Forcing them now in needing to get a Link summon before a Pendulum summon thanks to MR3+ basically brakes the flow of the initial design, as now they aren't leveraging all the initial advantages that Pendulum monsters have of going to the extra deck face up and being able to be Pend Summoned with the correct scales. This is why Penulum decs are still using Electrumite as a crux, as they have little to no other alternatives as Beyond the Pendulum has way too much restrictions to be reliable for Pendulum plays. You are now basically stuck creating new Pendulum cards that only leverage only certain aspects of being a pendulum monster; which is either leveraging them beng part spell and monster, foring them to act like a Link deck first in order to open up the EDZ, or just staright up being a Pendulum monsters for the flavor instead of function.

>a deck that plays on two different axis They technically tried to do that with Valmonica with each scale gaining counters from either taking effect damage or gaining lifepoints. Then if you get enough LP counters on the Fairy scale, you can link summon the offensive angel to pop your enemy's field and attack multiple times, and if you get enough damage counters, you can link summon the defensive Demon who protects your cards from destruction and banishes your Spells/Traps to apply/reapply their effects. This is kinda just me shilling them because they're the first Pendulum deck I want to play, but honestly, the design choice for them is actually interesting I'll argue. Now, is it a good deck? I think Vaalmonica definitely has potential to be something, I see some people babble on about it's a Bagooska pass deck while ignoring the fact that, one it simply exploits Baggoska's interaction (or lack thereof) with links, and two that it has a good link option for both defense and offense depending on your needs. Also, it can make Gallant Granite to search Nibiru. 46:05 that's an actual thing in the ARC-V manga, there is an evolution of pendulum summon that can only be performed when the two cards in the pendulum zones have matching scales. In the actual game this is not as cool as it is just a pendulum effect monsters, that can special summon itself from hand or extra deck face up (doesn't actually require them to have matching scales) and prevents you from doing an actual pendulum summon.

On the subject of Pends not being as complex as people make them seem (except the stupid extra deck/graveyard stipulation), I have always wondered why nobody also complains about Xyz materials literally not existing in a named location. Sure, they're designated as "materials", but they're not considered on the field despite that being the location of the monster they're attached to. If people can understand that just fine, I think understanding scales and continuous spells (nobody complains about crystal beasts) isn't a tall ask.

One crime you didnt mention against pendulum is how the vaylantz field spells *require* you to place the other field spell from the deck, and only the deck, and are otherwise unplayable. That means you have to play more than 1 of each field spell else you risk opening both and being locked out of the game, but doing so risks opening more than 1 in your hand, and now you have unplayable bricks in your hand. This is worse when one of the decks only spells and play makers on release (the one that searches senet switch), requires you to add a field spell from deck. That meant before they made the other searcher for the deck, shinonome's effect was basically "add a vaylantz field spell to clog up your hand from your deck to your hand" if you drew 1 of them. God forbid you search one from deck later in the duel while having the other last one in your hand. Oops now these cards are unplayable. You're also underselling musecia's effect for solfachord. It's not niche. It's *embarassingly* bad and the card has no reason to exist after beyond was printed. It's first effect is a search *after* pendulum summoning, and the only solfas that can summon itself from the hand are coolia (with its secret effect) and dreamia. Dreamia is a hopt and you probably already used her to summon musecia in the first place. So surely the intended way is to search coolia and tribute 2 pendulumed solfas to summon her right? Guess what, the only way to search coolia with musecia is to pend cutia, you know, the level 1 monster.... in the deck that has no 0 scale.... i am absolutely baffled as to why they made this effect this way. So it's only use is for follow up i guess? But solfachord isnt really a deck that needs follow up as it already has multiple ways to have them. And besides the only monster that would be good for follow up is dreamia and cutia... and cutia can only be searched if you pend coolia. So dreamia is the only real good option. Musecia's second effect is completely and utterly redundant. It swaps pendulums between your hand and extra deck. Except solfa already has a way to recycle cards from the extra deck, as a +1, in their field spell. Sure it can recycle any pendulum rather than just solfachords, but... what pendulum would you want in your hand that isnt just better off pendulum summoning in the first place? Freaking harmonizing magician? (For Turn 3+ btw) This is not to mention this card was released while electrumite is still legal in the ocg. Oh yeah and its summoning condition is the same as electrumite's, rather than beyond's more lenient one, so you can use trias hierarchia as material for it like you can for btp. The ONLY use for this card, is literally in a format where both btp and electrumite are banned. As just something you can go into, and which might swap an unplayable scale from your hand with the cutia that you just used for it so you can place it in your scale. And i guess you could play it as a turn 3+ option before btp was released in master duel because electrumite is limited, i guess? But i think i can count the amount of times i summoned her in master duel before btp was released. After btp, i can count the amount of times i summoned her on an amputated hand instead. Well no, i may have summoned once in some event where the aforementioned apology links to pendulum were banned but not musecia. It's a really big shame because musecia's art is one of the best in the archetype.

