Originally the two lead dancers were supposed to be me and Gelsey Kirkland, and Balanchine was reviving this older ballet of his especially for us. Unfortunately we both decided to leave the company before the premiere. His COPPELIA too was started on Gelsey and myself for that same season. She left to be Baryshnikov's partner at American Ballet Theater, and I left to found my own Los Angeles Ballet. On reflection I should have, and could have, waited a few more years before going to LA...but the impetuousness of youth got me.

Lovely to see this again after many years. I always adored McBride in this role. She looked as though you could pick her up by the waist with two fingers. The ending was more touching in the theater. Seeing it up close made the Soldier look unchanged at the end. In the theater you knew his little paper heart was broken.

My son is 4 years old and his first ballet solo is based on this ballet. He was very inspired after watching you both

Thank you! I've seen this ballet with other dancers. What an odd little piece, marvelously done by McBride & Misha. Truly a special delight.

Amazing how the dancers can move like puppets or mechanical toys. It requires true talent to do this.

The scenery and the costumes remind me of "The Nutcracker."

What a terrific little ballet. Never even knew about it. Sorry you missed the chance to dance it -- LA didn't deserve you.

At least the Tin Soldier doesn't die and it didn't end with a Sati
