@@ryanstewart2289 - I actually play mostly janky mechanic-themed decks (like Nekusar), but most of my friends are aggro, so I'm the one doing the math.
Explaining this rule to my friends and explaining why I'm allowed to bring back my entire graveyard of Infect/Stompy monstrosities was the second best thing that happened that game, but the real best part was getting my Nethroi counterspelled after I showed them and spending the rest of the evening eating shit from the entire table.
Yeah I learned how to use the "×" symbol on my calculator and once won with Helix Pinnacle turn 2, but only beacuse Helix Pinnacle is an upkeep trigger. Everyone just got to sit and stare at the shroud enchantment with nearly 200 counters on it and a fuck ton of mana dorks and be sad because a mono green player learned math.
I mean, who says you can't be the life gain deck? Scourge say 20 minus the highest life total among players, not among opponents, and white, black, and green has solid life based strategies.
@@16chaos61 this. I play my nethroi as life gain/drain. Main goal is self mill then pull as many soul warden type creatures from my grave as possible along with cards like Dina, soul steeper, marauding blight-priest, etc. usually if nethroi resolves, I win
I am in the middle of making an all creature deck with nethroi as the commander. I learned of this a few days ago and man am I excited to dropped this combo on my play group.
Nice! I've been running a creaures only* nethroi deck in historic brawl for a while. Finally got around to making it in paper. I run a couple adventures and even got a PW (grist). I might put in one of the saga praetors just to get the card type as well
@@joejaboy I’m referring to an old thing where death’s shadow would go above 13 power if you were at negative life, so you could do things like fling it for obscene damage
Roblox kid with parents credit card is a great line, funny man. I can't believe you did two videos on Apex of Death in 24 hours but no Kelsien the Plague video in two months. Great stuff
ikoria is a special set. it introduced powerful triomes and mutations. on the scale of bringing it back. it stands at a "9". a 9 is very "likely" for ikoria to return. things that happen in ikoria, only happen in ikoria.. ikoria is its "own plane" ; apart from the lore of magic.
I really appreciate that you came back to this too as additional information since you said you didnt realize it was a thing at the time of the original video. Most creators would’ve just shrugged it off and moved on after replying to the comments.
@@ohthatpieI explained it on the previous video, but basically Nethroi checks for total power. Reanimating with Scourge means that to get to total power 10, you need total power 30. Because 30 power minus 20 totals 10.
First you had my interest. Now you have my attention. I hadn't thought of that for this deck. Very much thinking of trying it out now. Muh backlog, though.
I bought a mystery commander deck today, a big risk, I pulled the 5 colors matters Jhoda deck, AND DUDE when I saw Nethroil in the deck list. I was so happy. Cuz I instantly thought of that skyclave demon and I was just. In necromancer heaven
Never trust an Abzan graveyard player. They may not be an Izzet math wiz kid, but the moment they learn how a specific equation works they *will* make sure _everyone_ finds out they know about it.
I was working on a variant using the arcbound creatures and similar monsters that are 0/0 in grave and get +1/+1 counters upon entering the field but now.... im literally shredding the document. I have no idea how to excel this but dear god this is not ok and that's exactly why Im here for it XD
Zulaport Cutthroat, Blood Artist, Corpse Knight, Ayara, Grey Merchant, Falkenrath Noble, Cruel Celebrant, Elas il-Kor, and Teysa Karlov are all creatures in those colours. Add a sac outlet like Viscera Seer, and do with that information what you will xD
Yep. And these are the same colors that run, oh, I don't know, Cathar's Crusade, Juniper Order Ranger, Hardened Scales, and Branching Evolution? Bring back as many hydras as you want friend, they have 0 power and toughness! But when they enter they'll get a counter from Cathar for each of them entering, so let's be conservative and say...five? Plus each will get another from Juniper, so 6. But oh. Wait. Hold on, we forgot our friends the enchants. You see, each of those is two-no, sorry, still forgot to factor in the green nonsense, I meant four. So...five hydras brought back for free with an instant 24 counters on each of them. And that's before we even throw MORE counter nonsense like new Ozolith, old Ozolith, Vorinclex, Kami of Whispered Shadows, etc. into the mix. Tldr; hydras are busted with Nethroi and Green continues to commit just as many crimes as Blue
@@ajcunningham5892 Actually no, most hydras require X being putting into their costs to enter with counters. Cathar's Crusade, as with most effects that put counters on creatures when they enter, are triggered effects. Nearly all of these types of effects would mean your hydras would die before the triggers resolve thanks to state based effects.