I think she'd be "fine" if she were a link 1, because it only uses 1 card to convert for some versatility but even then, I don't think it's game changing versatility. In the end, it would probably be the fact she'd then be a link 1 that she's any good then.

Sometimes the situation does come up, and i wish i had a linkuriboh lol. I pray for the day we either get a link 1 that lets us play through handtraps or musecia as a main deck level 9 scale 0, preferably one of those cards making fancia playable. Monsters your opponent controls lose attack/def of your highest scale x100. I made these a while ago as an experiment to see what was possible with a simple pendulum archtype. As mechanics they have synchro monsters summoned with scales as levels, pendulum monsters summoning themselves from the extra deck, and a pendulum with trigger a effect while already in the face-up extra deck. Ut Musica works as another starter/extender as a bridge between all Solfachords. It also make Gran Musica much better/necessary for unclogging your field. Gran Cutia is meant to help play through interruption, set scales, and provide a constant support card for the negate of Gran Coolia. I tried extra pendulum summons (of Solfachord from the extra deck exclusively) to make Gran Musica even better, but it was too much. It doesn't take much to make pendulums good in a modern sense. All Konami really needs is effects on pendulum monsters that can be used while in the face-up extra deck. The main problem pendulums face nowadays is heavy commitment to the field. If they didn't have that issue as a base they could play like all other decks, and from there deviate into the cool mechanic it was always meant to be.

Ive always felt that Pendulums suffer because of their versatility. They double as spells, so they're weak to backrow hate and spell negation, they focus on monster combos so they're weak to nib, you need 2 scales to do anything so they're weak to hand traps, your scales can be cleared by the opponent so you often get no follow up and on top of all that, it's an extra deck mechanic, so it gets hit by bullshit like d barrier for no good reason.

I really like your alternate way of Vortex effect. I could really see this concept in a world where you have either a change in Master rule to free pendulums again (and maybe dumbing down Links) or a world where not every deck could pump out 8k damage and call it a day on turn 2. Like for example you have a fusion link deck that plays like follows: Main deck pendulums with an archetypal pendulum effect to bounce themselves to the hand if they get destroyed and then some minor effect (like two subsets of cards that interact with each other [searching the other half of themselves] on a hard once per turn). Then there could be an archetypal fusion that fuses by destroying monsters even in the Pend zone (like a shattered fusion that is a quick play). Then their monster effect is then when their counter part gets destroyed they interact with the opponent. While then the fusions could have extension effects as monsters and recursions when they get scaled. The main decks are low scale the fusions are high scale. Then finally their links enable otks. This would also then really go good together with Unchained so you need to be a little bit careful how exactly to phrase it (also I just realized I may have created Memento 2.0 at this point). But it is a fun little concept. Game plan would to be to scale them then to fuse rescale them with the fusion then pend summon to preap their effects. Then finally go into link plays to push for game.

Pendulum is, by far, my favorite mechanic. You hit the nail on the coffin with the Rank 4 point; it’s something I mention every time Pendulum hate arises. The mechanic is a longevity engine; Pending many monsters itself does not win you the game. When they were released, for you to quantify your summons into actual threats, you would need to need to use them as Tribute Fodder, or play an unsynergistic Tuner…… or overlay the 2 monsters, accessing pretty much every effect that’s ever been conceived with the most ubiquitous Level in 4. Without Xyz, Pendulum was meant to be a mechanic designed to help out the severely outdated Tribute Summoning. But, with 15 slots of Rank 4, it became too much. I do think though, generally, Pending a surplus of monsters is ridiculous. It’s way too much if the opponent can’t deal with it and I’m very much against having to main deck Spell/Trap removal in bo1 or playground settings. Thus, if I made the mechanic back in the day, I would make two fundamental changes: 1. You can only Pendulum Summon from the Extra Deck at a deficit of monsters, up to the difference. If you have 0 monsters and the opponent has 2, you can Pendulum 2 from the ED. Hand is unrestricted. This makes the mechanic feel like a Pendulum; when youre knocked down, you can get back up. 2. Every monster, universally, if destroyed in the Main Monster Zone, can be scaled. It wouldve helped make the mechanic feel less gatekeepy. To play Pends, you had to play an entire deck of them. This change lets Konami print utility stuff better. Imagine, say, a Ryko or a Monarch that scaled after they were dealt with. The mechanic would feel more natural and bricking on scales wouldnt feel as bad; just use them as monsters, get your value, and set yourself up eventually. These two together, I feel, wouldve sparred us from the guillotine of the subsequent Master Rules. Theyd be too slow now but I’d like to imagine that, if they didnt need to be taken out back in the Link era, we wouldve had natural progression to the mechanic in ways that every other mechanics do now. Lastly, the state of the Extra Deck is awful. I hate Beyond. I hate Electrumite. I hate how every Pend deck ends on Appo and friends. A big point of contention with the mechanic is how unrestricted the extra deck is. I fell in love with Pendulum because Yuya only had so many Extra Deck options to work with for the longest time: 2 situational Fusions and 1 singular Rank 4, and a magnum opus hail mary Rank 7. When Yuya tapped into the ED, it felt significant. Dennis also only having 1 Xyz Monster was cool too. I dont know what could be done to emulate this, but I feel like there shouldve been a master rule along the way that tribal locked your Extra Deck. You pick a monster to be your cover card and can only use monsters, in the Extra Deck only, of that attribute, type, or archetype. This would make Pendulum decks, or any deck really, feel unique again. I hate getting excited about say, the new Supreme King stuff in Duel Links, and doing my research to learn it and finding out the Dimension Dragons arent at all at the forefront and instead, youre looping Electrumite with Promethean and doing Raging Phoenix with Zealantis like every other deck has been doing for half a year. That’s not Yugioh to me.

