Called "the picture that changed the face of AIDS," photographer Therese Frare’s image of David Kirby on his deathbed surrounded by his family has received international recognition and acclaim. The 1990 photo was vital in humanizing AIDS patients to the broader public in the height of the AIDS crisis.
But there’s a deeper story here with another important individual who was actually Frare’s subject for a long term series on AIDS. Their name was Peta, and in this video, we learn their story and connection to David Kirby, and later Kirby’s parents Bill & Kay.

This made me reflect on losing people in my family and how horrible situations ironically can bring out the pureness and beauty in humans.

Zach, I could listen to you discuss photography you're passionate about for HOURS. I think it'd be an amazing video idea, you narrowing down your top 10-20 all time favorite photos.. based on influence, emotions they evoke, etc. No matter how well known a photographer/ photo is, I ALWAYS learn something new from you 🖤

Its thought David took his last breath at the moment this photo was taken. That man was there when he was born and was there to hold him when he died. Rest in peace David

The way in which Americans did and didn’t care for each other in the early aids crisis is basically our whole story. People like Peta. I love that he was a difficult patient.

Right? Me too. Peta would’ve known so much about the entire process that they had probably been planning how they wanted things to go when it was time.