@@tonysmith9905 Good point. I forgot that when I did something similar in the past in a Poloukranos Reborn deck, I had anthems on the field to avoid that. Good catch!
@@ajcunningham5892 There are a few ways to get around this though. Bloodspore Thrinax is one that I know. Just remember the pump effect needs to be on the battlefield before what ever mass rez happens. If they enter together at the same time the Thrinax or what ever pump you use won't trigger on the hydras.
The dawning realization after you watch this video, scratch your head and then reread the text to realize the horror of this lovecraftian soul calculus is long but worthwhile.
This is more like when the biggest man in the room proving he is a licensed accountant and he isnt afraid to use your skulls as his ledger and counting devices.
As if it wasn't bad enough, Scourge checks all players, not just opponents, so as you drain out your opponents or pillow fort and increase your life total, you get larger and larger reanimation piles.
@@kertkoljada1891 Nethroi allows you to bring creatures from your grave with a combined total Power of 10 or less. Scourge has a power of -20 if any player has 40 life (like in Commander). So, if you bring back Scourge, the total combined Power is -20, meaning you have 30 more Power worth of creatures you can bring back from the graveyard.
@@lo4tr OH MY GOD. Thank you so much, the negative power of scourge never clicked as bringing down the total. Holy shit. I've been trying to figure out what the point of this was for like half an hour. Make the deck have a minor life gain theme (or a swap selection of other stuff if going against a lifegain deck) and you can bring out everything.... Eerie (creatures-only) Ultimatum as a mutation trigger. This is insane.
Hi, Nethoi player here! I didn't know about this card or interaction so thanks for bringing it to my attention! I'm sure no-one nowhere will regret this exchange of information!
The definition of insanity and doing something again like asking for Progenitus and expecting difference ! But Progenitus has protection from everything so I won’t give up ! Day 14 baby !
Did this with a shadow born apostle deck with this as my commander and it was funny af, just dump a bunch of big demons I put in my grave onto the battlefield
It's because of commanders like THIS that I built an Urza, Chief Artificer deck that runs 19 graveyard hate artifacts and ways to get artifacts back from the grave. You're going to be crying about your empty grave while my swole Gingerbrute and army of menacing constructs is beating you down.
Just discovered your channel and insta subbed. Hilarious content. I'm hoping you can do tsabo tavoc, maybe a little underwhelming compared to some commanders but I still like it
I once built a rebirth deck and played a 6 player game where I cast double Dark Ritual first turn, then buried alive, grabbed Jin-Gitaxias, Sheoldred, and Platinum Angel, then exhumed Sheoldred, brought in Jin, made everyone discard their hands, and summoned Platinum Angel using Persist on turn two. Platinum Angel protected me from losing the game, but not from losing those friendship.
I NEED you to make a vid about Galazeth Prismari. I’m a rat bastard that evades taxes and keeps treasures on the board forever and somehow pays for spells with food 💀
Yeah, I can wholeheartedly agree with how broken mutate can be. I had 2 different mutate decks, one I called Draconic Pathogen, the second I called Oozing Slivers. I bought every mutate creature that released in Magic, then methodically split them up and combined them with dragons and slivers. No group anywhere around will allow me to play either of those decks in any circumstance. Mutate makes things way too broken for absolutely no reason😅
I miss when I used to play nethroi and get confused looks from people when I turn 2 a skyclave apparition to die immediately and then the realization when I finally mutate my commander lol
My Nethroi deck’s got Scourge, and it’s got like 15 creatures with 0 power (no toughness=power though). So in a “no GY hate” pod, a Nethroi mutated is like 17 cards out of the bin. Even without Scourge among them. And I do love the deck for it.
The Rock to my knowledge only ever used the chokeslam once and that was against The Undertaker as it is fairly common to steal moves from whoever you are wrestling at the time. Usually the move he used that he called The Rock Bottom was an Uranage. The difference being with a chokeslam you remain standing with an Uranage you fall with your opponent driving them down with your own body weight (in theory)
I've wanted to run a mutate deck for awhile because the concept is just interesting to me even though it's a little weird and would have to explain it to all my friends multiple times.
Theres several really good cards that are 0/0 that come out massive with +1/+1 counters or cards like this. Nethroi is probably the crazies of the mutate commander options
I have been using Nethroi for a cycling deck with herald of the forgotten that brings all your cycling cards back to the battlefield, still using Scourge of the Skyclaves since I got it in a booster though