it's wild to see somebody praising pendulum's for the engaging facets of their potenial verastility in being able to supply materials for otherwise clunkier summon types (Abyss Actors and Qli are big favorites of mine on the Pend archetype front). and so much yes on the topic of a pendulum ritual deck, though while i know this isn't how the rules work id love something like a pendulum ritual monster can be placed into scale as normal, but while in scale still abide all normal rules for their summoning, ideally whatever archetype that does this explicitly makes its ritual spell allow you to ritual summon a monster from pendulum scale/extra deck face up using pendulum monsters from face-up on extra deck or on field as materials. at some point in time i had a whole draft for custom cards themed around the non ritual monsters being Light Spellcaster monsters with the rituals as Dark Fiends, the idea being the spellcasters are the exorcist mages that are keeping the powerful fiends sealed in magical mirrors, but the influence of the fiends causes their jailers to assist in their jail break. with then for fun points a LINK/Pendulum card that requires a Pendulum Ritual Monster as its materials, with a whole maddening idea of link/pend monsters in a pend zone creating linked zones to pend summon from whilst leaving the extra monster slot open, gives a whole extra dimension of play with link arrows that would normally point to parts of your opponents field you don't normally have access to, if we're gonna keep the shackles of links as a mechanic on pendulums as a mechanic make pends able to do something special with it to recapture some of their pre-MR3 mechanics in a way normal use of links jsut can't. since quite frankly links have a home in pendulum's "Go Beyond the Pendulum" and into other summon types just as much as Fusion, Syncro, Ritual, or hell id even Argue *Tribute* as a mechanic belongs in the list Pends want to support. (can we please stop with XYZ pendulum stuff, XYZ is already unreasonable enough as it is.)

I think the predaplant pendulums are better than the SS/Meldious in terms of design space. While good for the deck it didn't become abused in a bunch of unrelated archetypes. I feel like there are lots of ways to design pendulums while avoiding the major flaws. Like what about something akin to dogmatika but placed the ED pendulums in scale, or something like VS that can tag out as a QE, copying spell/traps while in the scale. I feel like moving away from "summon a bunch of dudes for material" is something they're slowly moving away from and it would open up more interesting design space.

And if it'd end up being too good a setup piece for pendulun decks.

@@RenegadeRedoer that's not a bad restriction but pendulum kinda needs all the resources it can get so putting something in the extra deck from hand im asuming might be too costly for most pend decks to handle, another suggestion for the restriction could be to reveal another pendulum with a different name and level from your hand, that way you keep the cards in your hand and you're basically forced to play more pendulums to actually use the handtrap. but idk designing cards is really hard, its easy to run into the issue of making cards too good unintentionally

Been playing master duel for 3 months now. The few times i went against the pendulum decks i had enough negates that they couldn’t set/search the scales or got drained of resources and pendulum summoned 1 single monster. When i started playing i herd the mechanic was broken, etc. from what i saw seem kinda underwhelming on its current state.

Spot on about the Performapals, Magicians, and Odd-Eyes being seperate decks. I never liked how all of them were sewn by the hip, with Performapals especially being the weakest link of the bunch. There's no reason why they shouldn't be independent, they literally only exist to be part of the Pendulum soup pile despite said soup pile not even needing them.

That's their lore though, and tbh I think that's completely fine, and what was remarked about that in this video is what those archetypes already do IRL. You can absolutely try to combine all 3, or just keep each confined to their own stuff. But I don't like this purist view that evewn pendulum players themselves hold their pendulum decks to when the same issues in any other deck or mechanic don't get. Nobody forces you to mash up all 3 together, you can both do it or not do it without feeling any loss, but it's obvious one of the 3 will be better than the other 2 always, no matter which one it is. I also think it's stupid to care about the pendulum pile decks over what people who already hate pendulums think or say, they don't matter at all, and if they think every pendulum deck is the same so be it.

I loved Pendulums! The Pendulum Structure Deck was the 2nd one i ever bought, and i LOVED the Mechanic. Also, Arc V is the best yugioh anime. Hands down

Well made video. My only hate for pendulum is that the best decks tend to be spellcasters. Otherwise. I miss my old deck. Pendulum made normal monster beatdown a strategy again. Even against stronger decks. And I miss Tyrant Throes. Best floodgate ever.

stop hating pendulum people, its not fair to give love to everything else when they have their own charms
