I have waited for YEARS for a video/article to highlight how impressive this bassline is. It's my favourite part of the song. I taught myself to play this line years ago. I had fun importing it into Logic and doubling it with a 'moog-ish' bass and it sounded almost perfect. You illustrated it so well, breaking down each note, which is fantastic for other people to appreciate and comprehend it. Well done!
Great video. One of the most memorable bass lines of the 80s. A great song, becoming a million selling single reaching number 1 in virtually country around the globe.
I'm a shred guitarist and that baseline gets me going just crescendos and gets better. That song didn't need guitar solo but I'd be happy with doubling the base outro
Me too, man. I also play the electric guitar and yes this bass line rocks. I'm into heavy metal, but this tune (and others like) since always gets me up hig
This video scared the crap out of me when I was a kid. My sister had MTV on all day and when the video came on I'd hide somewhere till it was over like a scared cat.
That's my girl ! I loved the 80's and I loved Whitney . But Madonna was a rebel and something I was growing up .I related to that and so I was digging loving Madonna for her no holds barred I don't give a fuck attitude . The Virgin tour I saw 4 times .The Blond Ambition tour I saw twice in the states and twice in London .
This is a very shallow and misleading way to tell the story. The video wasn’t about Madonna kissing a black Saint. It was about many other things tho including stigmata. The music video for "Like a Prayer", directed by Mary Lambert, portrays Madonna witnessing a young white woman being killed by a group of white men. While a black man is arrested for the murder! Still happening today! Also Patrick Leonard worked with Madonna before Like a Prayer on her True Blue album, which is still one of the best selling albums ever by a female artist.
exactly. the video is an anthem to racism. and the critics demonizing her for kissing a black man certainly demonstrate the racism she's rallying against.
First of all it was a Black JESUS and Madonna conveniently didn't bother to correct anyone in her interviews about it being a saint and Not Jesus at that time . Secondly the main concept of the video as Madonna described it is about Religious and Sexual Ecstasy ❤
Hi! i'm just an apprentice so I cant figure out how he played this on a 4 string bass? did he drop D the 4th string? or just tuned all the bass in DGCF? Your comments will surely enlight me!
I thought this was a song about religion…. Until I really thought about the words… it’s very cleverly written but clearly about fellatio. All these years Lots of dudes have been jamming this song! Madonna: 1 unsuspecting straight guys: 0
With all the greatness of this song, the first time I heard it, the implicit message I figured from the lyrics is that this song is about oral sex from a woman to a man. The title itself says it all: “Like a prayer”, but it’s not. Part of the lyrics: “down on my knees I wanna take you there”. Keep analyzing the rest of this song and analyze the video and you might see what I see.
The reason Madonna was able to keep $5M was because she had met all her contractual obligations with Pepsi and in addition made Pepsi aware of the nature of her video. They did not have a problem with any of it until the sh-- hit the fan. Pepsi folded and sued Madonna for the money paid to her. Needless to say Pepsi lost the suit and Madonna remained as the Victor.
Come on guys, two videos in a row that may or may not feature Spector bass because the main bass part is played by a synth :) There are so many examples of a Spector being used JUST BY ITSELF, not doubled or maybe replaced by a synth. I am not mad......just really disappointed ;)

Do you really think it worked if it was just for money? Like a prayer is inspired by gospel and church's chants. Madonna was not that silly to make a record just with the sound of an organ.
