First published in 1886, when Yeats was 24.
The drawing of Yeats was by Augustus John
The picture is the waterfall at GlenCar
The print is by Steven Brown
I was looking for images of Yeats Country - Lough Gill in County Sligo. Be sure to visit this page and download the video which gives a good view of The Lake Isle of Innisfree and other local attractions.

This always strikes me in it's beauty: "We seek for slumbering trout And whispering in their ears Give them unquiet dreams; Leaning softly out From ferns that drop their tears Over the young streams." Magnificent x

I've come to understand this poem, I think , pretty well in recent years. When one's heart is touched by Faery, called by the haunting songs of places lit with another sun, one can never return to this murky world without that enduring stab of loss and longing.

I had a completely different experience hearing this poem. I feel that they are deceiving the child and the island is an illusion, or somewhere he is unlikely to survive. Look at the way the poem ends, the fairy does not speak to the child but rather to its cohorts and says "human child" like its a sacrifice. I guess that's the beauty of poetry, we all have our own responses to it.

@hrryzdlr Maybe. But there are two distinct voices and the faery one needs an etherial, distant quality that is hard to create in a small office. I was influenced by practicality . It seemed a good idea at the time.

Excellent, and it is a pleasure to listen to a well-devised voice recite an old favorite if mine. Outstanding.

I love this poem, which I first encountered through Loreena McKennitt's musical version (she set the poem as song lyrics to an exceedingly lovely melody.) I very much like this reading of the poem as well.

I agree with Misha Morrow Noble about the echo (it could have been turned down a notch), but. apart from Shakespeare, who appeals so immediately to the ear? This is enchantment itself.

Both Eliot and Yeats wrote such beautiful poetry....timeless, provocative, and definitely enchanting.

excellent reading, wonderful voice. the only thing i don't like is the echo effect. i think your voice is rhytmic enough and tonal enough not to have to resort to cheap tricks.
