incredible informations! Thanks a lot! Think we have now a population of wolves in Germany of 3000 individuals, in a country which is not so much bigger than Minnesota, but for sure here is much more dense populated. I know my villages nature very well, where we have at least 3 packs around very close and where I find every day new tracks, a leg of a deer or clearly excrements. Even that woods arounds with beaver dams looking quite the same, and I also just had some glimps of them crossing a path, or running into my direction with the wind when I came out of the bushes and once I scared them and they disappeared like ghosts in a split second. Our foresters are surprised that there is hardly less game and there is less damage caused by deer in the forests. There are also fewer problems with beavers. Nevertheless, this study would be very good for this large number of dull "wolf fanatics" and "wolf haters" here
This is an excellent documentary. I particularly was delighted and frankly, shocked, to see someone in Peggy’s position not take an emotional bias towards wolf management. She’s scientific and objective. Exactly how it should be. Most in her position aren’t able to separate their emotions from the science. Tom Gable, unequivocally cannot. He’s interspersed his emotions and bias, repeatedly. I’m a huge admirer and lifelong self researcher of wolves. I’ve been hunting in wolf country, in North Central MN, for 15 years. I’ve seen ELEVEN wolves in daylight and have observed many behaviors; hunting, chasing, pack interactions, pups running and playing with each other, while the parents laid and rested. Most while sitting in my bow stand hunting deer. I hold wolves in great reverence, but I will certainly harvest one when the season resumes. There won’t be any celebrations if I’m able to find success. Frankly it will be pretty somber, I may shed a tear. I hold them in that high regard.
so then why do it? what ecological value would it hold? Part of the problem is that there is no national plan. Wolves and other predators prefer to migrate hundreds of kilometers to find mates. They can't really do that in the continental US
@@Amidat hundreds of kilometers in a circle maybe which is very much possible considering how small a kilometer is. Wolves are raised in a pack and then either get booted out and join a new one or start their own. Again, you must make grill cheeses at night. On the spectrum I’m guessing.
@@jamesbender1967 Tom plays his cards in the position he holds. He totally preys on wolf hugger mentality because it’s those people who donate to his project. Not to mention other pro wolf donors he would lose if he came out as truly unbiased. Which I do believe he is to an extent. At the end of the day if there are less wolves in Ely, the project might get shut down and he would lose his dream job and have to relocate bc there’s no real industry in Ely to speak of unless you want a pedestrian job.
@@Amidat trapping in the modern era is extremely humane. Researchers use the exact same techniques as trappers do. Tom mentioned they modify theirs with rubber jaws, but anyone with any sort of trapping knowledge knows rubber jaws are no more comfortable or less comfortable than a proper sized offset jaw steel foothold. He only says that to put wolf huggers minds at ease. That’s how ill informed you people are.
I'm a former Minesota I'm really interested and glad that you are doing really good work what really makes me upset liveing in Oklahoma is that they killing of Coyote in Oklahoma they nail them to fence post as a Trophy it's so cold and uncomfortable if I'm wrong let me know but I most likely won't agree with the reasons for killing Coyotes
That's so disturbing, I'm sorry ): Even if a coyote must be removed from the area, it is simply deranged to treat them like trophies with carcasses displayed.
After a gradual decline in population over several years during the severe winter of 2022-2023 the Deer population in north east Minnesota collapsed. On my land in south east Carlton Co. last year 2023 I saw 3 Deer total. So far 2024 I have yet to see a Deer, the combination of a large unregulated Wolf population and a record breaking winter is responsible. It's been several years since I've seen any Rabbits or Snowshoe hare too. Bering in mind that MN DNR studies have shown that Moose calves have a 60% mortality in NE MN due to predation. I ask how is it we have Black Bear population management but Timber Wolves are completely protected. They have increased their range to areas in central MN and have had a stabile population for years now. It's a political decision by the MN DNR to continue with completely protecting Wolves. Why can't there be management similar to Black Bears? The MN DNR has become a politicly guided organization. Do a 20 year study of big game populations in NE MN the numbers don't lie.
Crow wing county MN. I've been hunting white tail deer sense i was 11 and I'm almost 29. The wolf population is keeps killing cattle, sheep and even farmers riding horses. Beavers are still around and the porcupines are everywhere. We need the wolves but damn.. where did the deer go? Am I gonna get more meat grouse hunting?
The damn turkeys point out where the deer are before I have a chance.. we also have a very large black bear that looks like about a utility 4wheeler.. his head is bigger than a basket ball
Well I appreciate you admitting that MN is at its carrying capacity or above. Also that leads to large percent of pups starving to death because there’s to many wolves . Another reason to have management of the wolve population through trapper/hunter harvest
What I don’t get from radicals such as yourself, is you would rather see the wolves or wildlife in general have severe ups n downs and die from disease and starvation rather than be humanely harvested and managed to have sustainable, consistent population
Dude, I've watched my dog eat blueberries, setup ambushes, figure out different forms of food and harvesting methods. Does this really need to be studied? Lol, another good use of tax dollars 🙄 Also, it's obvious that the litter success rates are so poor. The deer and moose have been decimated in northern MN.
Do you honestly think a flat card board cut out out with no smell and no life energy coming off it will throw a beaver off?! You ever see a game hunting decoy for any animals?!
