Microsoft should focus a little more on this issue. Luckily people started noticing this and thanks to that there are now several improvements to insider builds, like the redesigned notepad or updated volume flyout, although it would have been better not to rush the launch and ship the os when it is really ready. Since Windows 8 (a decade) they want to modernize the UI but the only thing they have achieved is more and more inconsistency in each new system and duplicate apps. It's disappointing to see basic parts of the system that don't respect the dark mode or not being updated since Vista :(

I think code reuse is ultimately fine if it leads to a better experience and allows devs to fix and update core systems more heavily, but from my experience Microsoft isn't very interested in doing that either. They very much want to repaint over everything and act like it's brand new while only tweaking a few things in the background. I feel like when it comes to UI stuff in particular is just that Microsoft has never really been a forward facing company and doesn't really plan for the future. So many default apps are written in such a way that they handle their own look and feel independently, rather than using a core theme engine. This is also why Windows doesn't really support themes in any meaningful way. Unlike linux apps that either utilize gtk, kvantum, or libadwaita and can be themed at a system level. But Microsoft doesn't seem interested in going back and refactoring their code base, (probably because it would possibly break backwards compatibility or just be too expensive to actually do at this point), while continually applying more and more coats of paint with every release. This is a problem that is only going to get more and more difficult as it's ignored.

I don't even see Windows 11 as an unfinished product, I see it as a patch to Windows 10. Windows 7 was honestly the last OS in which Microsoft actually cared about changing stuff instead lazily add an UI overlay, like look at Windows 11's taskbar: incomplete and LITERALLY an Overlay for the hidden Windows 10 one! Windows 8 was pretty knowingly a shit update, but at least stuff fitted way better since it was pretty much similar to Windows 7, and the Metro stuff was more like a different world from Win32 in which everything actually fitted together
@hanro50
@hanro50 2 года назад
Prior to 8, I believe Microsoft used the approach where they'd add onto or change existing windows features. Meaning that they'd either completely rework something (windows update) or they'll update (control panel). After Windows 8 however. They essentially started to become lazy. Instead of updating features of Windows so things stay consistent. They started essentially layering new features ontop of Windows. A few of those Windows 7 remnants can be found as far back as Windows NT, but since MS use to update the grathics system wide back in the day. It was far less noticeable.

In my opinion Windows 7 was like a nice and polished house with all the tools you need organized very well. Newer versions are like if someone went to that house, took half of the tools and threw them in a giant pile in the corner of the basement, because they want the house to look "clean". And then they lock the door to those tools and buy shitty replacements for *some* of those tools. And then they rip out and burn every curtain, table cloth or anything that looks nice to make it more "minimalistic". Thanks for reading my rant
@awesomeferret
@awesomeferret Год назад
What most people are glossing over is that they never threw the old tools away when they could have. Think about how much worse it would be if they had, and any other company would have thrown away the tools. Might have to make a video about that, it's frustrating how one sided some of these conversations can get. The irony is that if they had done as many want them to do, Windows would have been truly ruined. I know that there have been times where you've been thankful to have the old control panel (especially if you ever used Windows 8), come on now. The irony is that you're giving them way too much credit. We need the backcompat because Microsoft takes an entire decade to get new UX correct. ☺

All OS vendors stack new versions on top of others, but they have the good taste to hire some UI designers to re-design the UI of the old stuff and make it modern. That way, the code underneath might be 20 years old and you'd never know. Microsoft just don't have the good taste to do that.

Everybody who took even a brief look at Windows source code (which is publicly available since 2004) knows that all Windows versions share a common source code, with new features just added to that already existing code. It isn't news, at all. Windows sources are full of directives like #ifdef WINNT, that separate parts those are specifically for NT-based systems (NT, 2000, XP and all later versions) and those are specifically for 9x (95/98/ME). The main difference between 9x and NT is char type: ANSI for 9x, UNICODE for NT. But even without source code, it's pretty obvious that all Win versions have a lot in common, like seriously. Same file and catalog structure, same dialog window all over GUI, same tiny little things of behaviour, same registry with a small set of keys unique for 9x against NT, and even smaller set for versions inside two major branches.

I don't know why Windows 11 comes with the old calculator pre-installed but it should get updated to the new version automatically shortly after you install W11. - 2:31 That flyout has been redesigned for the upcoming 22H2 update. It should have been redesigned way earlier but at least they have worked on it. Can't say the same for the Wi-Fi flyout though - 5:30 Task Manager has an updated version coming too with dark theme support, Mica elements, the accent color being used instead of orange and layout changes. - 6:02 Same goes for the volume and brightness flyouts; their design and even position have been changed. - 6:35 They updated the design of this dialog but scrapped the redesign for the time being, apparently due to the feedback saying the updated dialog was slow or buggy - 8:06 This has been changed too. The new animation is kinda similar to the old one but also quite different - 12:31 MS Paint has been updated and the updated version is available to everyone already. It's functionally the same program but its design is quite different and Microsoft has promised to update it further to add stuff like dark theme support Windows 11 was released in a pretty dumb state but at least Microsoft is actually working on fixing some inconsistencies this time around instead of completely ignoring most of them like they did back in the Windows 10 days

The age of everything is connected has given companies a way to simply shove out a broken product and patch it all up later. They themselves have said that Windows has become just a tool to enforce subscriptions, data collection and ads on their users, like mandatory Microsoft account, telemetry that you can't disable, ads on folders, Candy Crush, Edge being default even if you don't want it, XBOX Game Pass, OneDrive, Microsoft Office... the list goes on. Why would they waste their resources on making a good operating system, if they'll use it only to get people to pay for their stuff? Anyway, I upgraded to Linux when Windows 11 first came out, and now my computer is better than ever. I strongly recommend it to everyone.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX. Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux!

@snil4

Why is it the general consumer's problem? @kamikadze2185
@kamikadze2185 2 года назад
@@snil4 Because that would not be financially viable. There's no company that is your friend, and there's no company, (especially a company that is traded on a stock market) that cares about consumers. Companies care about money. But let's say that Microsoft have 2 separate versions of full-fledged Windows, one for consumers, and one for businesses. There are two problems with that. First one is: one Windows makes a lot more money than the other one, because businesses often pay more, or even pay, for keeping older software alive. The second one is: why would any company keep two very similar products that are not sharing a lot of codebase? And how could those two versions of Windows share a lot of codebase if you're going to throw away half that is there for backwards compatibility, and the other half you're going to replace with shiny new things? You could argue “then why there's Windows 10 and Windows 11 at the same time?” but the situation there is slightly different. First of all, Windows 10 is phased out, second of all, Windows 10 and 11 are sharing a lot of the code, so both teams aren't wasting resources just to make the same thing twice.

in fact, there are two different onscreen keyboard applets! the one that is accessible from the lock screen is the classic that hasn’t changed too much since its beginning, then there’s also the touch keyboard, which is more updated, it includes emoji, special symbols etc

22H2 is coming soon, which will make Windows 11 feature complete. This is _Windows as a service_ . A product that is always in testing, improved with updates over time.

They said the exact same thing when they released Windows 10, they promised it would be "Windows as a service" and that it would be improved with updates over time and that it would be the last version of Windows... ... ... oh wait. Fool me once, shame on you, but believe me I'm not going to believe anything that you say from now on.
