The Stationary Ark was a documentary television miniseries hosted by zoologist Gerald Durrell on location at his Jersey Zoological Park in the United Kingdom. It was based on his 1976 book of the same name. The series was produced by Canadian company Nielsen-Ferns and aired from September to December 1975 on CBC Television and TVOntario. Ark on the Move, a follow-up TV series, was also hosted by Gerald Durrell.

This is Georg... I did the Synth Sample version. People you would not believe the long road this tune has had to get here. A brilliant old friend of mine (Tim Donnelly) played this live on C64 using my software, I transcribed his performance from a cassette recording with no reference to the original composition by John Mills-Cockell. Tim never mentioned where he got it from...

Back in 1976, my school in Melbourne had us watch the whole series of The Stationary Ark. I remember sitting cross-legged in front of our black&white HMV, feeling a pure joy as the theme tune opened the programme - of being transported in my childhood imagination to the island of Jersey and beyond. Effortlessly I'd created my own magical island-world and to this day I can sail back with this music. Lovely to share a tender, distant memory with others. An old VHS tape of the show in an attic?

Now I will be able to hear it again every night while sleeping just as I did 40 years ago... Sad note is when I got married and went away from home, my mom in anger threw away my unbelievably large Commodore collection which included several C64's, 128, 16, Plus4, SX64 and several Amiga models lots of peripherals and accesories, and thousands of floppies. This is definitely not the original track, but not a bad New Agey synth version. About two years ago I e-mailed the composer of the original music, John Mills-Cockell, who lives in Vancouver, and he said that he no longer had any copies of the original recordings of the music in his possession ... Still, someone (at the CBC?) must have a video tape of this somewhere, no? The later computer versions of the tune I didn't know about before. A lost masterpiece ...

I would suggest checking and even bookmarking the archives page (tvo.org/archive) periodically for new content, as we don’t know at this time when it will be posted!". I quote it because people might find it useful. Patterson Ferns replied with a very informative letter covering wide range of topics, including the music.
