Every f**ker had shades of Morrissey back then. I remember at the end of '87 my mate Louise at the college disco pulling me aside and saying 'We don't dance like that anymore...we dance like this now'......never looked back...actually, never looked back until all I ever do is look back ha ha!! The new future is the past.

Every time I watch this I wish I could see more of Reni and how he does it with only 2 arms and 2 legs! It sounds like there must be an octupus on drums. His drumming's so powerful and fast, you wonder how it's humanly possible! He's so hyped up, he's like Superman. At the end about 29.20 he powerfully knocks his kit over. I can quite believe he was left hyperventilating after some of these gigs. (Can't remember where I read that.) Must've been hard to come down when you've given your all in a performance like that. An amazing man. I love watching him drum no matter what his age. I can't believe he thought he was 'too old to drum' for the reunion. He soon proved that wrong. Never even sounded out of breath whilst singing & drumming away. My drumming hero!

I was at this gig - though you can’t see it, there was a pretty serious mosh pit - I was just turned 17 and me and my pal - we bashed about - it was brilliant- they were the most vital new band in Manchester- this was a joint gig with The Playne Jayne (spelling) where the Roses went to London and supported PJ in return - we’d seen their first Warehouse gig a few months earlier- after the second Warehouse gig - So Young/Tell Me 12” single came out - then after what seemed like an age Sally Cinnamon came out - by this point they were getting more mellow, trying to ditch the aggro at gigs - Ian famously writing in the bogs if the International One venue, “We don’t need no more fighting” Ian. The energy at these early gigs was spectacular.

Not hard to see why they weren’t taken that seriously in the early days, what a transformation. Shows the power of hard work and self belief.
@valley_robot
@valley_robot Год назад
They were taken seriously mate even at this stage ,they recorded an album of these tracks produced by Martin hannett ,it was shelved because the band were going through massive line up changes and they thought the original debut album didn't reflect the new direction they were going ,they went through a lot of shit and still made one of the greatest albums of all time
@valley_robot
@valley_robot Год назад
They were still trying to be the clash at this point and Ian was trying to emulate morrissey even though he claims that they didn't like the smiths ,he looks a lot like him and he is copying a lot of mozzers moves in this gig

What an interesting but frustrating watch. How the hell the cameraperson only filmed a few seconds of Reni when the rest of the band are largely uninteresting anyway is one of the greatest failures and mysteries in music of all time. I, like many watching this, aren't really that interested in watching anyone else and likely wouldn't have complained if the camera had been only on him the whole time.

They did have the foundations of one good song here - Adored - but little else in terms of decent songs . But they had a great drummer and a very competent guitarist. Ian's singing was as flat as the Norfolk broads. It's a strange journey they went on ; goth-post punk , jangly indiepop and finally Led Zep style blues . They nailed the jangly indiepop for a couple of years , not so much the other two.
